557992bk Saxophone US 12/9/06 4:37 pm Page 8 Myron Michailidis GREEK CLASSICS Myron Michailidis was born in Heraklion, Crete, where he received his first piano lessons at a very early age. He continued with Dimitris Toufexis in Athens; he subsequently studied conducting at the Berlin Music Academy under Hans-Martin Rabenstein, graduating in 1996 with top marks in conducting. At the same time, IMPRESSIONS he attended conducting seminars with Miltiadis Karidis at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy in Dresden and with Sir Simon Rattle. He also holds a Law degree from Athens University. He has FOR conducted such important orchestras as the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Opera of Eastern Saxonia, Magdeburg Philharmonic, New Brandenburg Philharmonic, SAXOPHONE Thüringen Symphony Orchestra, Niederschlesien Orchestra (Poland and Czech Republic), as well as all the major Greek AND ORCHESTRA orchestras. Since 2001, he has collaborated regularly with the Greek National Opera, conducting productions of Tosca, Il trovatore, L’Italiana in Algeri, Les contes d’Hoffmann, L’elisir d’ amore and Photograph: © Koukis Fedora. He has collaborated with famous soloists such as Aldo Theodorakis Ciccolini, Paul Badura-Skoda, Shlomo Mintz, Martino Tirimo, Teresa Berganza and Cheryl Studer. He has given particular emphasis to promoting Greek culture, especially Greek Skalkottas classical music, and young Greek musicians abroad. From 1999 to 2004 he was Permanent Conductor and Director of Musical Studies at the Opera of Eastern Saxonia, Germany. Since July 2004, he has been Artistic Director of the Antoniou Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra. He has recorded, in collaboration with the University of Crete, a CD of Mikis Theodorakis’s Axion Esti. -

Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Andria Michael 18 December 2015 3 Abstract This thesis is a study of performances of Sophocles’ Antigone on the modern Greek stage, their political and social resonances, their cultural contexts and their role in the formation and presentation of modern Greek national identity. It is the result of research concerning the revival of ancient Greek drama, in accordance with modern Greek theatre history as well as with the broader history of the modern Greek nation. As a play political in its essence, Antigone has been widely used as a political statement in the Greek revivals from the second half of the nineteenth century onwards. To attempt an examination and analysis of such performances covering this long period of time means to simultaneously examine the key events of the country: the liberation from Ottoman Rule, the early process of formation of the new state, the hotly disputed conflict of the Language Question, the modernist Generation of the 1930s, the Greek Civil War, the Dictatorship of 1967-1974, as well as many other significant events and movements of modern Greek history. The approach of the work is qualitative rather than quantitative. The aim is to choose the specific moments when theatre and politics cross paths, to examine the connections between artistic choices and political incentives, and to highlight the moments which eventually reveal that Antigone has been repeatedly used as a platform for political or politically charged issues, conflicts and agendas. -

I also undertake that any quotation or paraphrase from the published or unpublished work of another individual has been acknowledged in the present thesis London 2013 Ioannis Tsagkarakis i ABSTRACT This thesis spotlights eleven formative moments or ‘events’ in the history of twentieth-century art music in Greece. They date from 1908 to 1979 and are ordered by two master narratives, the ‘Great Idea’ and the ‘European Idea’, concepts with multifarious implications for the making of contemporary Greece. The nature of the musical works presented during these events, the particular kind of reception they received, the debates they generated, and the role their composers hoped they would play in the construction of a contemporary Greek musical identity are some of the indicative issues that will be discussed, and always in relation to the prevailing political and social context. More specifically, I will try to show by way of these events how politics and culture were inextricably tied together. In some cases the events directly mirrored the political divisions and social tensions of their time, while in others they formed an easy (‘innocent’) prey to political agendas – indigenous and foreign – that were at some remove from matters aesthetic. -

In fluent greek his first words to me, were about his unfinished project of a directory of libraries in Greece which have resources for music research for Volume Five of the International Directory of Music Research Libraries. When he asked me to join and help him finish the project I readily agreed. Soon after I found myself travelling around Greece, with or without Neil, visiting monasteries, Schools and Libraries, trying to find music material of special value, for the Directory. When Neil passed away in 1994, 154 entries were incuded in the Directory. Now that the work is completed, the list numbers more than 240 entries. Neil Ratliff studied Library Science, piano and harpsichord, voice and musicology. -
