JON STRONG AT TOFT HOUSE, MIDDLESBROUGH

Jon Strong, known for his bittersweet and mordant wit, returns to Toft House in Middlesbrough this February. Known as “The Home of Unpopular Music”, as promoter Leigh Sayers puts it, the venue will bring Jon and his band back to the Linthorpe venue by, ironically, popular demand. Jon and his band have been there, done it, travelled Europe, mixed with the best, toured with the likes of Ry Cooder, Van Morrison and Robert Palmer and have many hilarious tales to tell. Jon is a phenomenally good guitar player, with blues and R&B mixed in with influences from the English folk scene. He is a stickler for achieving a quality sonic experience for his audience and his guitar-mastery produces a unique booming and ringing three-handed style. WAGE WAR AT THINK TANK?, NEWCASTLE

Kicking up a storm on the Metalcore scene following the release of third studio album, ‘Pressure’, Florida-formed Wage War are serving up more of their endlessly edgy mix of Briton Bond Screamo, clean cut vocals of Cody Quistad and addictively heavy drumming. Previous releases such as ‘Stitch’ have inspired local bands like Perceptions with spine-tingling heavy drops - and the latest delivery is a ready-made mosh pit. Standout tracks ‘Grave’, ‘Fury’ and ‘The Line’ feel like a heavier ode to early Linkin Park with melodies that inspire a scream- along whilst numbers like ‘Low’ create emo-thrills undercut by THE LAKE POETS Bond’s heavy vocals. A roaring mix of face-melting drum and guitar solos that frankly shred, Wage War are a crowd-rousing, AT THE PEACOCK, SUNDERLAND powerful outfit establishing themselves as leaders of the pack when it comes to Metalcore. Martin Longstaff, the man behind The Lake Poets, has now become a household name throughout Sunderland and his music has spread not just through the North East, but also across the country too. It’s not all down to the ‘Sunderland Till I Die’ documentary though as Longstaff’s success comes from this ability to write and play incredibly infectious and powerful songs. Crediting his influences as Carole King, Van Morrison, Damien Rice and Neil Young, to name a few, Longstaff’s music is beautiful and meaningful all at once. Now, The Lake Poets will be playing Sunderland’s The Peacock on Saturday 21st December, a SKINNER AND T’WITCH venue that has recently been taken over by North East artists Barry Hyde and Dan Donnelly. CULTURE SPOTLIGHT DEC 2019 / JAN 2020 GATESHEAD SILENT FILM FESTIVAL

If you know your Harold Lloyd from your Buster Keaton or if you are totally new to the world of pre-‘talky’ cinema, there’s bound to be something for everyone as Gateshead Silent Film Festival returns this January, presented by Side By Side Arts. To give people a genuine experience of the golden age of pre-audio cinema, the festival features showings accompanied by live piano playing - just as the films would have been shown in cinemas around one hundred years ago. The festival’s showings take place in the St. Mary’s Heritage Centre, a converted church in the shadow of the Tyne Bridge, providing an atmospheric and unusual surrounding for cinema-goers. The festival begins with Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde on Friday 31st January, a movie that was made in 1920 and could be considered one of the first horror films. Although the technology was in its infancy, the use of make-up and the considerable acting skills and facial contortions of John Barrymore provide a visual feast in the transformation from Dr Jekyll to his demonic alter-ego, Mr Hyde. With a supporting performance by the brilliant Martha Mansfield as the object of affection for both Jekyll and Hyde, this movie isoften cited as a ground-breaking milestone in cinema history and demonstrates what can be done with talented actors and a good story rather than the gimmicks of CGI. This classic movie is accompanied by a short comedy featuring none other than Charlie Chaplin, a true giant of the silent film genre. Catering for the evening are the quite There’s bound to be fantastic Scream For Pizza whose wonderfully something for everyone! fresh, hand-crafted pizza have wowed the pallets of many people attending festival and events of late. There is also a licenced bar on the premises providing refreshments until 23:00. On Saturday the festival continues with an event firmly aimed at the family audience. Family Funny Bones begins at 10:30 and showcases the comedy genius and acrobatic skills of Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd amongst others, with some live accompaniment from piano player, Stuart Angus. The fun continues with more excellent lunchtime grub from Scream For Pizza. Tickets for the Friday night event are priced between £10 and £15 and the family event is priced at a very reasonable £5. s an artist myself, speaking to other musicians in the local music scene I’ve noticed this culture we’ve developed of bands and artists playing and not staying. If this is something that you do or if this resonates with you, I hope to change your mind Aand show you the vast benefits of watching every artist or band that you play with. Speaking with local artist Thought Trumpet, we both acknowledged this issue and the growing problem in the local music scene. He states that: “Bands either don’t stick around after their sets or don’t turn up until they’re about to go on”. Why is this an issue? You may think. It is part of common decency: How can you expect people to listen to you if you don’t listen to them? This is not only an issue in the local music scene, however, as the legendary London venue The 100

Club announced that they would no longer be posting set times ahead of a show to encourage people to watch all the support acts. This led to a massive online debate that outraged many and, eventually, they had to re-address their decision stating that: “We didn’t expect such a reaction to the statement made about no longer announcing stage times,” they said. “Though there’s been a lot of support for it, it’s made other people feel angry and concerned. The sole intention was to support the supports. Nothing else. Middle ground will be sought.” Alternative-rock outfit Slaves have spoken out about this issue too stating that: “We don’t post set times of our shows as we were the support once. We wouldn’t be here if nobody turned up to watch us.” On the other hand, people do have jobs, responsibilities or even emergencies but, in general, you have no excuse not to stay and see all the acts.Every band starts as a support act, every artist starts with a small following and every gig-goer is important in making their music heard. Staying to see every act has enabled me to meet many musicians that I may have never met, helped me make connections with venues and introduced me to new musical experiences. Playing and not staying? You are missing out on so many opportunities. Please make an effort to support the supports. Listen to them and you never know what may come of them. TOBIAS HALFORD

Tonight, Newcastle’s Riverside turned into spaceship Easy Life, manned by Captain Murray and his crew. With the first chords of most recent single ‘Earth’, the room took off, starting its journey into space. Fuelled by what seemed like an unlimited amount of energy, the crowd soared higher and higher with every song; yelling every single word, arms raised in enthusiasm. Half-way through the set, Easy Life switched gears into hyperspeed with ‘Ice Cream’ dedicated to the Day 1 Crew…the engine would have caught fire if there had been one.
