Das 4-CD-Boxset XXX: THREE DECADES OF ROADRUNNER RECORDS präsentiert 54 Tracks von dutzenden Bands, die es zu Kultstatus in der Szene gebracht haben. Viele von den Bands haben schon lange den Sprung in den Metal-Mainstream geschafft und dürften auch dem Uneingeweihten bekannt sein, etwa Soulfly, Megadeth, Nickelback, Dream Theater und Korn. Aber es gibt auch Klassiker zu bewundern, etwa Rush und Lynyrd Skynyrd, und avantgardistische Indie-Bands wie Dresden Dolls. Ein großartiges Portfolio eines Labels, bei dem nur ein Kriterium zählt: Es muss rocken. Das Box-Set, das am 27. XXX: THREE DECADES OF ROADRUNNER RECORDS bietet auf vier sorgfältig zusammengestellten Discs einen perfekten Überblick über die erstaunlichen ersten drei Dekaden von Roadrunner. Disc Nummer 1, „Foundations“, beleuchtet die ersten Jahre, in denen das Label mit ultraharten Bands wie Mercyful Fate, Carnivore, Deicide, Brujeria, Suffocation, Biohazard, Type-O-Negative und anderen zu Kultstatus gelangte. Der Grundstock des Roadrunner-Repertoires deckte die großen Spielarten des harten Spätachtziger-Rock ab: Death-, Industrial- und Gothic-Metal trafen auf Hardcore und Alternative. Die zweite Disc, „Horns Up“, bringt Roadrunners immensen Einfluss auf den Metal der 90er Jahre auf den Punkt, in denen Slipknot, Machine Head, Sepultura, Coal Chamber, Fear Factory und viele weitere Bands das Sagen hatten. Die 90er Jahre waren das Metalzeitalter des Nu-Metal, Thrash-Metal und Alternative-Metal, und Roadrunner vertrat Bands aus allen Szenen und Subszenen, die seinerzeit wie Pilze aus dem Boden schossen. Disc Nummer 3, „And Metal For All“, führt den Hörer mit Killswitch Engage, Trivium, Dream Theater, Opeth und Gojira sowie einem Track vom Roadrunner United-Allstar-Album von 2005 in die 2000er Jahre. Dies ist durch und durch Metal in all seinen Facetten. Die vierte Disc, „Rock For The Ages“ präsentiert das Hard-Rock-Kontingent des Labels mit Tracks von Rush, Nickelback, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Theory Of A Deadman, Airbourne, Black Stone Cherry, Korn feat. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

    WHO'S WHO AT ROADRUNNER RECORDS After 17 years with Phonogram Int'l. in international A&R, Gees Wessels joined RCA as Managing Director of the Dutch com- pany. In 1981 Gees left to establish Roadrunner Records in Amsterdam. The label began by specializing in UK-Punk Music and then heavy metal. One of the company's first signings was a group called Merciful Fate, which later became King Diamond. Gradually, through licensing UK heavy metal product, Roadrunner became one of the premiere distributors of that type of music throughout Europe. In 1986 the company opened offices in the U.S. and a year later in the U.K.. They are currently in the process of opening an office in Cologne, W.Germany as we go to print. In the U.S., Roadrunner has established four different labels: ROADRACER - specilizing in Metal and distributed through MCA, the company is presently 'New On The Charts' with the King Diamond LP "Them". EMERGO - a Progressive Rock label distributed by MCA. HAWKER - Hard Core Rock independently distributed. RC RECORDS - Heavy Metal independently distributed. Lusty University of Nevada, Las Vegas While metalheads around the world embrace the engaging storylines of their favorite songs, the influence of canonical literature on heavy metal musicians does not appear to have garnered much interest from the academic world. This essay considers a wide swath of canonical literature from the Bible through the Science Fiction/Fantasy trend of the 1960s and 70s and presents examples of ways in which musicians adapt historical events, myths, religious themes, and epics into their own contemporary art. I have constructed artificial categories under which to place various songs and albums, but many fit into (and may appear in) multiple categories. A few bands who heavily indulge in literary sources, like Rush and Styx, don’t quite make my own “heavy metal” category. Some bands that sit 101 Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 on the edge of rock/metal, like Scorpions and Buckcherry, do. Other examples, like Megadeth’s “Of Mice and Men,” Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and Cradle of Filth’s “Nymphetamine” won’t feature at all, as the thematic inspiration is clear, but the textual connections tenuous.1 The categories constructed here are necessarily wide, but they allow for flexibility with the variety of approaches to literature and form. A segment devoted to the Bible as a source text has many pockets of variation not considered here (country music, Christian rock, Christian metal).

Por mi parte, debo decir que me encantó la propuesta del grupo del vocalista y guitarrista Matt Heafy, porque ella me retrotrae a la época dorada del thrash metal, estilo surgido en el decenio del 80 en la corrosiva y maravillosa ciudad de San Francisco, sitio de suma importancia para la historia del rock y del metal. Publicado por el sello Roadrunner Records, el CD contiene 11 piezas a través de las cuales apreciamos una muy llamativa mezcla entre elementos de Thrash Metal y componentes del metalcore, lo cual le confiere al fonograma una sonoridad bien moderna y en la que se consigue la unión entre llamativas líneas melódicas y el sentido oscuro característico de las tendencias extremas del metal. Según mi parecer, he ahí la clave de un material como The sin and the sentence, resultado también de los buenos oficios del productor Josh Wilbur. Para ese nuevo disco, la alineación de Trivium la conforman el ya aludido Matt Heafy como figura frontal de la agrupación, Corey Beaulieu en los trabajos vocales y como integrante de la mancuerna de guitarras el bajista Paolo Gregoletto y una nueva adquisición, Alex Bent en la batería.

Complètement novateur dans un style Black Metal gothique, théâtral et symphonique, le groupe anglais a sorti selon moi deux albums vraiment incontournables : Dusk… And Her Embrace (1996) et Cruelty And The Beast (1998), mon préféré. Les années 2000, même si marquées par des disques très recommandables (Midian, Nymphetamine,…) correspondent à un lent déclin, laissant le trône dans le style Black Metal symphonique à leurs principaux rivaux, les Norvégiens de DIMMU BORGIR qui ont littéralement explosé à cette même période. On peut expliquer cette baisse de popularité certaine par trois facteurs : - le manque flagrant de renouvellement de la musique de CRADLE OF FILTH, s’épuisant dans des concept albums fastidieux manquant d’originalité. - le fait que Dani FILTH n’a jamais su s’entourer d’un line-up stable, hormis son fidèle lieutenant Paul ALLENDER à la guitare, ne bénéficiant donc pas de force créatrice supplémentaire et restant ainsi plus un projet solo qu’un véritable groupe soudé. - des prestations live de qualité inégale. Leur musique studio se trouvant difficile à reproduire fidèlement en concert, le son s'avère souvent aléatoire… Que peut on donc espérer de The Manticore And Other Horros ? Tuons le suspens, c’est un bon album mais je ne parlerai pas de chef d’œuvre.
