And why are they important? What’s the difference between Arthropods and Insects? Most of this guide is comprised of insects. These are animals that have three body segments- head, thorax, and abdomen, three pairs of legs, and usually have wings, although there are several wingless forms of insects. Insects are of the Class Insecta and they make up the largest class of the phylum called Arthropoda (arthropods). However, the phylum Arthopoda includes other groups as well including Crustacea (crabs, lobsters, shrimps, barnacles, etc.), Myriapoda (millipedes, centipedes, etc.) and Arachnida (scorpions, king crabs, spiders, mites, ticks, etc.). Arthropods including insects and all other animals in this phylum are characterized as animals with a tough outer exoskeleton or body-shell and flexible jointed limbs that allow the animal to move. Although this guide is comprised mostly of insects, some members of the Myriapoda and Arachnida can also be found here. Remember they are all arthropods but only some of them are true ‘insects’. Entomologist - A scientist who focuses on the study of insects! What’s bugging entomologists? Although we tend to call all insects ‘bugs’ according to entomology a ‘true bug’ must be of the Order Hemiptera. So what exactly makes an insect a bug? Insects in the order Hemiptera have sucking, beak-like mouthparts, which are tucked under their “chin” when Metallic Green Bee (Agapostemon sp.) not in use. -

New information In the present paper, based on an examination of museum specimens, published records and new samples, a comprehensive and critical species list of Crambidae moths (Lepidoptera: Pyraloidea) is synthesised. In total, 8 subfamilies, 50 genera and 106 species have been recorded and these are listed along with their collection, literature references and biological data including chorotype, voltinism and the flight period in the study area. The utility of the equations is tested by analysing faeces from a reptile species Tarentola rnauritanica. The application of these equations greatly increases the number of prey for which body length and biomass is estimated. Consequently, the application of regression equations is encouraged for diet studies, although it is also advisable either to previously test the applicability of published equations or to develop new equations if necessary. Some of the scientific names he's invented . Well, . Did he do those things on purpose? The roseate spoonbill, Ajaia ajaja, did not get its name from a cat pawing a keyboard. A 1648 report of the bird in Brazil gave the Tupi people's name for it as ajaja, and the later binomial system essentially doubled it. PhotoDisc Most of the time, Evenhuis comes across as an eminent, sane scientist. He's spent years mapping out the family trees and describing new species of flies, and he's published such landmark works as a catalog of 5,100 fossil species. He's officially named more than 300 kinds of flies, and most of the terms sound respectably unintelligible to the uninitiated. Several hours before fielding the phone call about his intentions, Evenhuis heard that he had been elected to the international commission overseeing scientific names for all of zoology. So, what did the accomplished taxonomist have in mind when he chose Dissop as the name for a genus of a hard-to-see fossil with the species name irae? Disap-pear-ee? And what about the genus called Iyaiyai, as in the lamenting trills of a mariachi song or the cry that goes with thumping a hand against one's forehead? Evenhuis has committed other merriments, too, and, yes, he says he intended all of them. -

It was discov- ered mining the fronds of the fern Elaphoglossum conspersum in Costa Rica (San José and Cartago Provinces, at elevations of 2300-3100 m). The type series was obtained by rearing of the immature stages in laboratory. The adult is defined by unique genital characters, and the pupa with a medial depression on the vertex and with two anterolateral horn-like structures on the prothorax. The larva is a gregarious leaf miner with its body flat- tened dorsoventrally and head prognathous; morphological adaptations to its leaf-mining habit are new to the Musotiminae. Shetlar - Advisor Dr. Steve Passoa Dr. Andy Michel Dr. Dave Gardiner Copyright by Devon Ashley Rogers 2014 Abstract A review of the North American Crambinae sod webworm taxonomy, phylogenetic history, and biology is presented. Traditional analysis, combined with modern genetic analysis has changed and solidified the placement of these species. Previously cryptic and unidentifiable larvae were identified using genetic analysis of the mitochondrial CO1 gene and an evaluation of potential host plant associations is given. DNA sequencing is a useful tool that can be used to identify unknown sod webworm larvae, including the especially difficult to identify first and second instar larvae. Only Parapediasia teterrella larvae were recovered from the short-cut, golf course-type, creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera), as was a single Agriphila ruricolella. Fissicrambus mutabilis was obtained from lawn-height Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) and turf type tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea). Sod webworm adults were monitored with a standard blacklight trap between 2009 and 2013. Each year 14 species were recovered from the light trap. Species obtained from the managed turfgrass yielded only a fraction of the number of species attracted to the light trap. The sod webworm species Euchromius ocellus first appeared in late 2012. This is a first report for this species in Ohio. -

Keep in mind that they should be simple, clear line drawings, and it would be very helpful if they were in the appropriate size to fit although I can reduce large figures. Scientific Notes ZETA ARGILLACEUM ON THE MOVE -- by Lionel Stange (Florida State Dept. of Agriculture. Gainesville. Fla. 32601) . Menke & Stange (1986, Fla. Ent. 69:697) give the first records of Zeta argillaceum (Linnaeus) for Florida (Dade Co.). The earliest record was from Miami, July, 1975. A recent collecting trip to the Florida Keys made by Charles Porter and I tumed up three new records. One male Zeta was taken at Tavemier, Key Largo, on January 8, 1987. Another male was taken in the Lower Keys at the Botanical Garden on Stock Island. Four males and three females were taken on Key West behind the airport.
