The Portuguese Guitar: History and Transformation of an Instrument Associated with Fado
THE PORTUGUESE GUITAR: HISTORY AND TRANSFORMATION OF AN INSTRUMENT ASSOCIATED WITH FADO NUNO JOSÉ DOS SANTOS ANAIA CRISTO A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO JANUARY 2014 © Nuno José dos Santos Anaia Cristo 2014 ABSTRACT Since the mid-nineteenth century the Portuguese guitar has been connected to the fado genre. Over the years, both the instrument and the song genre have experienced significant transformations, at times related to aesthetic changes, at other times conditioned by social, political and economic alterations. This thesis focuses on the historic organological development of the Portuguese guitar, as an instrument associated with fado, and explores how the Lisbon guitar model has been progressively replaced by the Coimbra guitar model (both in practice and iconic symbolism). I argue that this tendency is related to the current new era of Portuguese guitar practice with its origins in the post-revolutionary period lived in Portugal after the political overthrow in 1974. My study is based on the review and analysis of the most recent works on the subject, fieldwork among players and makers, iconographic and archival research, and my own experience as a player and maker of both models of the Portuguese guitar. ii DEDICATION To my parents iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Many thanks to: York University for the 2012 GS-CUPE Unit 1 Graduate Financial Assistance - Dom Award. The Faculty of Graduate Studies for the allocation of the 2012-2013 Fieldwork Fund, without whose generous financial assistance this research would have not been possible; My supervisor Louise Wrazen and secondary reader Judith Cohen for all their encouragement, help and insightful advice throughout this process; My teachers at York University: Rob van der Bliek, Robert Witmer, Robert Simms, Trichy Sankaran, and Sherry Johnson. -

Popular Music Journalism As Public Sphere
UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING PEDRO NUNES Department of Film and Media POPULAR MUSIC AND THE PUBLIC SPHERE: THE CASE OF PORTUGUESE MUSIC JOURNALISM Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January, 2004 i Abstract Music journalism has been acknowledged as an important space of mediation between artists and consumers. Journalists and critics have played an historical role in the creation of discourse on popular music and are acknowledged by the music industry as an important referent in promotion strategies. Research on the subject has been mostly focused either on the relationship between music journalism and the wider music industry in which it operates or on its status as a field of cultural production. Little consideration has been given to the role played by music journalists in articulating popular music with wider political, social and cultural concerns. This thesis will examine the case-study of Portuguese popular music journalism. It will address its historical evolution and current status by taking into consideration some dimensions, namely, the wider institutional contexts that frame the status of music journalism and how they work upon it, the ideologies and values realised in journalistic discourse, the journalists’ relationship to the music industry (as represented by record labels/companies and concert promotion companies) and issues of interactivity with readers. The thesis will draw on theories of the public sphere and, to a lesser extent, on Bourdieu’s notions of field, capital and habitus to assess the possibilities for music journalism to create reasoned discourse on ii popular music and, therefore, contribute to wider debates on the public sphere of culture. -

Biography Boss Ac
BOSSAC BIOGRAPHY BOSS AC Inheriting a passion for music from his mother Ana Firmino, one of the greatest Cape Verdean talents, Boss AC soon revealed his rare talent. His first appearance on record, “Rapública”, was released back in 1994. It featured on a compilation which brought exposure to some of the most prominent underground Portuguese rappers such as Black Company, Zona Dread and Líderes da Nova Mensagem. He is one of the few artists from that era who still go on releasing nationally successful rap hits. His debut album, “Mandachuva”, from 1998 was recorded in the United States and produced by Troy Hightower, one of the most requested Hip-Hop producers in the US. Early on AC demonstrated his strong open minded vision, foretelling the maverick route he would follow. During the following years he embarked on several career paths – he produced and promoted shows, released records, composed music for TV programs (“Masterplan” and “Último Beijo”) and films (“Zona J” and “Lena”), and still found time to participate in works of some of the greatest national music artists, such as Xutos & Pontapés and Santos e Pecadores, among others. His second album of originals “Rimar Contra a Maré” – fully recorded, produced and mixed by the author himself – was an exploration of Portuguese- African music, fusing its traditional roots with the modern sounds of the street. It was also perhaps a more autobiographical and introspective record, revealing the artist’s wiser mindset. Success was slowly but inexorably on its way. The success of “Rimar Contra a Maré” crossed continents; a result of which was the nomination of the music video “Dinero”, at the African Video Awards, in the category “Best Special Effects”, by the well known South-African “Channel0”, a sort of African MTV. -

Press contact: Aurelia Leeuw FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE [email protected] +32 (0) 2 511 44 54 www.authorsocieties.eu Creators tell the Commission enough is enough Pedro Almodóvar, Charles Aznavour, Andrea Bocelli, Daniel Buren, Ennio Morricone, Alejandro Sanz, Albert Uderzo and over 1000 other creators urge the Commission to properly address the transfer of value taking place at their expense online. Brussels, 11/07/2016 - The Commission finds itself under increasing pressure from the cultural sector following letters sent by recorded songwriters and musicians, branch organisations and now authors and creators from all artistic sectors. This latest letter, signed by some of Europe’s most important cultural exporters and influencers, urges the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, to quickly find a real solution to enable a fair sharing of value on the Internet. Today, Internet giants argue that copyright obligations don’t apply to them and hide behind safe harbour exemptions to avoid paying creators and rights holders fairly. It’s not just major pop stars or the music sector at large that is under threat because of this; it is the entire creative ecosystem made up of composers, authors, directors, screenwriters, photographers, sculptors, painters, etc. “The dominant players on the market, like YouTube, are platforms built on user uploaded or aggregated content that don’t or only barely provide remuneration for our work” says the letter, warning that “this pulls the entire market value of creative works down in a never ending race to the bottom.” GEMA member, songwriter and Scorpions singer Klaus Meine said that “the Commission cannot afford to miss out on this opportunity to tackle the biggest challenge of the decade. -

Visões Do Fim Do Mundo Em David Bowie E António Variaçõesc
Visões do fim do mundo em David Bowie e António Variações* Visons of the End of The World in David Bowie and António Variações LUÍS CARLOS S. BRANCO** PALAVRAS-CHAVE: António Variações, David Bowie, Glam Rock, Tom Apocalíptico, Holismo. KEYWORDS: António Variações, David Bowie, Glam Rock, Apocalyptic Tone, Holism. -
