Foreword The 5th EPEA International Conference on Education in Prisons, "Bending Back the Bars" was held in Blagdon, England, 1-4 October 1995. There werethree main conference themes that. year; "Promoting the growth of the individual in prison through a broad-based curriculum", "Encouraging Ownership by Staff and Prisoners" and "Building Bridges with the Community". At the time of the 5th EPEA conference, contacts had been taken with the National Prison Administration of Hungary. The NPA in Budapest generously agreed in hosting the EPEA conference in 1997 in cooperation with the EPEA. A working group started the conference planning already in Blagdon. One of the objectives of these conferences is to encourage research and examination of appropriate methods and practical initiatives related to different aspects of prison education, with a view of emphasizing the right to education and reducing recidivismnot as a goal in itselfmore as a valuable future consequence. A further wish has been toinvite countries of central and eastern Europe to take part in the conference. Therefore it was a special pleasure for us to welcome the representatives of these countries. The 6th EPEA Conference had a total of about 130 participants from 23 countries in Europe, Australia, USA and Israel. At this sixth EPEA Conference "Protective Bars", one of our aims was to focus on prison systems and humanisation and look into what part education can takein that development. The title of the conference was meant, in a way, to provoke people and make us thinkabout what different roles the "Wall" or "Bars" can have. Most of us agree in the role of protecting society from criminals by putting them behind bars. This perspective could be right aslong as you do not mean it for life and if the "insideperspective" is to prepare for life outside. Our conference title would also like you to think of a different perspective which,in some countries would mean that the walls or bars actually could protect and facilitatedevelopment and progression inside, as long as the bars exist. This, however, could be ahazardous perspec- tive and need a very carefully thought through policy. With or withoutwalls we believe in what education

Anita Judith Ogurlu 16 February 2016 2 Abstract This thesis examines the life and work of a little-known interwar period German writer Lilo Linke. Documenting individual and social evolution across three continents, her self-reflexive and autobiographical narratives are like conversations with readers in the hope of facilitating progressive change. With little tertiary education, as a self-fashioned practitioner prior to the emergence of cultural studies, Linke’s everyday experiences constitute ‘experiential learning’ (John Dewey). Rejecting her Nazi-leaning family, through ‘fortunate encounter[s]’ (Goethe) she became critical of Weimar and cultivated hope by imagining and working to become a better person, what Ernst Bloch called Vor-Schein. Linke’s ‘instinct of workmanship’, ‘parental bent’ and ‘idle curiosity’ was grounded in her inherent ‘spirit of insubordination’, terms borrowed from Thorstein Veblen.

This is true both of its societies, often envisioned as ‘lost tribes in the forest,’ and the ‘raw green hell’ of its environment.”1 In many ways, we all know the common mythical images associated with the Amazon: the region that time left behind; the place where stone-age people continue to live; the green heart and hell of South America where western civilizing missions go to die. This mythic vision is strong and reeks of colonialist obsessions with the “backward” racial Other. The bachelor of science degree in Digital Humanities and Social Sciences (DHSS) is an innovative, interdisciplinary major that combines information science and technologies with liberal arts training to provide students with the integrative literacies increasingly necessary for careers in cultural institutions, government, educational institutions, and technology firms. These transferable and sought-after capabilities ensure students leave RIT prepared for leadership as digital citizens. The DHSS program is a collaborative degree program. Students receive a strong foundation in critical thinking, cultural awareness, and communication in the College of Liberal Arts. This program offers a traditional liberal education, which is given new impact through engagement with digital technology. Coursework combines humanities and social science with computational and design training from the Golisano College for Computing and Information Science (GCCIS) and the College for Imaging Arts and Sciences (CIAS) in areas including human computer interaction, database management, geographic information technologies, and interactivity in new media. Students achieve both broad knowledge in digital humanities and social sciences and a specialization in an area of interest through their studies. Students benefit from experiential learning opportunities in one semester of cooperative education or an ternship, team project-based lab courses, and a capstone project.
