He has to his name: fourteen novels translated into English, four collections of short stories (and a good handful of short stories which have not been anthologized), and over forty works of nonfiction, including translations of works into Japanese. His first two novels, Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973, which he wrote basically because he thought he could, are stylistically realist and best characterized by weltschmerz, which in English means angsty world-weariness, a la J.D.

  • The Bone Clocks, Climate Change, and Human Attention
humanities Article Seeing What’s Right in Front of Us: The Bone Clocks, Climate Change, and Human Attention Elizabeth Callaway Environmental Humanities Program, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT 84112, USA; [email protected] Received: 1 November 2017; Accepted: 18 January 2018; Published: 26 January 2018 Abstract: The scales on which climate change acts make it notoriously difficult to represent in artistic and cultural works. By modeling the encounter with climate as one characterized by distraction, David Mitchell’s novel The Bone Clocks proposes that the difficulty in portraying climate change arises not from displaced effects and protracted timescales but a failure of attention. The book both describes and enacts the way more traditionally dramatic stories distract from climate connections right in front of our eyes, revealing, in the end, that the real story was climate all along. Keywords: climate change; clifi; digital humanities; literature and the environment Climate change is notoriously difficult to render in artistic and literary works. In the environmental humanities, there is an entire critical conversation around how and whether climate change can be represented in current cultural forms. The challenges often enumerated include the large time scales on which climate operates (Nixon 2011, p. 3), the displacement of climate effects (p. 2) literary plausibility of including extreme events in fiction (Ghosh 2016, p. 9), and the abstract nature of both the concept of climate (Taylor 2013, p. 1) and the idea of collective human action on the planetary scale (Chakrabarty 2009, p. 214). In this article, I argue that David Mitchell’s novel The Bone Clocks proposes a different primary difficulty in representing climate change.

“ I think that my job is to observe people and the world, and not to judge them. I always hope to position myself away from so-called conclusions. I would like to leave everything wide open to all the possibilities in the world. ---HARUKI MURAKAMI ” BIOGRAPHY Murakami Haruki is a world-famous Japanese writer whose works have been translated into 50 languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide. He only began writing at the age of 29 with no intention to be an author, yet his books and short stories have been best sellers in Japan and many other countries. He is one of the most well-known Japanese writers in the world, but his works are ironically criticized for being “un-Japanese.” Even Murakami himself once said he is “an outcast of the Japanese literary world”. Themes Because of the presence of western music and literature in his early life, Murakami Haruki emulated favorite writers such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Raymond Chandler, Raymond Carver, and Franz Kafka, implementing their writing styles in his depiction of Japanese society. This unique combination is what makes Murakami Haruki so distinct, and also, what makes him renowned worldwide. --- Janice Yutong Cai Murakami and Music Imagine nestling into a couch with Janacek Sinfonietta playing in the background, while reading 1Q84. Aomame is unknowingly climbing the fence to the other world and the feelings of excitement and adrenaline are pumping in her veins. And just as she reaches the other side, the violins crescendo through the E-flat minor scale, subtly alluding to the setting of mysterious uncharted territories and questionable decisions of strange characters.

  • Crowbar Symmetry in Black ENG
“Symmetry In Black” CD • LP • Digital Download European Release Date: Ma y 26 th , 2014 Hope ya’ love it slow, hard and heavy, because the rebirth of CROWBAR is upon us. Make no mistake: the massively influential merchants of sludge never went away. But as the band’s 25 th year of existence dawns and their tenth full length album is unleashed upon the world, cofounder, frontman and riff- making warhorse Kirk Windstein is determined to give the band he unapologetically calls his “baby” the total dedication it demands. The unrestrained push and relentless concentration surrounding Symmetry in Black is music to the ears - figuratively and literally – for new adherents and the legion of underground fans and fellow musicians who swore allegiance to Crowbar long ago. Symmetry in Black is the perfect album to arrive in the number ten slot of the Crowbar catalog, a penultimate achievement embodying the early sloth of doom touchstone Obedience Thru Suffering (1991), the moody dissonance of modern classic Odd Fellows Rest (1998) and the crisp thunder of the album’s predecessor, Sever the Wicked Hand (2011), with nuggets of Crowbar’s storied history sprinkled throughout. The crushing signature sound of Crowbar is at its peak on Symmetry in Black , the band’s most diverse yet cohesive release. It was coproduced with fellow New Orleans resident Duane Simoneaux, who worked on Sever the Wicked Hand and mixed by Josh Wilbur, whose diverse credits include work with Lamb Of God, Gojira and Killer Be Killed. “We needed to move our sound forward but at the same time, make sure everything stayed 100% true to who and what we are,” Windstein explains.
