Modern Uyghur, pronounced [ȤȚǺ'ȑȚə] (roughly ooi-ĞOOR) is known in Uyghur as Hazirqi also written) ﺋﯘﻳﻐﯘر ﺗﯩﻠﻰless formally as Uyghur tili ,ﮬﺎزﯨﺮﻗﻰ زاﻣﺎن ﺋﯘﻳﻐﯘر ﺗﯩﻠﻰ zaman Uyghur tili Уйғурчə, Uyƃurqə).1 Uyghur is a southeastern) ﯘﯘرە Уйғур тили, Uyƃur tili) or Uyghurche Turkic language (ISO 639-3: uig) spoken by approximately 10 million people in Chinese Turkestan (Xinjiang / Sinkiang 新疆 Uyghur Autonomous Region) in western China,2 as well as in neighboring Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and in smaller diaspora communities around the world. Uyghur is one of 56 official languages of the People’s Republic of China. It has three dialects (northern, Khotan (Hotän, Xoten), and Lop Nur), and a number of local vernaculars. Modern Uyghur is typologically similar to modern Uzbek (with which it shares a medieval ancestral language, Chaghatay), and Uyghur serves as a lingua franca (common language of communication) for many other ethnic groups in Xinjiang, such as the Tatars, Uzbeks, Sibes, Huis (Dunggans), Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Russians, and Oyrat Mongols.

Hajiyeva GALIBA Nakhchivan State Univresity, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract One of the sources dealing with the ancient Turkic history are toponyms. Toponymic investigations show that most of the ancient geographical names which have spread in Eurosia, in Central Asia, from North Africa, to Eastern Turkistan even in Siberia and these names were formed before Roman and Byzantine periods. So development of toponymic investigations, study of the history of Turkic peoples and scientific investigation of existing geographical names which keep the history of Turkic peoples have great significance. One of the uninvestigated fields of the Turkic history are geographical names keeping historical facts within are the holy Balkan areas. The toponymic investigations carried on the Balkans show that these territories are the places were the ancient Turkic tribes were firstly settled and possessed. This fact is proved by the Turkic tribe names and by the words of different semantic meaning of the languages of Turkic tribes. The great deal of Balkan geographical names are the names derived out of ethnoniyms thus the names reflecting ancient Turkic tribe names (Astipos//Astepe//Ishtip, Izletdere, Vardar, Sofular, Gilan, Sahsuvar kariyesi, Kosalar village, Tatarli kariyesi, in the Kosova, Uskup, Usturumca, Kumanova, Propishtip, Kochana, Makedonska Kamenika in Makedony, Araz district, Arazli, Azman, Cepine, Coban, Chorlu, Culfalar, Horozlar, Kangirlar, Sakarli, Sungurlar, Karuk, Kaspi, Kaz//Kas, Kazancilar, Kecililer, Kuman, Padarlar, Sofular, Tatar, Uzlar in Bulgaria) show that Balkans historically were Turkic areas. Geographical names are the real witnesses of history. We must pay great attention to the scientific investigations of the geographical names in Balkan states.

The men’s good looks, broad smiles, matching windswept hair styles and shared fashion sensibilities bridge a 51-year age gap. Both are singers who have enjoyed the adoration of a passionate fan following, yet in terms of the version of masculinity each represents, the two could not be more different. While Jagger is openly admired by both sexes, few men admit to being fans of Harry Styles whose following is commonly depicted as restricted to teen and pre-teen females. Unlike the older man, Styles radiates a wholesome, good humoured exuberance, appears to genuinely like female company and is never happier than when exalting the women in his life. He also differs from the Rolling Stones leader in showing a marked preference for older female partners, whereas Jagger figure 5.1 Harry Styles. 84 Weapons of Mass Seduction is always seen in the company of much younger women.1 Jagger’s androgy- nous charm is tinged with danger and more than a hint of misogyny: he has a reputation for treating his partners callously, and from the outset, chauvinism themes of mistrust permeated the Rolling Stones’ songbook.2 The younger singer is also androgynous but his failure to comply with core characteristics of normative masculinity underscores much of the antipathy directed towards by critics, highlighting deeply entrenched prejudice against those who fail to comply with accepted expressions of gender.

A beard is the beauty of a man; proverbs are the beauty of speech. Abstract: This article presents two groups of Uyghur proverbs on the topics of friendship and wisdom, to my knowledge only the second set of Uyghur proverbs published with English translation (after Mahmut & Smith-Finley 2016). It begins with a brief introduction of Uyghur language and culture, then a description of Uyghur proverb styles, then the two sets of proverbs, and finally a few concluding comments. Key words: Proverb, Uyghur, folly, wisdom, friend, enemy 1. Introduction Uyghur is spoken by about 10 million people, mostly in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It is a Turkic language, most closely related to Uzbek and Salar, but also sharing similarity with its neighbors Kazakh and Kyrgyz. The lexicon is composed of about 50% old Turkic roots, 40% relatively old borrowings from Arabic and Persian, and 6% from Russian and 2% from Mandarin (Nadzhip 1971; since then, the Russian and Mandarin borrowings have presumably seen a slight increase due to increased language contact, especially with Mandarin). The grammar is generally head-final, with default SOV clause structure, A-N noun phrases, and postpositions. Stress is typically word-final. Its phoneme inventory includes eight vowels and 24 consonants. The phonology includes vowel harmony in both roots and suffixes, which is sensitive to rounded/unrounded (labial harmony) and front/back (palatal harmony), consonant harmony across suffixes, which is sensitive to voiced/unvoiced and front/back distinctions; and frequent devoicing of high vowels (see Comrie 1997 and Hahn 1991 for details).

    SELECTED WORKS OF CHOKAN VALIKHANOV CHOKAN OF WORKS SELECTED SELECTED WORKS OF CHOKAN VALIKHANOV Pioneering Ethnographer and Historian of the Great Steppe When Chokan Valikhanov died of tuberculosis in 1865, aged only 29, the Russian academician Nikolai Veselovsky described his short life as ‘a meteor flashing across the field of oriental studies’. Set against his remarkable output of official reports, articles and research into the history, culture and ethnology of Central Asia, and more important, his Kazakh people, it remains an entirely appropriate accolade. Born in 1835 into a wealthy and powerful Kazakh clan, he was one of the first ‘people of the steppe’ to receive a Russian education and military training. Soon after graduating from Siberian Cadet Corps at Omsk, he was taking part in reconnaissance missions deep into regions of Central Asia that had seldom been visited by outsiders. His famous mission to Kashgar in Chinese Turkestan, which began in June 1858 and lasted for more than a year, saw him in disguise as a Tashkent mer- chant, risking his life to gather vital information not just on current events, but also on the ethnic make-up, geography, flora and fauna of this unknown region. Journeys to Kuldzha, to Issyk-Kol and to other remote and unmapped places quickly established his reputation, even though he al- ways remained inorodets – an outsider to the Russian establishment. Nonetheless, he was elected to membership of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society and spent time in St Petersburg, where he was given a private audience by the Tsar. Wherever he went he made his mark, striking up strong and lasting friendships with the likes of the great Russian explorer and geographer Pyotr Petrovich Semyonov-Tian-Shansky and the writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

In Xinjiang the international lingua franca English, the national official language Mandarin Chinese, and major Turkic languages such as Uyghur and Kazakh interact and compete for linguistic prestige in different social scenarios. The power relations between the Turkic languages, including the Uyghur language, and Mandarin Chinese is one in which minority languages are surrounded by a dominant state language supported through various institutions such as school and mass media. The much greater symbolic capital that the “legitimate language” Mandarin Chinese carries enables its native speakers to have easier access than the native Turkic speakers to jobs in the labor market. Therefore, many Uyghur parents face the dilemma of choosing between maintaining their cultural and linguistic identity and making their children more socioeconomically mobile. The entry of the global language English and the recent capitalist development in China has led to English education becoming market-oriented and commodified, which has further complicated the linguistic picture in Xinjiang.

The researched issues also include the identification of factors provoked by humans and the state to launch these migrations. Surprisingly enough, opposite to the claims made by independent Kazakhstan leadership in the early 2000s, the number of Kazakhs in Kyrgyzstan wishing to become repatriates to their native country is still far from the desired. Thus the article is an attempt to find out what reasons and factors influence the Kazakh residents’ desire to stay in the neighboring country as a minority. To provide the answer, the authors analyzed the dynamics of statistical variations in the number of migrants and the reasons of these changes. The other key point in tracing what characteristic features separate Kazakhs in Kyrgyzstan and their kinsmen in Kazakhstan is the archival data, statistical, historical, and field sources, which provide a systematic overview of the largely unstudied pages of the history of the Kazakh diaspora.

    TRAMES, 2012, 16(66/61), 3, 237–285 OFFICIAL COLOURS OF CHINESE REGIMES: A PANCHRONIC PHILOLOGICAL STUDY WITH HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS OF CHINA Jingyi Gao Institute of the Estonian Language, University of Tartu, and Tallinn University Abstract. The paper reports a panchronic philological study on the official colours of Chinese regimes. The historical accounts of the Chinese regimes are introduced. The official colours are summarised with philological references of archaic texts. Remarkably, it has been suggested that the official colours of the most ancient regimes should be the three primitive colours: (1) white-yellow, (2) black-grue yellow, and (3) red-yellow, instead of the simple colours. There were inconsistent historical records on the official colours of the most ancient regimes because the composite colour categories had been split. It has solved the historical problem with the linguistic theory of composite colour categories. Besides, it is concluded how the official colours were determined: At first, the official colour might be naturally determined according to the substance of the ruling population. There might be three groups of people in the Far East. (1) The developed hunter gatherers with livestock preferred the white-yellow colour of milk. (2) The farmers preferred the red-yellow colour of sun and fire. (3) The herders preferred the black-grue-yellow colour of water bodies. Later, after the Han-Chinese consolidation, the official colour could be politically determined according to the main property of the five elements in Sino-metaphysics. The red colour has been predominate in China for many reasons.
