KEY POINT PRESENTER'S NOTES Before you start Pre Ops check Read the manufacturer's instructions before you use the jigsaw. Pre-operational checks should be carried out each time you are about to use a jigsaw. Make sure that its test tag is within the expiry date. If not, do not use the saw. Check the full length of all electrical leads for any damage & current test tags. Don't use the leads if the tags are missing or out of date. All leads should be positioned so they won’t be damaged. Jigsaws can be used to cut wood, mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum and plastics, and is suitable for straight and orbit cutting actions. Make sure you have the correct blade for the type of material you’re cutting, and that the jigsaw is capable of performing the task - don’t force a small tool to do the job of a heavy duty tool. Look over the housing for breaks and cracks. The wheel and blade should have no damage and be operating properly. The blade must be in place and secure, and the blade guard in place. Consider respiratory protection when cutting materials that produce dust. To avoid splinters, gloves may also be required, so ensure you check with your supervisor or workplace safety requirements. The PPE should be fitted correctly, and all loose clothing and hair should be tucked in or covered. Job set up Select a suitable work area that does not cause excessive crouching, bending or stretching, and has sufficient light on the work area. Don't work in an area where the saw could possibly get wet. Check the workplace is safe from hazards such as trips, falls and flammable substances. The work piece must be held securely and prevented from twisting or slipping. Material that slips or rocks during cutting can bind and fracture the blade. Secure the piece that will be cut off so it doesn’t fall and be aware of sparks falling when cutting metal. Make sure the jigsaw is turned off, then plug the power lead into an outlet and turn the outlet on. Activate the saw and let it run, watching for flutter or excessive vibrations that might indicate that the blade is not installed properly or the wheel is not balanced. Operation Before you start to cut, make sure you have a comfortable stance and stand beside the saw, not behind it. Start cutting when the motor has reached full speed. Don't use excessive pressure and allow the blade to do the work. When you’ve finished the cut, let the saw stop before placing it down on a stable surface. Upon finishing the job, clean the saw and work area. Remove the cord from the outlet by the plug, not by tugging on the cord. Always carry the saw by the body, not by the cord. Remember If the saw is damaged it should be tagged out and not used until checked by an authorised repairer. SUMMARY It is important to know how to use a jigsaw safely. When you perform the pre-operational checks and assess your workplace properly, it will ensure that you will operate in the safest possible environment. Remember if the saw is damaged it should be tagged out and not used until checked by an authorised repairer. Find other topics at trainingsnippets.com.au.
