Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, P.M.B 5029, Moor Plantation, Ibadan, Nigeria Corresponding author: *[email protected] Target audience: Poultry farmer, nutritionist, feed millers, extension officers Abstract An experiment was conducted with one hundred and eighty (180) unsexed day old broiler chicks of Cobb strain to investigate the effects of feeding diets supplemented with Petevaria alliacaea root meal (PRM) on the performance and carcass characteristics of broiler chicken. The broiler chicken were brooded together for 7 days after which they were randomly distributed into 6 dietary treatments of 30 birds per treatment which were further divided into 3 replicates of 10 birds per replicate in a completely randomized design. Six dietary treatments were formulated such that T1 which is control contained 0.00g/100kg of feed, while T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6 contained 500.00, 1000.00, 1500.00, 2000.00 and 2500.00g/kg of feed respectively. Data were collected on feed intake and weekly weight gain. Blood samples were collected from the animals through the wing web vein for haematological indices evaluation. At 56 days of the experiment, 6 birds were randomly selected per treatment, starved overnight, weighed and sacrificed by cervical dislocation for carcass analysis. Results revealed no significant (P>0.05) difference in all performance characteristics indices measured. Packed cell volume, Haemoglobin concentration, Heterophil and monocytes were significantly (P<0.05) influenced PRM supplementation. The results of carcass characteristics showed significant (P<0.05) difference in the values obtained for gastro intestinal tract, gizzard, heart and liver. It can be concluded that supplementing broilers diets with graded levels of PRM had no detrimental effects on the performance, haematological parameters and carcass characteristics. The morphoanatomical characterization of the leaf and stem was carried out, in order to contribute to the medicinal plant identification. The plant material was fixed, freehand sectioned and stained either with toluidine blue or astra blue and basic fuchsine. Microchemical tests were also applied. The leaf is simple, alternate and elliptic. The blade exhibits paracytic stomata on the abaxial side, non-glandular trichomes and dorsiventral mesophyll. The midrib is biconvex and the petiole is plain-convex, both traversed by collateral vascular bundles adjoined with sclerenchymatic caps. The stem, in incipient secondary growth, presents epidermis, angular collenchyma, starch sheath and collateral vascular organization. Several prisms of calcium oxalate are seen in the leaf and stem. They are well known as public enemies for their noise nuisance, biting annoyance, sleeplessness, allergic reactions, and diseases transmission during the biting and feeding activities. This then necessitate the search for insecticides of plant origin which are bio-degradable, non-toxic, and readily available for man use. Result: This study, evaluated the fumigant efficacy of the powder of P. alliacea to control the adult stage of Culex mosquito. Powder of Petiveria alliacea were administered at different dose of (1 g, 2 g, 3 g, 4 g, and 5 g), respectively. Result obtained shows the fumigant effect of the powder were effective with percentage mortality of 18.33–60.00% for the leaf powder and 23.30–71.60% for the root powder within 2 h post-treatment period (P < 0.05). The synergistic effect of the leaf and root powder was also investigated. The lethal dosage (LD50) of the leaf, root, and synergistic effect of leaf and root bark powder required to kill 50% of the adult Culex quinquefasciatus was 3.76 g, 2.86 g, and 2.63 g, respectively.

SUMMARY Petiveria and Rivina have been placed by various authors close to each other within Phytolaccaceae; widely separated from each other but both within Phytolaccaceae; and within a segregate family (Rivinaceae) but still within the order Caryophyllales. Wood of these monotypic genera proves to be alike in salient qualitative and even quantitative features, including presence of a second cambium, vessel morphology and pit size, nonbordered perforation plates, vasicentric axial parenchyma type, fiber-tracheids with vestigially bordered pits and starch contents, nar­ row multiseriate rays plus a few uniseriate rays, ray cells predominant­ ly upright and with thin lignified walls and starch content, and presence of both large styloids and packets of coarse raphides in secondary phloem. Although further data are desirable, wood and stern data do not strongly support separation of Petiveria and Rivina from Phyto­ laccaceae. Quantitative wood features correspond to the short-lived perennial habit ofboth genera, and are indicative ofaxeromorphic wood pattern.     Bothalia 43,1: 97–100 (2013) Notes on naturalised plants VARIOUS AUTHORS PETIVERIA ALLIACEA IN KWAZULU-NATAL, SOUTH AFRICA Petiveria alliacea L. is a New World herbaceous per- ennial of the family Phytolaccaceae. It has a wide natu- ral distribution from Texas and Florida in the southern United States (Patton & Judd 1986; NatureServe 2011) southward to Ecuador (Jørgensen & León-Yánez 1999) and Argentina (USDA 2011) as well as on a number of Caribbean islands (Zanoni & Buck 1999; USDA 2011). It is commonly known as Guinea-hen weed, erva-Guiné or anamú (Spanish) or mucura caa (Portuguese) (Defi l- lips & Maina 2002; Glen 2004; Nienaber & Thieret 2008). The generic name honours James Petiver (1658– 1718), an English apothecary and botanist (Nienaber & Thieret 2008). The specifi c epithet alliacea refers to the garlic odour emitted from its crushed leaves (Hecklau et al. 2005). Petiveria alliacea does not tolerate frost (Lonard & Judd 1991) and in its native range occurs in coastal regions, evergreen or deciduous woodland, secondary thickets as well as pastures and shrublands (Vázquez & Kolterman 1998; Jørgensen & León-Yánez 1999). Petiveria alliacea is cultivated as an ornamental garden plant in South Africa (Glen 2004), the earliest recorded collection dating back to 1883 (Wood 415, NH) from the Durban Botanical Gardens. In 1932 and 1979 further collections were made from cultivated plants in the gardens (Anon. s.n., NH; Du Toit 2749, NH; Pien- aar 74, NH). A total of 288 eigh- teen-week-old Isa brown pullets were used for the 25-week study. The pullets were arranged in a 2 × 4 factorial experimental layout in a completely randomized design. The pullets were distributed into two groups administered root extract or leaf ex- tract. Pullets in each group were allotted to four subgroups administered aqueous extracts of Petiveria alliacea at 15, 30 and 45 g l–1 concentration levels making eight treatments in total. Each treatment was replicated three times with twelve pullets per replicate. Eimeria oocyst counts and intestinal bacteria counts were lower (P < 0.0001 and P = 0.0028, respectively) in hens administered 15, 30 and 45 g l–1 of Petiveria alliacea extracts than the control. The highest (P < 0.0001) antibody titre against –1 Newcastle disease vaccine was recorded in hens administered 30 and 45 g l concentrations of root (9.06 and 9.10 log2, re- spectively) and leaf (9.08 and 9.18 log2, respectively) extracts. The liver sections of hens in all treatments appeared normal.
