Vania Gunawardi, Jakarta, Indonesia DIPLOMA, PHOTOGRAPHY

Choosing the right institution was very important to me – a college that would provide me with the best learning experience and make me career ready. Photography was my passion and now I wanted to pursue it as a career. Humber, with their expert faculty, modern labs, devices that meet the industry standards and multiple resource centres, was exactly the kind of college I was looking for; I wanted to learn from the very best. As part of my program at Humber, I also decided to go to Otago Polytechnic in New Zealand for a summer abroad experience. The idea of gaining academic credits while travelling sounded like a perfect summer plan to me. It was a chance to meet students from around the world and learn the cultural history of the country. I gained valuable Canadian experience by working as a Global Learning Student Ambassador and also as a photographer for the Humber Hawks. Both jobs provided me with a mix of skills and experiences that I can add to my resumé, which is going to be very useful for my future employment. When I look back to my first day on campus and remember how overwhelmed I was, I feel fortunate to have come this far with the support of many, including my peer mentor. I have so many new friends now and have expanded my network by getting to know new people in the industry.

Watch why each year 6,500 international students from 130+ countries choose Humber College tinyurl.com/HumberGlobalStudentStories 4 HUMBER INTERNATIONAL VIEWBOOK 2021| 2022

Tatiana Acevedo, Bogotá, Colombia DIPLOMA, ADVERTISING AND MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS

Before coming to Canada, I worked in communications and marketing for ten years in Colombia. I built a successful career, but I felt some gaps in my digital marketing skills. Humber’s program was the right fit for me. It helped me improve my skills especially in social media, copywriting, and media planning. I further polished my skills by working in a part-time job at Humber and during my social media marketing internship. I am now working as a Junior Communications Specialist at Loblaws, Canada’s largest retailer. I am amazed by this opportunity with lots of learning and growth potential, and I’ll take full advantage of it.

Tomoko Abe, Sapporo City, Japan BACHELOR, MUSIC

I first came to Canada through a working holiday program, and although I was a jazz vocalist for 10 years in Japan, I couldn’t sing in English. I started taking weekly private singing lessons at Humber College after work. As time went by, I became more interested in the Bachelor of Music program at Humber. One day, I sat in a first-year vocal master class and was impressed by their performance. They were all professionals. I wanted to improve so I enrolled at Humber. During the program we also learned about the history, new technologies, production and the business of music. My goal is to educate and develop the music culture in Japan. The best thing about this program is the teaching faculty and how they help you to connect with the industry. We had CEOs and managers come to our classes and speak to us. This exposure increased my confidence, and networking helped me land full-time job offers. My professors also helped me work through assignments to develop interpersonal skills, like public speaking. The most significant moment for me was getting my co-op placement in an independent adjusting company. This opportunity came as a result of a Humber College partnership and connections with the industry. 18 HUMBER INTERNATIONAL VIEWBOOK 2021| 2022

Anxhelo Mecollari, Elbasan, Albania ADVANCED DIPLOMA, MECHANICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

I visited Canada multiple times before as a tourist and fell in love with Toronto. I had a dream to study mechanical engineering and as I was researching, I came across the program at Humber and also a professor who was from my country, Albania. We scheduled a phone call and he provided me with some in-depth information and insights into the program. I knew that Humber was the right choice. Each year, I found myself learning new concepts and skills that prepared me for the upcoming projects. In my fourth semester, I designed and built a hydraulic automated gripper that can utilize pick and place robotic systems weighing up to 4 kg from point A to B. My program also had a capstone project component, where our group along with students from other similar programs, worked on a project with SEW–EuroDrive. We designed an attachment for an automated guided vehicle that could handle large size but lightweight payloads of up to 400 kg. We also created additional storage space for extra batteries and tools. Currently, I am working as a research assistant at the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation. I enjoy assisting with various projects, mechanical services, and also training students on how to operate various equipment. 22 HUMBER INTERNATIONAL VIEWBOOK 2021| 2022

DIPLOMA, FITNESS AND HEALTH PROMOTION Humber is more than a college to me, it’s a place that gave me a sense of belonging. Being an international student can be challenging, but with the resources and support available on campus including IGNITE Student Life, I had the most memorable years of my college life. In my first year, I created the Humber Chinese Students Association – a platform for Chinese students to share our culture, values and traditions with everyone else. Especially the Lunar New Year, which is the biggest cultural event celebrated in China and other Asian countries. Gaining international work experience is important and that’s why I worked part-time at the International Centre and then as a First-Year Experience mentor. You make so many new friends by volunteering on campus and by attending events. Apart from studying, I enjoy going to the gym and taking meditation classes. In my free time, I explore Toronto. You will find me at Woodbine Beach in summer (yes, Toronto has beaches). And in winter, I go snowboarding at Mountain.
