THE DICTIONARYOFENTOMOLOGY. Original text Copyright © 1914 Nigel K. Jardine probably expired. Ihav e made manyattempts to determine the copyright status of the orginal work. In 1914 in England, copyright extended for the life of the author, plus fify years. Ihav e attempted to obtain biographical material for N. K. Jardine without success, nor have I been able to locate an obituary for him, and so without knowing the year of his death it is not possible to determine when the copyright of the original work expired. When I consulted a firm of copyright lawyers, theytoo were unable to determine theyyear the copyright expired. Their advice was that the copyright of the original work has most probably expired. If anyreader has more acurate information about N. K. Jardine or the copyright status of the original work, I would appreciate receiving it at the address below. • Map 86 Paphlagonia Compiled by C
Map 86 Paphlagonia Compiled by C. Foss, 1995 Introduction The map comprises ancient Paphlagonia, and extends into eastern Bithynia and the northernmost part of Galatia. Evidence for the ancient topography is most abundant on the coast, along the Roman roads, and in Galatia. Arrian’s Periplus Ponti Euxini (written c. A.D. 132), together with an earlier text by Menippus (c. 20 B.C.) and a related Late Antique anonymous work, describe the coast in great detail. Most of the sites named in these works can be located at least approximately, although a few resist identification; Müller’s commentary in GGM I remains valuable. For the Roman roads, ItMiller is uncritical; French (1981) is far more useful, but treats only one major road. The roads of Paphlagonia are presented in admirable detail by TIB Paphlagonien, those of northern Galatia likewise by TIB Galatien. The interior of Paphlagonia is a remote, mountainous country, cut off from the regions to the south by long, parallel ranges. Communication east and west is relatively easy; north and south, it is much more difficult. The country contains a few long, wide plains and river valleys, some of considerable fertility. In antiquity, the mountains were heavily forested. For the most part, the region was never densely populated. For a general description, see Leonhard (1915); and for an excellent account of some areas (including eastern Bithynia), with discussion of specific problems, note Robert (1980). RE Paphlagonia gives a full list of all named sites (cols. 2537-50) and of physical remains (2498-2510, 2515). Some features listed there do not appear on the map because of limited significance or uncertainty of dating.

Princeton/Stanford Working Papers in Classics Framing Portraits and Persons: the Small Herculaneum Woman statue type and the construction of identity Version 1.0 May 2013 Jennifer Trimble Stanford University Abstract: This paper explores the framing of portraits of women in the second century CE through three examples of the so-called Small Herculaneum Woman statue type. Relevant juxtapositions include head and body, image and text, sculpture and setting, singularity and replication. Over the long histories of these portraits, their viewing frames have also changed drastically, reshaped by re-use, spoliage, damage or abandonment, colonialist archaeologies, and museum practices that now privilege a very modern, contemplative viewing of “art”. © Jennifer Trimble. [email protected] Framing Portraits and Persons: the Small Herculaneum Woman statue type and the construction of identity1 Jennifer Trimble Written for Verity Platt and Michael Squire, eds. Framing the Visual in Greek and Roman Art (forthcoming). Roman portraiture is famously veristic. Its sculpted faces depict wrinkles, lines, bumpy noses, compressed lips and other idiosyncratic features, creating a vivid impression of individual physiognomies and characters. However, this impression is constructed by the anachronistic frames through which we look at Roman portraits. Modern accidents of discovery and collection mean Roman portrait heads are often presented alone, without the bodies to which most were originally attached. They are displayed in the contemplative, analytical setting of a museum gallery, or in detailed, closeup photographs viewed in a university class, textbook or research library. These modern frames and viewing technologies produce an individualism and identity far removed from the portraits’ ancient settings, contexts and effects.

Epigraphie Bulletin for Greek Religion 1997 (EBGR 1997) The eleventh issue of the BBGR deals primarily with the epigraphic harvest of 1997. Although my long time collaborator Eftychia Stavrianopoulou has been unable to contribute lemmata this year due to other responsibilities, we have been able to cover the majority of the publications of 1997 and to close many of the gaps left in previous issues; thus, this bulletin is the longest so far. We have been focusing on riew epigraphic finds, new interpretations of inscriptions, and epigraphical corpora, but we have also summarized sorne of the religious studies which are based primarily on the epigraphic material; we have also included sorne articles which present or discuss important papyrological sources. Next year, we hope with the help of E. Stavrianopoulou not only to include more addenda to earlier issues, but also to reduce the chronological gap between the publication of a book or an article and its presentation in this bulletin.
