    Results of the 2002 MCM 187 Modeling Forum Results of the 2002 Mathematical Contest in Modeling Frank Giordano, MCM Director COMAP, Inc. 57 Bedford St., Suite 210 Lexington, MA 02420 [email protected] Introduction A total of 525 teams of undergraduates, from 282 institutions in 11 coun- tries, spent the second weekend in February working on applied mathematics problems in the 18th Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). The 2002 MCM began at 8:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, Feb. 7 and officially ended at 8:00 p.m. EST on Monday, Feb. 11. During that time, teams of up to three undergraduates were to research and submit an optimal solution for one of two open-ended modeling problems. Students registered, obtained con- test materials, downloaded the problems at the appropriate time, and entered completion data through COMAP’S MCM Web site. Each team had to choose one of the two contest problems. After a weekend of hard work, solution papers were sent to COMAP on Monday. Ten of the top papers appear in this issue of The UMAP Journal. Results and winning papers from the first sixteen contests were published in special issues of Mathematical Modeling (1985–1987) and The UMAP Journal (1985–2001). The 1994 volume of Tools for Teaching, commemorating the tenth anniversary of the contest, contains all of the 20 problems used in the first ten years of the contest and a winning paper for each. Limited quantities of that volume and of the special MCM issues of the Journal for the last few years are available from COMAP.

Travaillant d’arrache-pied depuis 2013 à se débarrasser L principalement des alliés de Jiang Zemin, l’alliance Xi-Wang a enfin réussi à purger le Parti-État afin de positionner ses alliés. Ce faisant, la transition qui aura vraiment lieu cet automne n’est pas la transition Hu Jintao- Xi Jinping, celle-ci date déjà de 2012. La transition de 2017 est celle de la Chine des années 1990 à la Chine des années 2010, soitde la Chine de Jiang Zemin à celle de Xi Jinping. Ce sera également le début de l’ère des enfants de la révolution culturelle, des « zhiqing » [知青] (jeunesses envoyées en campagne), qui formeront une majorité au sein du Politburo et qui remanieront la Chine à leur manière. Avec les départs annoncés, Xi pourra enfin former son « bandi » [班底] – garde rapprochée – au sein du Politburo et effectivement mettre en place un agenda de politiques et non pas simplement des mesures visant à faire le ménage au cœur du Parti-État.     HOW CHINESE NEW MEDIA CONSTRUCT ELITE FEMALE ATHLETES: GENDER, NATIONALISM, AND INDIVIDUALISM by QINGRU XU (Under the Direction of Dr. Peggy J. Kreshel) Around the world, sport is principally organized around masculinity. Women are often afforded limited access to sports participation, situated as “others” in a male-dominated domain. This gender inequality is mirrored in sports media; selective representations have a tremendous influence on people’s perception and understanding of sport, athletes, and society. In this study, I examined media representations of two Chinese female athletes of different status—specialized athlete, Ding Ning, and professional athlete, Li Na— in China, a nation in the midst of political/economic/cultural transformation and a sports reform initiative. Analyzing stories drawn from two Chinese web portals, I focused particularly on how gender, nationalism, and collectivism/individualism entered into media representations to determine if there were differences in the portrayals of these two female athletes. The portraits that emerged were very distinctive. A textual analysis revealed significant differences in each of the three conceptual areas. A fourth theme, which I have identified as “monetary value” also emerged. Possible explanations for and implications of differences in the media portrayals of the two athletes at this particular historical moment in Chinese society were provided. Ce dernier a également resserré son emprise non seulement sur Beijing – par le biais de son proche collaborateur Wang Xiaohong [王 小洪]3-, mais bien aussi sur le pays en entier. Tandis que le temps d’« abattre les tigres » [打虎] et que les déraillements de la jiwei sont encore perceptibles, en particulier dans la province du Hebei4, fort est de constater que l’impact n’est pas celui escompté, sauf dans les cas de Su Shulin [苏树林]5 et Jiang Jiemin [蒋洁敏]6, et qu’il ne sera pas vraiment possible d’évaluer les dégâts de cette campagne avant la formation du Comité central de 2022.

The Seamaster 2016 Women’s World Cup will be held in Philadelphia, USA. It is the first time that USA is hosting the tournament. The previous occasion was in XEBIO Arena, Japan. The 20 players taking part at the Seamaster 2016 Women’s World Cup qualified through their Continental Cup’s, apart from wildcard player ZHANG Lily (USA) and substitute SOLJA Petrissa (GER) who replaces the World Champion DING Ning (CHN). YU Mengyu (SGP) withdrew from the tournament and is being replaced by POTA Georgina (HUN). Cheng I- Ching (TPE) replaces Asian Cup Champion Liu Shiwen (CHN).
