The COVID-19 pandemic brought many changes to BYC racing during the summer of 2020. Racing began in the summer with smaller fleets, although the less competitive nature of the racing did bring out a number of boats new to BYC racing.! Many of the Buzzard’s Bay Trophy races were cancelled in 2020, although BYC was able to run the Parker Converse Tower race and the Hurricane Cup. BYC was finally able to start organized Series Racing again on July 9th. During the summer of 2020 BYC was able to hold over 90 races, run by 87 BYC volunteer Race Officers. The Race Committee did not score races in 2020 because of all the uncertainties related to COVID-19, but participants were recorded. Additionally, BYC’s Fall Racing series from September 13, 2020 to October 11, 2020 was highly successful, attracting more than the regular number of BYC participants. The BYC Race Committee has been hard at work this fall and winter planning a full schedule of races for the summer of 2021 as well as preparing contingencies for the possibility of continuing to only be allowed to race under some form of Commonwealth or local Guidelines. Preparing for contingencies is good planning and will allow BYC to always be prepared to provide support for racing at BYC this summer. Should this discourage you from thinking about or preparing to race at BYC in the summer of 2021? Absolutely not! Under the toughest of Guidelines last summer BYC racers and the Race Committee persevered to continue the long and proud tradition of racing at BYC. This summer, we should all be just as committed to continuing that BYC legacy and tradition. Please don’t forget that racing at BYC is Member run. The Race Committee is always seeking volunteer Members to assist running BYC races on Commodores. I would strongly encourage all of BYC’s Members, whether you actively participate in any of the racing series at BYC or not, to consider volunteering to assist in putting on BYC’s races. After all, the view from Commodores on a gorgeous summer afternoon is pretty hard to beat… You don’t have to know a lot about sailboat racing. There are many roles on the committee boat; check in, timing, scoring, flag handler, etc. that can be done with little or no sailboat racing knowledge or experience. And all of these roles, from the Race Officer to the assisting Race Officers are critical to allow BYC to provide the quantity and quality of racing that our Club is known for. Sign up to be a BYC race volunteer is on the BYC web site, on the “RACING” tab, under the “Commodores Assistance” menu option. The Bicentennial Summer of 1976 is now past and boaters will be spending the month of October putting away their boats for the long winter months. Activi• ties at the club for the rest of the year will be minimal — those being the Elec• tion of Officers, October 28th, a Fall Dinner Party & Dancing, November 6th, and the Winners Dinner, December 4th. Lowell Marks, club entertainment chairman claims the November Party to be the biggest and best ever. He is also planning some activities at the club for New Year's Eve. The club will be closed on Mondays during the winter months. However, the bar room will be open Tues• day thru Sunday and a Fish Fry will be served every Friday. Be sure to join fellow yachtsmen at the club during the quiet months, there are always plenty of stories of summer cruises and past races to warm the winter nights. CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS Any change to the Sailing Instructions (SIs) will be posted before 0930 on the day it will take effect. 2. COMMUNICATIONS WITH COMPETITORS 2.1 Notices to competitors will be posted on the Official Notice Board which is the King of Spain Regatta webpage. 2.2 On the water, the Race Committee (RC) intends to monitor and communicate with competitors on VHF radio channel 68. Failure of the RC to broadcast, mistaken broadcasts, or failure of a competitor to receive this information will not be grounds for a request for redress. This change is added to RRS 62.1(a). 3. SIGNALS MADE ASHORE 3.1 Signals made ashore will be displayed on the flagpole located on the CYC front lawn. 3.2 When flag AP is displayed ashore, “1 minute” is replaced with “not less than sixty (60) minutes” in RRS Race Signals AP. 4. SCHEDULE OF RACES 4.1 Seven (7) races are scheduled: four (4) on Saturday and three (3) on Sunday. The RC, at its discretion, may run fewer races. 4.2 The scheduled time of the first warning signal each day is 1230. Subsequent races will start as soon as practicable.

    97th ANNUAL REGATTA and Shields Class New England Championship Shields, J/70, Rhodes 19, Herreshoff 12 1/2 July 16-18, 2020 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS 1 RULES 1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS). 1.2 Boats will be subject to the Shields, J/70, Rhodes 19 (R19), and Herreshoff 12 ½ (H12) class rules. 1.3 The maximum crew size for all classes will be three, to be in compliance with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Phase III, Step 1 Reopening standards for businesses and other entities providing youth and adult amateur sports activities, dated 6 July, 2020. 2 NOTICES TO COMPETITORS 2.1 Notices to competitors will be posted electronically on the Official Notice Board located on the EYC Regatta website at: https://www.edgartownyc.org/club/scripts/library/view_document.asp?NS=PR&G RP=40009&DN=ANNUAL 2.2 A skippers’ meeting will be held on Zoom at 1700, Wednesday, July 15, 2020.
