The Migration of Literary Ideas: The Problem of Romanian Symbolism Cosmina Andreea Roșu ABSTRACT: The migration of symbolists’ ideas in Romanian literary field during the 1900’s occurs mostly due to poets. One of the symbolist poets influenced by the French literature (the core of the Symbolism) and its representatives is Dimitrie Anghel. He manages symbols throughout his entire writings, both in poetry and in prose, as a masterpiece. His vivid imagination and fantasy reinterpret symbols from a specific Romanian point of view. His approach of symbolist ideas emerges from his translations from the French authors but also from his original writings, since he creates a new attempt to penetrate another sequence of the consciousness. Dimitrie Anghel learns the new poetics during his years long staying in France. KEY WORDS: writing, ideas, prose poem, symbol, fantasy. With this anthology of Poems, ParticiPants can gain so much more in listening to their colleagues and sharing mutually in the insights and interPretative ideas of the grouP. There will be no need for either ParticiPating singers or members of the audience to remain uninformed concerning what the songs are about. All attendees of the classes and concerts will have a significantly greater educational and musical exPerience by having word-by-word details of the texts at their fingertiPs. It is an exciting Project to begin building a comPrehensive database of SongFest song texts. Martin All rights reserved ABSTRACT Out of the Néant into the Everyday: A Rediscovery of Mallarmé’s Poetics Séverine C. Martin This dissertation, focusing on the Vers de circonstance, takes issue with traditional views on Stéphane Mallarmé’s aesthetics and his positioning on the relation of art to society. Whereas Mallarmé has often been branded as an ivory-tower poet, invested solely in abstract ideals and removed from the masses, my research demonstrates his interest in concrete essences and the small events of the everyday. As such, the Vers de circonstance offer an exemplary entry point to understanding these poetic preoccupations as the poems of this collection are both characterized by their materiality and their celebration of ordinary festivities. Indeed, most of the poems either accompany or are directly written on objects that were offered as gifts on such occasions as birthdays, anniversaries or seasonal holidays. The omnipresence of objects and dates that can be referred back to real events displays Mallarmé’s on-going questioning on the relation of art to reality. As I show, some of these interrogations rejoin the aesthetic preoccupations of the major artistic currents of the time, such as Impressionism in France and the Decorative Arts in England. These movements were defining new norms for the representation of reality in reaction to the changes of nineteenth century society. -

However, from the opening sentence it The Symbolist Movement in Literature clear that this is no ordinary work of lit crit. This is criticism from a time when such things mattered. Eliot picked a copy off the shelves at Harvard when he was an undergraduate, and it changed his life. James Joyce was inspired by it to go off to Paris in ; Ezra Pound described Symons as one of his "gods". That sounds familiar, and much of this book seems, like HamletThe Symbolist Movement in Literature be full of quotes — not just because so many others have quoted Symons's lines, but because so many of his lines sound so quotable. As I said, this book is about more than the symbolist movement in literature, or a decent clutch of French 19th-century writers. It's about life. When Symons wrote about what it means to lose the world and gain your soul, he would eventually know what that meant: around the time that Eliot was queuing up at the Harvard library lending desk, Symons was having a mental breakdown from which he was told he would never recover he managed to produce a further edition of this work, and several other books of criticism and poetry, but none, except for the additions to this one, quite in this league. -

The transformation in the spirit of Europe revealed the emergence of the conscious, the influence of the unconscious and the discovery of psychoanalysis. Although the fin de siècle was a period of degeneration, the epoch also represented hope for a new beginning. The Belle Epoque in Paris displayed a coat of arms that represented a metaphorical emblem of a tumultuous, sailing ship having an unattainable destination. The national self-awareness engendered a collective pathology, self-confidence and pride that characterized the consciousness of an age. Tidwell ABSTRACT The largest impediment to appreciating Hart Crane as a symbolist modern American poet derives from the fragmentary critical attention paid to his borrowings from and familiarity with French Symbolists like Charles Baudelaire, Arthur Rimbaud, and Stéphane Mallarmé. Almost equally important, the early career of T. S. Eliot exerted a profound impact on Crane’s poetic development and indeed served as the primary introduction to many nineteenth-century French poets for Crane and many other American poets of his generation. This dissertation initially examines contemporary critical definitions of the symbolist method and explores the extent to which Hart Crane’s familiarity with the French language helped shape his exposure to writers such as Baudelaire, Rimbaud, and Mallarmé. -

Based on analysis of over 250 pieces by more than thirty composers, I describe debussysme as a cohesive collection of techniques that emerged in the works of the earliest debussystes, such as Ravel, Debussy, and Florent Schmitt, with aesthetic roots in contemporaneous philosophy of the ¦§¨¨ © ¨ ¨ ¨ § ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¢£ ¤ ¢ ¥ ¥ mind. a diverse group of composers embraced techniques that made new perceptual demands of their listeners: I examine these techniques by drawing on research in the field of music cognition. This study deepens our understanding of French musical modernism, of which debussysme was a key stage. A study of debussysme also teaches us about the nature of shared compositional practices: how they are generated, how they are diffused through social channels, and how individuals align themselves with or disavow fashionable usages. I explore the distinct phases of the debussyste movement and the social motivations of the composers who joined it, with the aid of concepts from sociological research on the diffusion of innovations. As the composers associated with debussysme gained prestige in the French musical community and on concert stages, their shared idiom became commercially viable. -
