Communication takes place even amongst the animals and other species. Birds are known to learn their song by hearing other birds; whales are known to learn their noises by hearing the noises of other whales; the bees have their own system of communication. A bee can fly a distance of about 8 km, and if it does discover a source of honey there, it returns to the beehive and informs the other bees about the availability of honey nearby, by symbols; it begins a dance that informs the other bees to follow it. However, human language is way beyond that of the species. The first specialty of human language is that it is not modality specific. In other words, it can be conveyed either through the auditive modality, where you hear words, or through the visual modality, where you see written script, or through the tactile modality, as you do through Braille etc. Further, human language has the specialty of recursivity. Recursivity is where we include one clause in another and that can be included in yet another clause. For example, the sentence that the Second International Conference on Language, Literature, and Community has gotten underway in Bhubaneshwar, which is the capital of the state of Odisha, and also its largest city. We find in this sentence one clause within another, within another, which is the quality of recursivity. The second specialty of human language is the quality of displacement where we can refer to events, not in the same place, of another place and of another time. The other specialty of human language is the quality of productivity which means that the available symbols can be combined, through a complex system of grammar and syntax, to create an infinite variety of expressions. Although the animals do have their means of communication, an average four year old human knows far more symbols than any of the animals. The main purpose of language is communication and it may be in the form of verbal communication or non-verbal communication conveying desires, ideas and emotions. Language is naturally acquired. It is suggested that there is a built-in mechanism which gives human beings the ability to acquire and learn language; we are biologically conditioned to learn language. Similarly truth, non-violence and peace are natural to us. Let us not shun them and turn to violence. There is no denying the fact that languages are part of the cultural richness of our society and the world in which we try to lead our lives controlled and cleanly and work. Language is the soul of culture. It is obvious that learning languages contributes to mutual understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal commitment. Students learn to appreciate different countries cultures, communities and people. By making comparisons, they gain insight into their own culture and society.     A Minimalist analysis of Uyghur genitives Stephen Politzer-Ahles University of Kansas Abstract This paper investigates the syntactic structure of so-called genitive-possessive DPs in Uyghur, a Turkic language. Uyghur genitive-possessives bear suffixes on both the “possessing” entity (comparable to the Saxon genitive 's in English) and the “possessed” one. The suffix on the “possessor”, -ning, is considered a genitive case marker; the suffix on the “possessed” has multiple allomorphs and is considered an agreement marker that agrees in person and number with the “possessor”. Based on the multiplicity of semantic roles that the “possessing” object may bear, and the observation that it may be dropped from the DP, an analogy is made between genitive-possessive DPs and finite TPs. It is proposed that “possessors” behave in a manner parallel to that of subjects of TPs: they are introduced by a quasi-functional head n or within a gerund, and raise to [Spec,DP] to receive genitive case from D. The agreement suffix, on the other hand, is treated as the phonological realization of an Agr head that is introduced with unvalued phi-features, features which are valued when the “possessing” entity passes through the specifier of AgrP. Adopting this structure can explain data on the realization of definiteness in genitive and non-genitive DPs, and the distribution of adverbials within gerunds. Introduction One of the key components to a theory of noun phrase structure is an explanation of how possessive marking is carried out within the DP. For example, a theory of English DPs owes an explanation of where the 's comes from in phrases like “John’s book”, and how case-checking is done in such a phrase.

Two types of relative clauses are used in modern Uyghur: one in which the subject is in the Nominative and the other in which the subject is in the Genitive and the head noun bears possessive agreement. While not Uyghur An Intermediate Textbook 1st edition unless you are already somewhat familiar with the language, this may not be bad as a refresher, although some of the forms given are outdated and no single point is truly explored in great detail. Have not looked through this one yet, but it looks like a neat little document. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. Lists with This Book. A friend of mine who used this book in his middle school classes recommended it to me, and it looks fairly good and comprehensive. If you're just a learner of the language, I would recommend skipping on this one unless you're at an intermediate or advanced level and would like another refresher on auxiliary verbs, in which case Section 2 may be of benefit. The number of native Uyghur speakers is currently estimated to be more than 12 million all over the world (Uyghur language is spoken by more than 11 million people in East Turkistan, the Uyghur homeland. It is also spoken by more than 300,000 people in Kazakhstan, and there are Uyghur-speaking communities in Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, India, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Mongolia, Australia, Germany, the United States of America, Canada and other countries). The Old Uyghur language has a great number of loanwords adopted from different languages at different historical periods. The loanwords come from sources such as ancient Chinese, the ancient Eastern Iranian languages of Saka, Tocharian and Soghdian of the Tarim Basin. Medieval Uyghur, which developed from Old Uyghur and Karakhanid Turkic, is in contrast to Old Uyghur, is a language containing a substantial amount of Arabic and Persian lexical elements. Modern Uyghur was developed on the basis of Chaghatay Turki, which had also been heavily influenced by Arabic and Persian vocabularies.

A STUDY ON “KASHGAR PRINTS”: “EASTERN TURKI” PRINTED MATERIALS PUBLISHED BY THE SWEDISH MISSION PRESS IN KASHGAR (1892-1938) Eset SÜLAYMAN* ABSTRACT In 1892, the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden (Svenska Missionsförbundet) decided to open a new mission field in Kashgar, Xinjiang. The first Swedish missionaries began their activities there in January of 1892. The mission set up its own printing office in Kashgar in 1912, which, until 1938, was the only printing press in existence there. During the 25 years of its operation, it printed and published thousands of books in the Eastern Turki (Uyghur) language which included religious literature and secular materials. Moreover, it also printed various kinds of textbooks, calendars, tracts and also modern newspapers. Before Soviet Russia had influence in Xinjiang in the 1930s, the cultural and educational activities of the Swedish missionaries, especially the work of their modernized printing press, assumed an important role in the formation of Modern Uyghur. This is considered a tremendous achievement in twentieth century Uyghur cultural history. The printed materials enabled this isolated Eastern Turkic language to form and improve itself to become a modern language. In support of the literary and educational activities in Xinjiang were many Swedish 75 Eastern Turki experts who engaged in linguistic and literary research. Gustaf Raquette (1871- 1945), Gustaf Ahlbert (1884-1943), Sigfrid Moen (1897-?), Oscar Hermansson (1889-1951) and the outstanding Swedish Turcologist, the late Gunnar Jarring, were all very active in the studies of the Eastern Turki (Uyghur) language and culture.

African and African American Studies AAAS 197Y Critiquing Black Muslim Reason CourseID: 213299 Faculty: Next Term Offered: This seminar asks: What does it mean to be Black in the United States? What does it mean to be a Muslim in the United States? What happens when these two identities compound or collide with one another? Well, what about Black Muslim Womanhood, for example? There are scholars who have discussed the "triple constraints" that Black Muslim Women, for example, face as they navigate the American public sphere. As well, while we directly confront questions of citizenship and belonging and without relying too heavily on critical race theory, we will take some time to think about how these sites of identity (and their reception) specifically impact Black Muslims in the United States. The primary purpose of this course?seminar?is to try to disentangle these sites of identity while understanding that for the people who are Black, Muslim, Female, and/or Migrant, there is no way to properly understand how people are subjected to various forms of marginalization, or resist structural racism or sexism, combat Islamophobia, or articulate what it means to either have or gain citizenship, or build communities where their whole selves are affirmed, by thinking that these identities are ever separable. The secondary aim of this course on Black Muslims is to think more deeply about how such a term has historically been applied to African-American Muslims (that is, American-born Muslims of African descent).
