PRESENTATION AT REGIONE LOMBARDIA OF THE WORLD CUP RACES SCHEDULED IN SANTA CATERINA IN DECEMBER The two Alpine Skiing World Cup men’s races were presented today in Milan, as part of the press conference organized by the non-profit organization “Cancro Primo Aiuto” to present Trofeo Walter Fontana, which includes winter sports races of all levels on the Valtellina slopes. On December 28, the Deborah Compagnoni track in Santa Caterina Valfurva (Sondrio) will host the downhill race, while the next day it’s going to be Alpine combined time (last year it took place in Kitzbuehel – Aut), which will consist of a super-G and one slalom manche. You can already ski in Santa Caterina and six European Cup slaloms are currently scheduled on the slope starting from yesterday and up to Saturday. The press conference took place at Palazzo Lombardia and was attended by Antonio Rossi (Regione Councilor for sports) and Viviana Beccalossi (Regione Councilor for territory), Flavio Roda (Fisi President), Marco Rocca (Livigno), Maurizio Gandolfi representing the races’ Organizing Committee and Omar Galli (race director). Gandolfi explained the exceptional friendliness of Alta Valtellina when speaking of the World Cup. “No other ski resort can count on two tracks of the highest level just a few kilometers from each other such as Bormio and Santa Caterina. In the near future we would like to go back to Bormio, but we know we can always count on the openness of Santa Caterina for its unique climatic conditions, representing a guarantee.” ! LO SCI ALPINO Silvia Martinalli 1) Storia STORIA DELLO SCI Lo sci alpino in senso moderno iniziò a svilupparsi soltanto a partire dalla metà del XIX e nel 1896 un Austriaco introdusse un nuovo metodo per curvare che si avvicinava molto a quello dello sci moderno. Nel secondo dopoguerra lo sci alpino non è più solo un passatempo per gente di montagna o ricchi turisti ma diventa sport di massa grazie anche al nascere di stazioni sciistiche attrezzate con numerosi impianti di risalita. Lo sci alpino moderno si articola in 4 diverse discipline: discesa libera, super gigante, slalom gigante e slalom speciale. GARE ED EVOLUZIONE DELLA DISCIPLINA Le gare di sci erano assai diffuse già nel XIX secolo nei paesi scandinavi, ma si trattava principalmente di gare di sci nordico. A fine Ottocento sulle Alpi iniziarono a disputarsi le prime gare alpine, come la discesa del 1893 in Austria o la discesa organizzata in Germania dal Club della Foresta Nera, con un dislivello di 160 metri. Alla fine del XIX secolo e l'inizio del XX nacquero numerosi club e associazioni per la promozione dello sci soprattutto nei paesi alpini, in quelli scandinavi e nel Nord America; furono soprattutto gli inglesi a contribuire allo sviluppo delle gare di discesa, tipicamente alpine, snobbate per altro dagli scandinavi, appassionati di sci di fondo. 2) Gli sci Sci da discesa Per lo sci alpino, fino alla metà degli anni 90, gli sci erano lunghi e quasi dritti lateralmente (in realtà già avevano una leggera sciancratura). Oggi si usano sci sciancrati cioè dalla forma parabolica: stretti al centro e più larghi in punta e coda, sono i cosiddetti sci carving.

The winners’ list of the numerous World Cup stages organized in Sestriere since 1967 – many part being of in the prestigious Arlberg-Kandahar “Classic” – really is impressive… Most of the stars and “Skiing Legends” from the 1960s until 2016 excelled on the various slopes of the Vialattea which also hosted thrilling medal events back in 1997 (FIS World Championships) and 2006 (Olympics), without forgetting the exciting World Cup Finals in 2004! Among the winners on the women’s tour one can find the name of two Italian aces - Giustina Demetz who enjoyed a memorable win in downhill in March 1967 (sharing first place with France’s exceptional Marielle Goitschel) while Maria Rosa Quario won a slalom later on in 1983! In January 2020, a group of specialists of the “Squadra Rosa” will surely be fighting hard to claim the first Italian victory in a World Cup giant slalom race on the challenging G. Agnelli course, 23 years after the gold medal triumphs of Deborah Compagnoni in both tech events of the FIS World Championships. Interestingly enough, there are several Italian candidates ready to strike as shown by the results of the first competitions held in Austria and North America, where four Italian champions celebrated a brilliant victory and several podium finishes in three different specialties – giant slalom, downhill and Super-G. She has already won six in slalom and three overall (both including 2018/19). • Shiffrin could become the third alpine skier from the United States to win the ladies' giant slalom crystal globe, after Tamara McKinney (1981, 1983) and Marilyn Cochran (1969). • Shiffrin officially secured her third successive overall World Cup after the cancelled races in Sochi last week. She equalled Janica Kostelic, Petra Kronberger and Vreni Schneider (all 3) in third place for most ladies' overall crystal globes, behind Annemarie Moser-Pröll (6) and Lindsey Vonn (4). • Shiffrin became the fourth woman to win three consecutive overall crystal globes, after Vonn (2008-2010), Kronberger (1990-1992) and Moser-Pröll (5, 1971-1975). • Shiffrin can become the fifth woman to win the slalom and giant slalom crystal globes in one season, after Tanja Poutiainen (2005), Anja Pärson (2004), Schneider (1989, 1995) and Lise-Marie Morerod (1977). • Pärson (2004), Schneider (1989, 1995) and Morerod (1977) also won the overall World Cup in those seasons. • The last woman to win three World Cup standings in one season was Anna Veith in 2015, when she won the overall, giant slalom and Alpine combined. Newspapers print lengthy daily sports reports, and some television stations are devoted exclusively to sports reporting. During an Olympic year, sports events are featured around the clock on most television stations and even very young children are keenly aware that something important is happening in the world about them. The National Hockey League playoffs, the NBA playoffs, World Cup soccer and the World Series dominate discussion and viewing habits in many households. During major sports or playoff events, adults in households across North America demonstrate intense interest and emotional commitment to the sports events unfolding on television screens before them. Young children watching are quick to learn, in both subtle and overt ways, that competitive sports appear to provide adults with enduring interest and entertainment. The imaginative mathematics teacher may find many opportune ‘teachable moments’ in studies of local and worldwide sports events.
