Venue: Aquila Atlantis Hotel

PAG Network Meeting

The aspects of the “Once Only” Principle (OOP)

A modern State, aiming to provide its citizens with good services, means that Public Administration remains neutral, reliable, functional and efficient. The concept of the OOP focuses on reducing administrative burden for individuals and businesses by re-organising public sector internal processes, instead of making citizens and business users adjust to existing procedures. It is based on the assumption that collecting information is more expensive and burdensome than sharing already collected information. Hence, this principle proposes to collect information only once and then share this information, respecting other constraints, such as regulations. So far, many European Union countries have started to implement the once-only principle at a national level, while its cross-border implementation is still fragmented and limited to a very few services.

Its interior consists of impressive stalagmites and stalactites and is one of the most important and well-known caves in Crete and Greece in general. According to Greek mythology, this cave hosted Rhea to give birth to Zeus and she went

there in order to escape from Cronus’ fury. Cronus devoured his children because he wanted to prevent

the prophecy according to which Cronus would be killed by his son. The cave is 2200 square meters, it is lighted sufficiently and the visitor can walk around it easily because there is a well formed path 250 m long.

*Please note that the stairs can be slippery and it is chilly inside the cave. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and clothes.

General information about Crete and Heraklion city

Heraklion is the largest city in Crete with approximately 175,000 people, the capital of the region and the economic center of the island. The town is well known for its natural beauty, mild climate, strategic position, cultural heritage and scientific background. All these features have created an appropriate environment to support the broader entrepreneurial activity in the region and stimulate the local economy. Today Heraklion is the top choice for tourist destinations in the Mediterranean thanks to its strategic geopolitical position connecting three continents and many different cultures. Furthermore the city is the commercial and scientific center of the island. For more information on attractions and sights in Crete and Heraklion city please go to

Transport tips From and to the Airport:

Heraklion International Airport, “Nikos Kazantzakis” is the primary airport on the island of Crete. It is

located about 5 km east of the city center, near the municipality of Nea Alikarnassos. Two transport options are available for getting to and from Heraklion Airport:

Taxis offer a fast and flexible way to and from Heraklion International Airport. Arriving passengers can pick up a taxi at the Taxi Station, which can be reached at the Arrival level of

the Terminal, available 24 hours a day, all year round. Heraklion Taxis are grey and have a sign on the top of the car with the word "TAXI". The taxi fare from the airport to the city center is

about €15, plus luggage fare. The price is doubled between 12h00 mid night and 06h00. The fare for the luggage is also doubled in this time period. Journey time to central Heraklion is around 20 minutes. Pre booked private taxis are also available upon request at extra charge, you may call them in advance from the reception of your hotel, or directly to their call centre, they will come and pick you up from almost everywhere. Heraklion Airport Taxi Phone Number: (+0030) 2810 210102

Local buses leave from the airport to the center of Heraklion city every few minutes. The bus stop is a couple of minutes’ walk from the terminal building of Heraklion Airport. It is the most economical transportation from / to the airport. Local shuttle buses leave from the airport every few minutes from early morning until late in the evening from Monday to Saturday and less frequently on Sundays. City bus number 78 goes to the city center in Heraklion. Journey time to central Heraklion is around 20 minutes. Local Bus Phone Number: (0030) 2810 245020.

MEETand EAT inCRETE FINE DINING GUIDE 2008 SUMMER FREE from LETTER the EDITOR THERE'S MORE TO CRETAN CUISINE THAN LUKE-WARM MOUSSAKA… I've long held the belief that quite often food is the point of entry into the core of a country's culture, and for many, a country's cuisine is the primary reason for visiting a destination. Eating what and where the locals eat is a great way to scratch below the surface of a country, to understand its history and to become a part of its community. A summertime visit to a Greek Island offers many opportunities unique to this time of year. This is when home-grown produce is at its peak-bursting with color and flavor. And you will find no better location to indulge in this foodfest than Crete. Always celebrated as a tourist destination for beaches and antiquities, the Island, a treasure trove of wild foods and deeply rooted cooking traditions, is becoming a foodie hotspot, which could rival many of the European capitals in the gourmet game. But finding a great meal here on the Mediterranean's 5th largest island is not an easy task, which is why Meet and Eat in Crete was created-to help you go out of the way and off the tourist track. New to the Guide this summer is a selection of some of our top chosen tavernas in and around the island. As an antidote to the ubiquitous beach scene, try one of our agrotourism tavernas in a breathtaking mountain village, such as Prinos in Ano Asites.

Environmental Effects from the Operation of Heraklion Airport “Nikos Kazantzakis”. Necessity Or Not of Its Relocation E

st 1 International Conference on Environmental Design (ICED2020) 24‐25 October 2020, Athens, Greece ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS FROM THE OPERATION OF HERAKLION AIRPORT “NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS”. NECESSITY OR NOT OF ITS RELOCATION E. Sklavounou1*, G. Palantzas1,2, D. Nalmpantis1,2 1School of Science and Technology, Hellenic Open University, 26335, Patras, Greece 2School of Civil Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 54124, Thessaloniki, Greece ([email protected]) ABSTRACT Airport operation affects its location both negatively and positively. It is undoubtedly related to socio‐economic development in the region, increasing income and jobs. However, it relates to the activity of air transport in general and airports, in particular with negative effects on the environment and, as a result, on local communities. This diploma thesis addresses the negative impacts of airport operations on the environment as well as practices to manage these environmental impacts. Conclusions are made as to whether airport operations have more positive or negative per region. It also assesses the impact on the environment of the operation of Heraklion Airport and whether its relocation to Kastelli Pediados is a better solution. The basic scientific knowledge was acquired from the study of Greek and foreign literature and legislative framework regarding the interaction of environment and air transport / airports. The effects of the operation of the existing airport "Nikos Kazantzakis" were recorded and described, followed by the collection and submission of data for the airport under construction in Kastelli Pediados. There are also interviews with organizations and residents and recorded views of various organizations. In conclusion, there is a need for harmonious coexistence of airports with local communities.

The Programme on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights at the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) issues urgent appeals addressing violations of economic, social and cultural rights that are related to acts of torture and other forms of violence, as well as violations falling within OMCT’s mandate in which economic and financial actors are involved. Since July 2003, all urgent appeals related to the right to adequate housing are done in collaboration with the Coordination Office of the Housing and Land Rights Network of Habitat International Coalition (HIC-HLRN). This compilation collates all urgent appeals, open letters and press releases issued by the programme from 2001 till April 2004 on violations of the right to adequate housing of the Roma in Greece. In particular, the urgent appeals and press releases highlight forced evictions, threats of or attempts at evictions that were carried out, under the pretext of preparations for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
