While some farmers continue to follow traditional practices, in recent years, others have become involved in massive shrimp cultivation, shrimp-rice cultivation, a rice-based improved agricultural system or a shrimp-rice-vegetable integrated system. All these types of agriculture are being practiced under highly vulnerable environmental conditions. The long-term livelihood, food security and adaptation of the coastal people largely depend on the sustainability of these agricultural practices. In this context, assessing the level of sustainability is extremely important and will be essential for developing future policy options in Bangladesh. This study attempts to examine the sustainability of agricultural practices in the coastal region of Bangladesh. A field study was carried out in 2011 in five villages of five upazilas in the mature and active delta areas of the country. The data were collected through in-depth questionnaire surveys, focus groups discussions, field observation, key informants and secondary materials. A comprehensive suite of indicators was developed considering productivity, efficiency, stability, durability, compatibility and equity of the coastal agriculture. The categories and the indicators were weighted using Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) to measure the sustainability level of five study sites. The integrated agricultural system (shrimp-rice-vegetable) of Dumuria appeared to be the most sustainable system among agricultural practices, and other integrated systems (rice-based improved agricultural system) of Kalaroa were also found to show a good level of sustainability. The massive shrimp cultivation system of Shyamnagar and Kaliganj appears to be least sustainable. A traditional agriculture system with some improved methods followed in Bhola Sadar Sustainability of Changing Agricultural Systems in the Coastal Zone of Bangladesh ii also performed in a satisfactory manner, but there were limitations in terms of its location in the active delta. The level of the sustainability measured in this study allows for a comparison among agricultural practices of the five study sites. The information generated from the study may be used in formulating policies for this part of the country. Measuring agricultural sustainability in this way produces a useful summary of sustainability issues and also provides some vital learning experiences. A holistic and interdisciplinary approach is attempted in this study for assessing and comparing the sustainability level of coastal agricultural systems. It has the potential to become useful as one of the frameworks for sustainability assessment. Almost all the workplaces were shut about for 66 days from 26 March 2020. As a result, the number of workplace deaths is little bit low than previous year 2019, but not that much low as it is supposed to be. Every year Safety and Rights Society (SRS) is monitoring newspaper for collecting and preserving information on workplace accidents and the number of victims of those accidents and publish a report after conducting the yearly survey – this year report is the tenth in the series. SRS depends not only the newspapers as the source for information but it also accumulated some information from online media and through personal contact with workers representative organizations. This year 26 newspapers (15 national and 11 regional) were monitored and the present report includes information on workplace deaths (as well as injuries that took place in the same incident that resulted in the deaths) throughout 2020.

RE-READING SELECT SHERLOCK HOLMES AND BYOMKESH BAKSHI STORIES: - Several Sherlock Holmes narratives other than A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, 'The Adventure of the Speckled Band" and 'The Adventure of the Three Students", are also replete with Arthur Conan Doyle's anti-subaltern and Orientalist ideologies. Likewise, with the exception of "The Inquisitor", "The Gramophone Pin Mystery", "Where There's a Will" and "Picture hnperfecf, several other Byomkesh Bakshi nairatives assert their author's anti-imperial stance and exemplify specific areas in which the Bengali inquisitor challenges the hegemony of the Eurocentric detective stories, particularly the Sherlock Holmes canon. Kshetra Gupta observes, "Like Saradindu, his detective...[and detecdve stories are]...overwhelmingly Bengali though belonging to a later generation" (Gupta, Satyajiter 8). As demonstrated before, the Byomkesh Bakshi stories written before 1947 banish the colonisers from the Indian colony they themselves have so strenuously developed and modernised, and the remaining twenty three written after the Indian independence develop the former colony as an independent nation with an independent Bengali literature that has, even after being permeated by the colonial conventions, retained an Indianness and has developed itself as an alternative power against the British detective stories like those written by Doyle, Agatha Chiistie and G.K.Chesteiton. Re-reading Select Sherlock Holmes and Byomkesh Bakshi Stories 297 Doyle's support of the British colonial expansion and his advocacy of the domination of the Orientals are also present in "A Scandal in Bohemia", the third story of the Sherlock Holmes canon to be first published in the July 1891-edition of The Strand Magazine.

Background: Samadhan is a Non-government, Non-political, Non-religious multidimensional development service oriented local level voluntary organization. It is working in south-west region of Bangladesh from October 14, 1987 for poverty alleviation and sustainable socio-economic development for the poor and ultra poor inhabitants of the Kopotakkha, Betraboti, Shonai, Ichamoti, Harihar, Sreenadi and Mukteswari River basin areas under Jessore and Satkhira District. The said areas are the most poverty-stricken & disaster prone. Every year the Flood, waterlogged, Drought, Arsenic contamination in water and some other disaster are occurred here several times. The peoples are loosing wealth, disrupting their livelihood pattern becoming livelihood risk and vulnerable situation. At least 80% families are directly or indirectly depend on traditional agriculture systems. Agro based modern technologies are very difficulties to apply in this areas. The Agriculture activities dose not enhances to change their livelihoods of the 60% families. Locally they don’t have sufficient job opportunities i.e. they are remain un-employed for more than 09 months of the year. More than 50% people have to go to out for searching alternative jobs; especially in the district and city town for off firming job i.e. they are changing their profession for survivability. Some of the poor families undertake fishing, collection and selling of fire woods and cow dong, vending of vegetables and spices etc as alternative source to earn money for their survivability. The women headed day labor families can’t arrange suitable job. The numbers of extremely poor families are more than 25%, they are never considered to involve with any development activities.

Mazhabuddin4 1Department of Fisheries, Bangladesh 2Department of Basic Science, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Patuakhali 3USAID, Bangladesh Agricultural Value Chains Project, Development Alternatives Inc., Faridpur, Bangladesh 4Winrock International, Khulna, Bangladesh Abstract The consequence of water logging on Beel Dakatia fisheries, the adaptability of people in terms of occupation with the new situation arisen and present livelihood conditions of fish and Prawn/ Galda (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) Gher farmers at Beel Dakatia in Dumuria, Phultala and Daulatpur thana under Khulna district were surveyed from April to September 2013. From the survey the community indicates that 21-40 age groups made maximum strength and majority of them were Muslims (58%). It was found that 16% of them can sign and the percentages of school going children were high (86%). In the study area, it was found that 62% of people lived with nuclear families and highest households were 5-7 people/family. Highest incomes of the people (44%) were 10,000 to 20,000 BDT. About 62% people lived in Katcha house and the construction materials were Golpata and Mud, 72% could be use electricity. Majority of the people (52%) % used others tube well water for drinking, 56% used closed semi pucca latrines. In any disease mostly preferred place were upazila hospital (52%). Thus to achieve better social structure, the Government and its development partner needs to re-orient their programmer and implementation an affirmative action for the fish and prawn gher farmers.
