Denys Arcand The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release November 1994 DENYS ARCAND November 18 - December 2, 1994 An exhibition of works by Quebec writer/director Denys Arcand (b. 1941), one of the most consistently interesting and perceptive filmmakers working in North America, is on view at The Museum of Modern Art from November 18 to December 2, 1994. Including fifteen documentaries and fiction films, DENYS ARCAND provides a rare opportunity to see a range of the filmmaker's works, which, but for a few, have not been shown in this country. Arcand's films are distinguished by a dry wit inflected by an unsentimental empathy. Although his documentaries involve the political and social realities of life in Quebec, their wry analyses and mock detachment trandscend provincialism. Arcand's theatrical films concern the myriad forms of alienation -- sexual and economic, in particular -- that define contemporary life. The exhibition features the two films for which Arcand may be best known in the United States: Le declin de Vempire americain (The Decline of the American Empire, 1985), about a group of friends who gather one autumn day in a comfortable country house; and Jesus de Montreal (Jesus of Montreal, 1989), which details what happens when an updated Passion Play is staged with an excess of enthusiasm. - more - 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019-5498 Tel 212-708-9400 Coble: MODERNART Telex: 62370 MODART 2 Also presented in the series are two documentaries by Arcand -- Quebec: Duplessis et apres... (Quebec: Duplessis and After, 1972) and Le contort et 1'indifference (Comfort and Indifference, 1981) -- that are especially timely. These works address the issue of sovereignty for Quebec, which the recently elected Parti Quebecois supports. Additional highlights include Rejeanne Padovani (1972), a dark Montreal satire about power and corruption; On est au coton (Cotton Mill: Treadmill, 1969), an expose of labor exploitation, which was originally banned by the National Film Board of Canada that commissioned the film; La maudite galette (The Damned Loot, 1971), the story of an in-family robbery gone wrong and Arcand's first theatrical feature; Gina (1974), a fictional work about a stripper based on acquaintances that the filmmaker and crew made while shooting On est au coton; Le crime d'Ovide Plouffe (The Crime of Ovide Plouffe, 1984), the story of a young man who resists his mother's wish to become a priest; and Seul ou avec d'autres (Alone or with Others, 1962), Quebec's first independent film, which Arcand collaborated on as a student at the University of Montreal. DENYS ARCAND was organized by Laurence Kardish, Curator, Department of Film and Video, and is made possible through the collaboration of Telefilm Canada, Cinematheque Ontario, La Cinematheque Quebegoise, and the National Film Board of Canada. Support for this program is also given by Alliance Communications Corporation, the Canadian Consulate General, New York, and the Quebec Government House, New York. * * * No. 63 For further information or film stills, contact Christine Dietlin, Film Press Representative, Department of Public Information, 212/708-9752. The Museum off Modern Art 50th Anniversary NO. 16 ID FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 3, 1981 DOCUMENTARY FILMS FROM THE NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA FEATURED AT MoMA NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA: A RETROSPECTIVE is a three-part tribute presented by The Museum of Modern Art in recog nition of NFBC's 41 years Of exceptional filmmaking. PART TWO: DOCUMENTARY FILMS, running from March 26 through May 12 in the Museum's Roy and Niuta Titus Auditorium, will trace the develop ment of the documentary form at NFBC, and will be highlighted by a selection of some of the finest films directed by Donald Brittain, whose work has won wide acclaim and numerous awards. PART TWO: DOCUMENTARY will get off to an auspicious start with twelve of Donald Brittain's powerful and unconventional portraits of exceptional individuals. Best known in this country for "Volcano: An Inquiry Into The Life and Death of Malcolm Lowry" (1976), Brittain brings his personal stamp of creative interpretation to such subjects as America's love affair with the automobile in "Henry Ford's America" (1976) ; the flamboyant Lord Thompson of Fleet Street (the newspaper baron who just sold the cornerstone of his empire, The London Times) in "Never A Backward Step" (1966); Norman Bethune, the Canadian poet/ doctor/revolutionary who became a great hero in China when he marched with Mao ("Bethune" 1964); and the phenomenal media hysteria sur rounding the famous quintuplets in "The Diorme Years" (1979) . "Memo randum" (1965) accompanies a Jewish glazier from Tcronto when he takes his son back to the concentration camp where he was interned, an emotion al and historical pilgrimage of strong impact and sensitivity.

  • Intensive English in Quebec: Popular Attitudes and News Media Debates
Intensive English in Quebec: popular attitudes and news media debates by Mirian Olívia da Silva Perez Department of Integrated Studies in Education Faculty of Education, McGill University, Montreal April, 2013 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts © Mirian Olívia da Silva Perez, 2013 1 Abstract In the province of Quebec, Canada, linguistic issues are often covered by the French- language news media in a way that vilifies the English language and victimizes the French language. This author considers it necessary that the French-speaking population understand that English instruction need not harm students’ school performance in any subject, including French. Individuals need to have access to accurate and diversified information about research on second language instruction. The thesis research reported here investigated how three French-language newspapers in Quebec (Le Devoir and La Presse, from Montreal, and Le Soleil, from Quebec City) framed the debate about the Ministère de l’Éducation, Loisir et Sports’s (MELS) announcement of their intention to implement a mandatory intensive English program policy in all Quebec schools (Grade Six) between July 2010 and July 2012. The theoretical framework for this study was frame analysis (Entman, 1993; Goffman, 1974; Hallahan, 2008; McCombs, 2004; Pan, 2008; Scheufele, 2008).The study investigated how positive or gain frames contrast with negative or loss frames, with details of how the publications under study chose to position themselves on the issue. In total, 60 newspaper articles (news, editorials, op-eds and letters) containing the key words ‘anglais intensif’ [‘intensive English’] were studied.
