Issue 1 Workshop List 2021 Welcome to our 2021 workshop list. The classes and work- shops in this list have been graded for experience level as fol- lows: No previous quilting experience Familiar with basic techniques and terminology Have attended several quilting classes/workshops Summer Sale Thurs 19th - Sat 21st August 9:30am - 4pm Double points days Come in on these dates and everything you purchase will earn you double points on your privilege card. Super easy and fun to make. Sat 30th Jan 10am - 4pm £35 Xmas wreath with Sarah Soward So let’s talk about Christmas in January. We are going to make this easy but very effective wreath quilt. Maybe a wreath is not just for Christmas? Friday 26th Feb 10am - 4pm £30 Jelly roll bag with Sarah Soward This bag is a total must have now we are trying to not use carrier bags. From your jelly roll you will be able to make 3 bags, the bags are big enough to take a board, cutter, ruler if you would like to use them for workshops. Thurs 11th Mar 10am - 4pm £35 Curved flower cushion/wall hanging with Sarah Soward This simple way of curved piecing will get you hooked and also make your friends think you are very clever with curves. Sat 13th and Sun 14th Mar 10am - 4pm £60 Tilda fun with Sarah Soward Squares, triangles, strips and a little planning is what’s required to make this optical illusion quilt. Use fat 1/4s from your stash or pick a range that all tone together. Not suitable for beginners, rotary cutting and machine piecing. © Pauline’s Patchwork Ltd 3 Issue 1 Sat 20th Mar 10am - 4pm £35 Sewing mat with Terry Summerfield Add some colour to your sewing room or sewing space by using a fa- vourite charm pack to make this sewing machine mat. Mat can be sized to fit most machines, has useful storage pockets and is non slip. We may also get to sew some coordinating accessories if time allows. Tues 23rd Mar 10am - 4pm £35 Beginners cushion with Sarah Soward Ever wanted to give patchwork ago, well don’t be afraid come and join us to make a simple but very affective patchwork cushion. Tues 30th Mar 9.30-12.30 or 1-4 £20 Corded coasters with Sarah Soward A little something for you to make that will give your table a unique look, also very easy to make for gifts. Using some cord and fabric let’s twist away under the sewing machine until you have the size you wish. Fri 9th Apr 10am - 4pm £40 Notebook cover with Sarah Soward We will be using decorative stitches on your machine as well as some hand stitching to make a cover for a note book. You will be amazed at the results and will want to give them as gifts, if you can bear to part with them. Thurs 22nd Apr 10am - 4pm £35 Sashiko cushion with Sarah Soward Enjoy hand sewing while making this stunning form of quilting. You will be able to use stencils that will allow you to design your own cush- ion. Saturday 24th Apr 10am - 4pm £40 Get to know your sewing machine with Sarah Soward Scared of your machine? not sure how to use some of the feet? Then this is for you! I will cover machine appliqué and quilting along with the pre-programmed stitches on your machine Mon 24th May 10am - 4pm £35 Sashiko cushion with Sarah Soward Enjoy hand sewing while making this stun- ning form of quilting. You will be able to use stencils that will allow you to design your own cushion. Friday 28th May 10am - 4pm £75 Orange peel with Gillian Travis Price includes £15 for all size plastic templates This course is for quilters who like the appearance of orange peel quilts but find making it in the traditional way too difficult. This is an alternative method. © Pauline’s Patchwork Ltd 5 Issue 1 Saturday 29th May 10am - 4pm £60 Improv with Gillian Travis On this course I will teach a few quick and easy innovative methods using rotary cutters. Choosing the colours and using fabulous mod- ern looking fabrics available is the key to success. It is unlikely that students will get to the quilting stage as just making the top will proba- bly take all day. The finished pieces can be used to make quilts, wall hangings or many other items. Sun 30th May 10am - 4pm £68 Indian glam and bling with Gillian Travis Price includes £8 for kit Using beautiful brightly coloured sari silk strips, ribbons, embroidered braids and some sparkly sequins and we are almost guaranteed a good day. Use the above (all provided in a kit) to weave, and layer, adding ma- chine stitching to make a richly decorated fabric that could be made into bags or book covers. The weaving is easy to do, (made easier with the use of steam a seam), and makes a very rich new fabric which is further enhanced with sequins, braids and machine stitch. Saturday 5th June 10am - 4pm £40 Free motion machine day with Sarah Soward So you have the basics and you want to improve on your machine skills. We will be working very hard on our free motion skills, as well as machine appliqué. It will be like doodling with your sewing machine. Monday 28th June 11am - 3pm £17 Binding fun day with Sarah Soward This is going to be a fun day for you to try out different types of binding, so that your masterpiece will have that special finish. 6 © Pauline’s Patchwork Ltd Issue 1 Fri 2nd and Sat 3rd July 10am - 4pm £60 Strips galore with Sarah Soward There will be 3 different quilts to choose from. The first one is made with 1 jelly roll and then a background fabric. The other two use 2 jelly rolls (one white on white and one patterned) so the choice is yours. All 3 quilts are made in the same way so if you are unsure which one to choose, you can wait until the day to make your deci- sion. You can make the blocks in different ways to get a different quilt. Requires ma- chine piecing and rotary cutting. Thurs 8th - Sun 11th July 10am - 4pm £65 Bargello goes large with Sarah Soward This Bargello is for people that have already done Bargello with us before. It’s 4 days of cutting and sewing and when finished, your Bargello will measure a whopping 98” square. And boy will it look fab- ulous. Definitely NOT suitable for beginners. Thurs 15th and Fri 16th July 10am - 4pm £60 or Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd July Bargello with Sarah Soward Bargello is amazing. It’s truly addictive and I feel that it should come with a health warning. If you haven’t done Bargello before then we start with an easy wave pattern to get you into it. If you have done Bargello with us before then you can move onto the Heart Bargello. © Pauline’s Patchwork Ltd 7 Issue 1 Sat 24th and Sun 25th July 10am - 4pm £60 Charming layer cake with Terry Summerfield This can be made in 2 sizes, single bed size or cot quilt size, easily adaptable to make cushions as well. Take a layer cake and a charm pack, cleverly stitch them, grab your rotary cutter and see what hap- pens. The cot quilt uses a charm pack and a mini charm pack. Mon 26th July 10am - 4pm £35 Scrappy happy days with Sarah Soward Raid that fabric stash or buy new, if you prefer. You will need to do cutting before the class. This pattern is very simple, however it looks way more difficult. Thurs 5th and Fri 6th Aug 10am - 4pm £60 Fake Bargello with Sarah Soward Fat quarters and background, a fake Bargello is what you get. It’s so easy. Sat 4th and Sun 5th Sept 10am - 4pm £50 Jelly roll tree with Sarah Soward Let me show you how to make a Tree using a Jelly Roll and back- ground fabric.

In order to combat the unpleasant odors emanating from open sewers, insufficiently bathed neighbors, and, from time to time, the bodies of plague victims, a variety of perfumed goods such as fans, handkerchiefs, gloves, and “sweet bags” were available for purchase. The tradition of offering embroidered sweet bags containing gifts of small scented objects, herbs, or money began in the mid-sixteenth century. Typically, they are about five inches square with a drawstring closure at the top and two to three covered drops at the bottom. Economical housewives could even create their own perfumed mixtures to put inside. A 1621 recipe “to make sweete bags with little cost” reads: Take the buttons of Roses dryed and watered with Rosewater three or foure times put them Muske powder of cloves Sinamon and a little mace mingle the roses and them together and putt them in little bags of Linnen with Powder. The present object has recently been identified as a rare surviving example of a large-format sweet bag, sometimes referred to as a “sachet.” Lined with blue silk taffeta, the verso of the central canvas section contains two flat slit pockets, opening on the long side, into which sprigs of herbs or sachets filled with perfumed powders could be slipped to scent a wardrobe or chest.

The Godey Quilt: One Woman’s Dream Becomes a Reality Sandra Staebell The Godey Quilt is a 1930s appliqué quilt composed of fifteen fabric portraits of men and women clothed in fashionable mid-nineteenth century attire. The dream of Mildred Potter Lissauer (1897−1998) of Louisville, Kentucky, this textile is a largely original design that is not representative of the majority of American quilts made during the early 1930s. Notable for the beauty and quality of its workmanship, the quilt’s crafting was, in part, a response to the competitive spirit that reigned in quiltmaking at the time. Significantly, the survival of the materials that document its conception, design, and construction enhances its significance and can be used to create a timeline of its creation. Reflecting Colonial Revival concepts and imagery, the Godey Quilt is a remarkable physical expression of that era.

To enter this department, you MUST mail in an entry form and entry fee(s) and the closing date to be received is July 25, 2014. “Actual” entry items may be submitted in person or by mail. See “ENTRY RULES & GUIDELINES” in front of handbook for submission dates on hand delivered items or mailed in items. STATE FAIR WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGED, BROKEN AND/OR MISSING ITEMS. All articles entered in competition in the Needlepoint, Crewel and Counted Cross Stitch Department must have been completed by the exhibitor within the last two (2) years. No soiled articles will be accepted. Entries must be of a size suitable to be shown in one of our exhibit cases. No article may exceed 648 square inches, including frame. Unframed items may not exceed 24” L x 18” W x 12” D. ALL ITEMS MUST BE BLOCKED. All hanging articles must be properly equipped with wires, screws or brackets. EDIBLE SUBSTANCES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED ON ITEMS ENTERED. CREWEL (Fancy Work Using Wool Thread) Do Not exceed 648 square inches including frame.
