CRADLE of FILTH the Manticore and Other Horrors (Melodic Extrem Metal) CRADLE OF FILTH The manticore and other horrors (Melodic Extrem Metal) Année de sortie : 2012 Nombre de pistes : 11 Durée : 52' Support : CD promo Provenance : Reçu du label Il est évident qu’en 2012 CRADLE OF FILTH n’a malheureusement plus la même aura que dans la deuxième moitié des années 90. Complètement novateur dans un style Black Metal gothique, théâtral et symphonique, le groupe anglais a sorti selon moi deux albums vraiment incontournables : Dusk… And Her Embrace (1996) et Cruelty And The Beast (1998), mon préféré. Les années 2000, même si marquées par des disques très recommandables (Midian, Nymphetamine,…) correspondent à un lent déclin, laissant le trône dans le style Black Metal symphonique à leurs principaux rivaux, les Norvégiens de DIMMU BORGIR qui ont littéralement explosé à cette même période. On peut expliquer cette baisse de popularité certaine par trois facteurs : - le manque flagrant de renouvellement de la musique de CRADLE OF FILTH, s’épuisant dans des concept albums fastidieux manquant d’originalité. - le fait que Dani FILTH n’a jamais su s’entourer d’un line-up stable, hormis son fidèle lieutenant Paul ALLENDER à la guitare, ne bénéficiant donc pas de force créatrice supplémentaire et restant ainsi plus un projet solo qu’un véritable groupe soudé. - des prestations live de qualité inégale. Leur musique studio se trouvant difficile à reproduire fidèlement en concert, le son s'avère souvent aléatoire… Que peut on donc espérer de The Manticore And Other Horros ? Tuons le suspens, c’est un bon album mais je ne parlerai pas de chef d’œuvre. Fini les concepts ambitieux, CRADLE OF FILTH veut revenir à l’essentiel avec des chansons variées ayant chacune leur identité. La belle intro symphonique prépare à l’écoute de The Abhorrent, un titre très classique de C.O.F. avec ses cassures multiples, une alternance toujours maîtrisée chant grave chant aigu et ses orchestrations soignées. Je suis ici en terrain connu, Illicitus s’inscrit dans cette lignée. Parfois, le groupe développe une approche épurée, mettant les claviers en retrait, avec un riff de guitare puissant, direct, limite punk (For Your Vulgar Delectation et Siding With The Titans). J’aime le départ technoïde de Huge Onyx Wings Behind Despair et son rythme effréné et ses diverses variations. Pallid Reflection s’articule autour d’une guitare très agressive pour un résultat réussi. Enfin, l’instrumental Sinfonia vient clôturer l’album avec un piano classique et une ambiance inquiétante. Je trouve que Dani a perdu de sa puissance vocale. Par exemple, il éprouve vraiment de la peine sur certains aigus de Manticore, les belles sonorités orientales parviennent malgré tout à sauver le morceau. Plusieurs écoutes s'avèrent nécessaires afin de saisir toutes les subtilités de cette oeuvre (voix fantomatiques, choeurs travaillés, sonorités symphoniques recherchées). Rien à dire sur la qualité du son, la production reste de qualité. Lusty University of Nevada, Las Vegas While metalheads around the world embrace the engaging storylines of their favorite songs, the influence of canonical literature on heavy metal musicians does not appear to have garnered much interest from the academic world. This essay considers a wide swath of canonical literature from the Bible through the Science Fiction/Fantasy trend of the 1960s and 70s and presents examples of ways in which musicians adapt historical events, myths, religious themes, and epics into their own contemporary art. I have constructed artificial categories under which to place various songs and albums, but many fit into (and may appear in) multiple categories. A few bands who heavily indulge in literary sources, like Rush and Styx, don’t quite make my own “heavy metal” category. Some bands that sit 101 Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 on the edge of rock/metal, like Scorpions and Buckcherry, do. Other examples, like Megadeth’s “Of Mice and Men,” Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and Cradle of Filth’s “Nymphetamine” won’t feature at all, as the thematic inspiration is clear, but the textual connections tenuous.1 The categories constructed here are necessarily wide, but they allow for flexibility with the variety of approaches to literature and form. A segment devoted to the Bible as a source text has many pockets of variation not considered here (country music, Christian rock, Christian metal).

    Lindsay Schoolcraft interviewed by Animal English Version: I've been listening to Cradle of Filth for years and years, a classic in its genre, everyone knows that. I've learned to growl and play the keyboard to their songs, searching for harmony by ear and up to now the albums they've released are on my phone's playlist what the people whose skins I tattoo can easily confirm, since I often have to explain why „he's screaming like that”. And no, I can't turn down the volume, listen, you don't have this at home. They usually calm down right after the entry of the female, classical vocals, which fantastically underscores a section's brutality, the sharp guitar riffs and „Jesus being raped” screams, as one of my tattooist colleagues called it, regularly forced to familiarize himself with this band when he shared a tattooing space with me. My musical fascinations, especially the vocal ones, eventually become drawings and paintings, so one night I sketched Dani, posted it on Instagram with the appropriate hashtags and some time later was very surprised to see a like and comment under the picture from Lindsay Schoolcraft, the new vocalist and person responsible for keyboards in Cradle of Filth. We talked for a while and when it turned out that the beautiful, talented and, most of all, humble Lindz confirms the online stereotype of a Candian citizen (meaning: super-nice; that's right, it appears all the memes are true:) ) I also drew her. The purpose is to analyze whether there is a certain aesthetic embracing of risk and innovation on display when discussing such subject matters, and to relate such aesthetic connotations to cultural and religious aspects. Lyrical interpretations of evil in a musical context appear to be existent in different forms and are in various ways attempts to integrate the existence of evil acts, as leading to suffering and pain, by incorporating such themes into lyrical material. There appears to be a possible aesthetic embraced when artists are advocating evil acts, however, not totally separable from the aesthetics of the extreme metal scene. Such forms of creative practice appear as reliant on the dialectic between historical perceptions of morality, modern society as globalized, segmented and restructured and the reoccurrence of religion in a secularized perspective. Themes regarding evil appear in this form of aesthetic in different ways to traditional discourse; making use of historical and contemporary images of evil and portraying them as desirable in various ways. In some instances such creative release is also linked to religious belief and practice, making the artistic performance equivalent of a transcendental event.
