Anything eccentric, out of the way, contrary to custom, may fall under this head though it may be everything but lunacy proper, ”walking alone in tlie moonlight, talking loudly to oneself, ،،thinking ,e. g٠ aloud, laughing to oneself without an obvious reason, and similar ١ (ﺟﻨﻮن) unconsciously performed habits. The Arabic term yjnun applies to a state of mind in which a person is possessed by jinn. The category of lunatics majamn (plural of majnun 2) comprises in our opinion the Roman division into furiosi, dementes and mente capti. Although the grades of derangement of intellect differ obviously, yet they are assigned to the same category. The Bible relates some cases of derangement of mind. King Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4 33) and Saul (1 Samuel 19 24) we would classify as lunatics. The latter ،،stripped off his clothes . and -lay and an evil spirit ن ”down naked all that day and all that night troubled him 4 (1 Sam. 17 14). The Gospels thus describe the “possessed” one: He wore no clothes, neither abode in a house (Luke 8 27) but had his dwelling among the tombs (Mark 5 3). Before the law he has the same rights which the minor enjoys. Like the minor he has a trustee according to whose decision he may marry. But if both parties are insane, a marriage cannot take place. If the husband right to ask ־becomes insane during the marriage the woman has the the qadi for a divorce, which will be granted to her in case her husband is “irrecoverably lost.” The man on his part may either divorce a wife with a deranged mind, or, if the case is less serious, await her improvement which is left to his entire discretion. He cannot be forced to divoi’ce her although lunacy may make a marriage null and void. No evidence of a lunatic is accepted before the court. It is not necessary, that a person must be inhabited by a spirit to be considered insane. There are symptoms which we are apt to regard as signs of jin n , even when they have no relation whatsoever In every case, in which such manifestations of a deranged ؛.with them intellect are noticed, the “man of the street” is inspired by reverence to those hidden forces of unknown origin which appear in the lunatic, the bahlul has the halo of a ؛thus giving him supernatural influence saint 2 The causes of lunacy are manifold.

  • Three Conquests of Canaan
    ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case.

Twelve caves of Western Mecsek, Southwest Hungary were examined between September 2010 and April 2013 from the millipede (Diplopoda) faunistical point of view. Ten species were found in eight caves, which consisted eutroglophile and troglobiont elements as well. The cave with the most diverse fauna was the Törökpince Sinkhole, while the two previously also investigated caves, the Abaligeti Cave and the Mánfai-kőlyuk Cave provided less species, which could be related to their advanced touristic and industrial utilization.     JOHN ADNEY EMERTON John Adney Emerton 1928–2015 DURING HIS TIME AS REGIUS PROFESSOR of Hebrew at the University of Cambridge John Emerton stood at the forefront of international research on the Hebrew Bible and related disciplines. In addition he assumed sig- nificant administrative positions and was tireless in several editorial roles, while at the same time he gave leadership in teaching during a period when the faculties in Cambridge in this field were exceptionally strong. I The path to this position was clear enough once he had embarked on his academic studies at Oxford in 1947, but there was nothing in his family background to explain his particular choice of subject for his first degree. He was born on 5 June 1928 in Winchmore Hill in North London as a first son to Adney Spencer Emerton and Helena Mary (née Quin). His father was an accountant with the family firm which became United Dairies. In 1938 the family moved the short distance to an area of Southgate known as Lakenheath, which meant that John attended Minchenden School there. He was clearly successful, gaining entrance to Corpus Christi College, Oxford, to read Theology. This was from the start a response to his strong sense of vocation to the Anglican ministry, fulfilled by ordina- tion some five years later. This vocation was nurtured primarily at school and at the local Anglican church. Some of his Minchenden friends were committed Christians; of them, some were later ordained and Emerton kept in touch with them throughout his life.     Notes on Hebrews 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable DATE The writer said that he and those to whom he wrote had come to faith in Jesus Christ through the preaching of others who had heard Jesus (2:3-4). Apparently those preachers had since died (13:7). The original readers had been Christians over an extended period of time (5:12). So probably the earliest possible date of composition was about A.D. 60. Some scholars believe that the book must have been written before A.D. 70, since the writer spoke of the mentioned sacrifices as being offered at the time of writing (7:27-28; 8:3-5; 9:7-8, 25; 10:1-3, 8; 13:10-11). However, the writer showed no interest in the temple, but described the sacrifices like those the Israelites offered when the tabernacle stood. He evidently used the present tense to give these references a timeless quality, rather than indicating that temple worship was still in practice. Nevertheless a date of composition before A.D. 70 seems probable.1 "The best argument for the supersession of the old covenant would have been the destruction of the Temple."2 The reference to Timothy's release from imprisonment (13:23) appears to date the book later in the life of that outstanding man. Almost all scholars believe that the Timothy referred to in Hebrews is the same one named elsewhere in the New Testament. No other New Testament writer mentioned Timothy's imprisonment. The imprisonment of Christians seems to have been a well-known fact of life (10:34; 13:3).
