This author considers it necessary that the French-speaking population understand that English instruction need not harm students’ school performance in any subject, including French. Individuals need to have access to accurate and diversified information about research on second language instruction. The thesis research reported here investigated how three French-language newspapers in Quebec (Le Devoir and La Presse, from Montreal, and Le Soleil, from Quebec City) framed the debate about the Ministère de l’Éducation, Loisir et Sports’s (MELS) announcement of their intention to implement a mandatory intensive English program policy in all Quebec schools (Grade Six) between July 2010 and July 2012. The theoretical framework for this study was frame analysis (Entman, 1993; Goffman, 1974; Hallahan, 2008; McCombs, 2004; Pan, 2008; Scheufele, 2008).The study investigated how positive or gain frames contrast with negative or loss frames, with details of how the publications under study chose to position themselves on the issue. In total, 60 newspaper articles (news, editorials, op-eds and letters) containing the key words ‘anglais intensif’ [‘intensive English’] were studied.

  • Ice Hockey and Québécois Nationalism
Central European Journal of Canadian Studies Revue d’Etudes Canadiennes en Europe Centrale volume 10/11 (2016) | (11–29) Playing for the “Bleu et Blanc” or for the Habs: Ice Hockey and Québécois Nationalism Jouer pour le « Bleu et Blanc » ou pour les Habs: Hockey et le nationalisme québécois articles — Glen M. E. Duerr articles Abstract In 2005, former Bloc Québécois (BQ) leader Gilles Duceppe called for the creation of inde- pendent ice hockey and soccer teams for Quebec. As the federal representative for the sov- ereigntist movement, Duceppe was mainly trying to make a political statement. However, Duceppe was also trying to cast a vision of a future Quebec wherein its young athletes could aspire to representing Quebec in high-level international tournaments. As a result of situations like this one, the issue of Quebec nationalism, at times, has interlinked with the sport of ice hockey. Prior to the 1995 independence referendum in Quebec, for example, the Toronto Star newspaper compiled a hypothetical list of Quebec national ice hockey team players, including some of the biggest stars in the game at that time, such as Patrick Roy, Mario Lemieux, and Luc Robitaille. This article examines several different facets of the complex nationalist question, including the political uses of the Montreal Canadiens as a vehicle of nationalism, as well as international tournaments designed to give Quebec a place on the world stage.
