  • Crowbar Symmetry in Black ENG
“Symmetry In Black” CD • LP • Digital Download European Release Date: Ma y 26 th , 2014 Hope ya’ love it slow, hard and heavy, because the rebirth of CROWBAR is upon us. Make no mistake: the massively influential merchants of sludge never went away. But as the band’s 25 th year of existence dawns and their tenth full length album is unleashed upon the world, cofounder, frontman and riff- making warhorse Kirk Windstein is determined to give the band he unapologetically calls his “baby” the total dedication it demands. The unrestrained push and relentless concentration surrounding Symmetry in Black is music to the ears - figuratively and literally – for new adherents and the legion of underground fans and fellow musicians who swore allegiance to Crowbar long ago. Symmetry in Black is the perfect album to arrive in the number ten slot of the Crowbar catalog, a penultimate achievement embodying the early sloth of doom touchstone Obedience Thru Suffering (1991), the moody dissonance of modern classic Odd Fellows Rest (1998) and the crisp thunder of the album’s predecessor, Sever the Wicked Hand (2011), with nuggets of Crowbar’s storied history sprinkled throughout. The crushing signature sound of Crowbar is at its peak on Symmetry in Black , the band’s most diverse yet cohesive release. It was coproduced with fellow New Orleans resident Duane Simoneaux, who worked on Sever the Wicked Hand and mixed by Josh Wilbur, whose diverse credits include work with Lamb Of God, Gojira and Killer Be Killed. “We needed to move our sound forward but at the same time, make sure everything stayed 100% true to who and what we are,” Windstein explains.

Music Our totally awesome music subbies and contributors have been working hard over the semester break to bring you the latest and greatest in music. We’ve got the goss on Splendour, reviews and interviews. So read on tune- loving friends, read on... Sparkadia You have probably heard of Sparkadia. A couple of months ago their debut album Postcards was featured on Triple J. They also recently completed a run of national dates stopping off in Adelaide to play a show with Perth’s the Dirty Secrets at Jive. At the moment they are probably still overseas having just played Glastonbury and T in the Park not to mention several other high profile festivals. I asked Alex, vocalist/guitarist, and Dave, drummer, how they felt about their recent run of good fortune. “It’s pretty sweet”, Dave confides. Of course it wasn’t always like this. “It’s been a real long hard slog and the combination of ‘a lot of luck and a lot of hard work’,” Alex tells me. The guys then explain how they spent nineteen hours in a tour van with The Cops to get to a show in Sydney, having just played in Adelaide. Inevitably, I got onto the subject of Sparkadia’s early days. Alex and Dave were school mates who only bonded over a love of Metallica and ‘Maiden. I gasped in the realisation that I had finally discovered One of the groups defining moments occurred at Splendour in the some like minded heavy metal fans. We spent a little time discussing Grass in 2003.

Présentation de l'éditeurMy Bloody Roots is the brutally honest story of life in two of the world’s best-known heavy metal bands, Sepultura and Soulfly, by one of the global metal scene’s most respected musicians.Much, much more than just another tale of rock’n’roll debauchery, it’s a story of heartbreak and loss—and, ultimately, triumph. In it, Cavalera offers an unflinching account of life growing up in hardship in Brazil—a country not previously known for heavy metal—and the multi-million-selling success, against all odds, of the band he founded with his brother, Iggor: Sepultura. Then, for the first time, he reveals the full story behind his split with the band—after which he did not speak to his brother for years—and the formation of his Soulfly, one of the most critically and commercially successful metal bands of the past two decades.

  • The Mars Volta and the Symbolic Boundaries of Progressive Rock
GENRE AND/AS DISTINCTION: THE MARS VOLTA AND THE SYMBOLIC BOUNDARIES OF PROGRESSIVE ROCK R. Justin Frankeny A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Musicology in the School of Music. Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Aaron Harcus Michael A. Figueroa David F. Garcia © 2020 R. Justin Frankeny ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT R. Justin Frankeny: Genre and/as Distinction: The Mars Volta and the Symbolic Boundaries of Progressive Rock (Under the direction of Dr. Aaron Harcus) In the early 2000’s, The Mars Volta’s popularity among prog(ressive) rock fandom was, in many ways, a conundrum. Unlike 1970s prog rock that drew heavily on Western classical music, TMV members Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala routinely insisted on the integral importance of salsa music to their style and asserted an ambivalent relationship to classic prog rock. This thesis builds on existing scholarship on cultural omnivorousness to assert that an increase in omnivorous musical tastes since prog rock’s inception in the 1970s not only explains The Mars Volta’s affiliation with the genre in the early 2000s, but also explains their mixed reception within a divided prog rock fanbase. Contrary to existing scholarship that suggests that the omnivore had largely supplanted the highbrow snob, this study suggests that the snob persisted in the prog rock fanbase during progressive rock’s resurgence (ca. 1997-2012), as distinguished by their assertion of the superiority of prog rock through discourses of musical complexity adapted from classical music.

  • The Discursive Construction of Ideal Heavy Metal
1 Vulgar Discourses of Power: The Discursive Construction of Ideal Heavy Metal Subjectivity and the Erasure of Black, Indigenous, and Women of Colour in Heavy Metal Music Culture By Michelle Bona A Thesis Submitted to Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Women and Gender Studies April 2021, Halifax, Nova Scotia Copyright Michelle Bona, 2021 Approved: Dr. Tatjana Takševa Supervisor Approved: Dr. Jacqueline Warwick Examiner Approved: Dr. Tracy Moniz Reader Date: 23 April 2021 2 Abstract Vulgar Discourses of Power: The Discursive Construction of Ideal Heavy Metal Subjectivity and the Erasure of Black, Indigenous, and Women of Colour in Heavy Metal Music Culture By Michelle Bona Heavy metal music culture has been a bastion of working-class white masculinity since its beginnings in the early 1970s. Through canonization and Historical documentation, white male dominance has been ensured, obscuring contributions made by white female performers and erasing black, Indigenous, and women of colour (BIWoC) from the genre. Utilizing feminist critical discourse analysis (feminist CDA) to examine texts by canonized male bands reveals the discursive parameters of ideal heavy metal subjectivity (IHMS). Exploration of texts created by white female performers, including a case study of Arch Enemy vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, isolates the necessity for white female performers to reproduce the discourses of IHMS in order to secure their participation in the culture, further contributing to the erasure of BIWoC performers. However, feminist CDA also reveals transformative potential within these texts to de-centre IHMS as the default subject position and shows white women’s agency and resiliency as performers.

  • ROADRUNNER Wird 30! XXX: Three Decades of Roadrunner Records Bringt Modernen Metal Auf Den Punkt

  • Cavalera Conspiracy (BR) Genre: Groove / Thrash Metal Label: Napalm Records Album Titel: Pandemonium Spielzeit: 51:10 VÖ: 31.10.2014
Band: Cavalera Conspiracy (BR) Genre: Groove / Thrash Metal Label: Napalm Records Album Titel: Pandemonium Spielzeit: 51:10 VÖ: 31.10.2014 Die konspirative Brüder-Wiedervereinigung geht in die dritte Runde.
