Summary (Description of the study and most relevant results): The issue concerning the social exclusion of Gypsies has been examined in relation to their lack of access to social goods (i.e. education, employment, housing, health, welfare). In the last decades, the tendency for Gypsies to settle, has prompted some groups to establish improvised settlements for themselves on the outskirts of large cities, most of which lack essential facilities. Conflicts and rejection have been quite common phenomena among the surrounding inhabitants. The rate of illiteracy among the Gypsies is high – over 65% - while unemployment is also a major problem. Moreover the use of health services, social welfare and social security services has been considered inadequate. The state intervention policy – since the 80’s responsible institution has been the General Secretariat for Popular Training – concerning mainly education rather than employment, has been ineffective and has had a lot of organizational problems stemming from the malfunctioning of the Greek public sector. Proposals for policy intervention have focused on the aforementioned problems on the assumption that there is enough research on Gypsy culture and society, with the Gypsies themselves participating in the formation of specific policies.

Summary (Description of the study and most relevant results): This report refers to issues that concern Roma history and life. As far Roma’ s health is concerned, the report mentions that health is closely relevant to living conditions. The most of Roma live under perilous conditions near rubbish dumps and as a consequence they are continuously exposed to several types of microbes. Furthermore, as the lack of water and electricity makes every hygiene rule impossible to be followed, it is not weird why Roma’s health is in bad condition and why Roma live less than other people. It is also a fact that Roma have difficult access to sanitary treatment as they face a lot of prejudice and rejection by doctors and nurses. As a result they feel that they are not covered by the National Health Service. A reason that comes to be added to this situation is the Roma’s lack of the most basic legal documents, like identity cards etc.

Summary (Description of the study and most relevant results): This document refers to Social Exclusion and Education concerning several social groups. Among other issues mentioned the document refers to Roms and People from Pontus. More Specifically chapter 5.1 refers to Roms who live in Western Thessaloniki and describes their living conditions. It is mentioned that these people live near Dentropotamos river, something that shows from itself the perilous living conditions. The low level of the ground where Roms live is the main reason of frequent bloods and severe problems of high level humidity inside the shacks. Furthermore, there is no electricity, no access to running water and to sewage system whereas simultaneously there is air pollution as the settlement is situated close to the biggest installations of Cheical Industry of North Greece. The topic of the document refers also to the fact that Roms of this region face several health problems that the non Roma residents do not face. Only 63% of Roma children are vaccinated and this is supposed to be the result of lack of information about the necessity of vaccination in small ages.

Summary (Description of the study and most relevant results): Mr Dimitris Dousas, educator and writer, explains the reason why he believes that the resettlement of the Roma population of Karditsa to Mavrika region close to the rubbish dump is unacceptable. He claims that the local authorities of Karditsa tried to create a settlement for Roma near to the biological cleaning installations, a place absolutely inappropriate and unsanitary to live. Finally, the authorities decided to send them to settlement close to the local rubbish dump. The selection of that region is totally unacceptable as people living there may breath dioxine, produced by rubbish, a dangerous thing for their health. Irrigation canals are close to the settlement, something very dangerous as they might cause drownings. The region usually floods and become dangerous for those living there. A small roma child has already been drown in the river and the other three ones hopefully escaped the danger. Mr Dimitris Dousas worns that if these people continue live there and no authority takes care of them, more drownings will happen.
