Re-reading Select Sherlock Hohnes and Byomkesh Bakshi Stories 296 CHAPTER 6. RE-READING SELECT SHERLOCK HOLMES AND BYOMKESH BAKSHI STORIES: - Several Sherlock Holmes narratives other than A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, 'The Adventure of the Speckled Band" and 'The Adventure of the Three Students", are also replete with Arthur Conan Doyle's anti-subaltern and Orientalist ideologies. Likewise, with the exception of "The Inquisitor", "The Gramophone Pin Mystery", "Where There's a Will" and "Picture hnperfecf, several other Byomkesh Bakshi nairatives assert their author's anti-imperial stance and exemplify specific areas in which the Bengali inquisitor challenges the hegemony of the Eurocentric detective stories, particularly the Sherlock Holmes canon. Kshetra Gupta observes, "Like Saradindu, his detective...[and detecdve stories are]...overwhelmingly Bengali though belonging to a later generation" (Gupta, Satyajiter 8). As demonstrated before, the Byomkesh Bakshi stories written before 1947 banish the colonisers from the Indian colony they themselves have so strenuously developed and modernised, and the remaining twenty three written after the Indian independence develop the former colony as an independent nation with an independent Bengali literature that has, even after being permeated by the colonial conventions, retained an Indianness and has developed itself as an alternative power against the British detective stories like those written by Doyle, Agatha Chiistie and G.K.Chesteiton. Re-reading Select Sherlock Holmes and Byomkesh Bakshi Stories 297 Doyle's support of the British colonial expansion and his advocacy of the domination of the Orientals are also present in "A Scandal in Bohemia", the third story of the Sherlock Holmes canon to be first published in the July 1891-edition of The Strand Magazine.

ISSN 2250-3366 eISSN 2394-6075 ANANDA DAS GUPTA Byomkesh Bakshi of Kolkata and the Sleuth on the Baker Street Abstract For 80 years, Byomkesh has been Bengal’s favourite literary character, his only competition coming from Satyajit Ray’s Feluda who made his debut in 1965. However, there is a crucial difference between the two. The Feluda stories were written for teenagers; whereas Saradindu Bandopadhyay wrote for adults. The mysteries that confront Byomkesh quite often hinge around lust, adultery, promiscuity, even incest. This paper analyses the annals of Byomkesh in the context of the works of the international masters of mature detective fiction, such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Raymond Chandler. Keywords: Byomkesh Bakshi, detective stories, Feluda stories, Satyajit Ray, Saradindu Bandopadhyay, Bengali literature, Indian English literature. • The Influence of English on Bengali Literature ∗ Syeda Nahida Yeasmin
ISSN: 2079-567X Banglavision Vol. 14 • No. 1 • June 2014 The Influence of English on Bengali Literature ∗ Syeda Nahida Yeasmin Abstract Modern Bengali Literature, i.e. literature that in a broad sense has developed since 1850, is the product of English education, the cultivation of the English language and the study of English literature. The literature before this was largely dominated by religious and feudal ideas. It followed certain set patterns and conventions, which were worked with tiresome repetition as in the Vaishnaba Lyric verses and the Mangal Kavyas. There was no want of strong lyrical feeling, or narrative skill. But wit and ingenuity rather than imagination dominated their literary style. Under the influence of the West they have not merely built up an entirely new literature but also carried to other provinces the message of the West. In the last century the largest number of good writers in Bengali belonged to that class which had most been influenced by the West. Michael Madhusudan Datta, Bankimchandra Chatterjee, Romeshchandra Datta, Hemchandra Banerjee, Nabinchandra Sen looked up to the West for inspiration. It became inevitable that they should be influenced by Western literature and thought, but their works did not lose in quality on this account. Introduction: The influence of English on Bengali literature is most striking. Apart from the debt that individual Bengali writers owe to the West, there have been influences of various natures on the general development of Bengali literature. These influences have appeared in different ways. There has been similarity of characters. There has been indebtedness for themes.

"The hiquisitof 242 CHAPTERS. POSTCOLONIAL NARRATIVES: BYOMKESH BAKSHI. A. "THE INQUISITOR": - As far as the conversations between Byomkesh Bakshi and his associate and litterateur Ajit Bandyopadhyay are concerned, 'The Inquisitor" (1933), originally published as "Satyanweshi" in Bengali, appears to be the first narrative of the Byomkesh Bakshi canon, through chronologically "Father Kanta", which Sreejata Guha translates as "The Gramophone Pin Mystery" in Picture Imperfect and Other Byomkesh Bakshi Mysteries. was the first story to be written and published in 1932. "Father Kanta" was followed by "Shiraonto Heera" (1932) before "Satyanweshi" was published. It is in 'The hiquisitof that Byomkesh Bakshi and Ajit Bandyopadhyay meet for the first time at a Calcutta boarding house in the locality of Chinabazar (Sen 7). This can be compared to the first introduction of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson to one another in A Study in Scarlet. The period of publication of the first Bakshi story is significant because the 1930s was the decade of intense armed nationalist movement in Bengal and Punjab (Chandra, et al., 188). hi "The hiquisitof Saradindu Bandyopadhyay has identifiably incorporated elements of anti-colonial resistance by depicting the detective and the narrator of his adventures as typical Bengali characters who reveal their distinctively Indian identity in their hybridity and in their actions as distinct from the European fictional detectives like Holmes and Hercule Poirot "The Inquisitof 243 who are pronouncedly Eurocentric and exhibit imperial ideology in their characterisation. 1925 - the time earmarked as the year in which Ajit Bandyopadhyay first meets Bakshi - denotes a cmcial phase in the stmggle for independence in southern Bengal in wake of violent inter-racial killings which reached their nadir in Calcutta riots in 1926 (Chandra, et al, 1960).

  • Sustainability of Changing Agricultural Systems in the Coastal Zone of Bangladesh
Sustainability of Changing Agricultural Systems in the Coastal Zone of Bangladesh By BYOMKESH TALUKDER A thesis submitted to the School of Environmental Studies in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Environmental Studies Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (September, 2012) Copyright ©Byomkesh Talukder, 2012 Abstract Transformations of the various agricultural systems have been taking place in the coastal zone of Bangladesh. While some farmers continue to follow traditional practices, in recent years, others have become involved in massive shrimp cultivation, shrimp-rice cultivation, a rice-based improved agricultural system or a shrimp-rice-vegetable integrated system. All these types of agriculture are being practiced under highly vulnerable environmental conditions. The long-term livelihood, food security and adaptation of the coastal people largely depend on the sustainability of these agricultural practices. In this context, assessing the level of sustainability is extremely important and will be essential for developing future policy options in Bangladesh. This study attempts to examine the sustainability of agricultural practices in the coastal region of Bangladesh. A field study was carried out in 2011 in five villages of five upazilas in the mature and active delta areas of the country. The data were collected through in-depth questionnaire surveys, focus groups discussions, field observation, key informants and secondary materials. A comprehensive suite of indicators was developed considering productivity, efficiency, stability, durability, compatibility and equity of the coastal agriculture. The categories and the indicators were weighted using Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) to measure the sustainability level of five study sites. The integrated agricultural system (shrimp-rice-vegetable) of Dumuria appeared to be the most sustainable system among agricultural practices, and other integrated systems (rice-based improved agricultural system) of Kalaroa were also found to show a good level of sustainability.

This is the crucial point where one addresses the absence of the woman in the Feluda series. Whenever I have discussed the characterization of Feluda, I have been asserting the privileging of the male rationality over feminine intuition or passion has rid the narrative of any space for the woman. Unfortunately, it is a fact that children’s fiction in Bengali, suffers the lack of female characters. Even the genre is called ‘kishoresahitya’ (literature for young males), which quite benignly does away with the ‘kishori’ (young girls) from the scheme of things. Young female readership has been handled extremely callously by authors writing in this genre. It seems like one is forced into a world where one learns to think like a boy, perceive like a boy, read like a boy regardless of the reader’s gender.
