Content. The character of Sharadindu Bandhopadhay's most famous character, Boekesh Bakshi, first appeared as a character in the novella Satyanweshi (Inquisitor). The story takes place in 1931 in the Chinabazar area of Kolkata, where the non-governmental detective Byomkesh Bakshi, thanks to the permission of the police commissioner, begins to live in a mess in the area under the pseudonym Atul Chandra Mitra to investigate a series of murders. Most of the stories are written by Sharadinda under the pseudonym Ajit, who is said to have met Byomkesh in a mess in Chinabazar. Byomkesh Bakshi is described in Satyanweshi as a man of twenty-three or twenty-four years who looked well educated. Later in the story it became known that Byomkesh lives on a three-year-old rented house on Harrison Road. The only person living with him is his attendant, Putram. At the request of Byomkesh, Ajit begins to live house with them. It is also noted that Tomkesh did not like it when he was called a detective, and the word investigator was even worse. So he fashioned a new name for himself and put it on a brass plate in front of his house. The plaque read: Bemkesh Bakshi Satyanweshi (Inquisitor). Unlike other main characters of detectives, Bykkesh Bakshi marries, gets old, contemplates buying a car, etc. When Sukumaran is accused of murder in the story of Artamaartham, Boehkesh meets Satyabati, Sukumar's sister, whom he later marries. In adim Ripu's story there is some information about Bykkesh's early childhood. His father, Mahadev Bakshi, was a math teacher at school and practiced The Sanhya Philosophy at home, while his mother was the daughter of Vaishnavit. When Bemkesh was seventeen years old, his parents died of tuberculosis. Later, Bykkesh passed the university with a scholarship. During World War II and after India's independence, Boekesh, Satyabati and Ajit live in a dining room on Harrison Road. It is the author's imagination that the detective even assisted Sardar in his secret missions that were found to be written in one of the stories. Later they decide to buy land in Keyatala in the south of Kolkata and move to their new home. Byomkesh stories Saradindu Bandopadhyay wrote 32 Byomkesh stories from 1932 to 1970 until his death. In his early stories, Ajit Bandhopadhiai is described as his companion-cum chronicler of his stories. But in some cases there Ajit also investigates in the absence of Bykkesh (Makorshar Roche, Shoilo Rahashya). All these stories are written in the traditional Bengali language, but later stories go into spoken language. It is also found that later stories are not written by Ajit, as he is much more engaged in his publishing business. The stories are not very complex, but very clinging, with a long series of events. From the first Satyanweshi, where Byomkesh destroys an international drug racket, to household secrets and crimes like Arthamanartham, Rosh Mahar Makorshar, etc, everything is equally pleasant. Byomkesh gradually ages through the series, and he has a son named Hoka (little boy) as a nickname in the series. Sharadindu did not want to continue by Themkesh's stories, so he stopped writing Bykkesh's stories from 1938 to 1951. At that time he was busy writing scripts for films in Bombay. After his return to West Bengal, there was still a demand for the history of Byomkesh and so he wrote Chitrachor (Picture Imperfect) in 1951 and gradually until 1970, when his latest story Bishupal Badh (The Assassination of Bishupal) was not completed due to his untimely death. He is well aware of Bengali literature, from where he often quotes. Unlike other detectives, he tries to do justice for the victim by punishing the perpetrator rather than following the law blindly. Manjula is a successful Bengali writer whose first novel in English has got favourable reviews from the West. She talks about her life and her darling husband Pramod, and fondly reminisces about Malini, her wheel-chair bound sister. After the interview, Manjula is ready to leave the studio but is confronted by an image. Gradually Manjula starts unfolding her life showing two facets of the same character. The conversations between the character on stage and the chhaya-murti go on and Manjula peels layer after layer, revealing raw emotions and complexities of the relationship between Manjula, Promod and Malini. We can relate to both Manjula and Malini… all of us being flawed in some way or the other, and that’s what makes us human. Director’s Note I wanted to explore the text of Girish Karnad’s Broken Images with my own understanding of Manjula, the lady portraying two facets of the same character. Despite all her shortcomings and flaws, she did not degenerate into a stereotypical vamp. Although she had made unforgivable mistakes, wasn’t there enough reason for her to exercise duplicity and betrayal? I found myself asking this question and wanting to see the larger picture through another prism. It has taken years for the Bengali stage to come up with an adaptation of the 2004 play.

Arts Section Minutes of the Meeting of the Expert Committee held on 14th, 15th,17th and 18th October, 2013 under the Performing Arts Grants Scheme (PAGS). The Expert Committee for the Performing Arts Grants Scheme (PAGS) met on 14th, 15th ,17thand 18th October, 2013 to consider renewal of salary grants to existing grantees and decide on the fresh applications received for salary and production grants under the Scheme, including review of certain past cases, as recommended in the earlier meeting. The meeting was chaired by Smt. Arvind Manjit Singh, Joint Secretary (Culture). A list of Expert members present in the meeting is annexed. 2. On the opening day of the meeting ie. 14th October, inaugurating the meeting, Sh. Sanjeev Mittal, Joint Secretary, introduced himself to the members of Expert Committee and while welcoming the members of the committee informed that the Ministry was putting its best efforts to promote, develop and protect culture of the country. As regards the Performing Arts Grants Scheme(earlier known as the Scheme of Financial Assistance to Professional Groups and Individuals Engaged for Specified Performing Arts Projects; Salary & Production Grants), it was apprised that despite severe financial constraints invoked by the Deptt. Of Expenditure the Ministry had ensured a provision of Rs.48 crores for the Repertory/Production Grants during the current financial year which was in fact higher than the last year’s budgetary provision. 3. Smt. Meena Balimane Sharma, Director, in her capacity as the Member-Secretary of the Expert Committee, thereafter, briefed the members about the salient features of various provisions of the relevant Scheme under which the proposals in question were required to be examined by them before giving their recommendations.

    SETTING THE STAGE: A MATERIALIST SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF CONTEMPORARY BENGALI GROUP THEATRE FROM KOLKATA, INDIA by ARNAB BANERJI (Under the Direction of Farley Richmond) ABSTRACT This dissertation studies select performance examples from various group theatre companies in Kolkata, India during a fieldwork conducted in Kolkata between August 2012 and July 2013 using the materialist semiotic performance analysis. Research into Bengali group theatre has overlooked the effect of the conditions of production and reception on meaning making in theatre. Extant research focuses on the history of the group theatre, individuals, groups, and the socially conscious and political nature of this theatre. The unique nature of this theatre culture (or any other theatre culture) can only be understood fully if the conditions within which such theatre is produced and received studied along with the performance event itself. This dissertation is an attempt to fill this lacuna in Bengali group theatre scholarship. Materialist semiotic performance analysis serves as the theoretical framework for this study. The materialist semiotic performance analysis is a theoretical tool that examines the theatre event by locating it within definite material conditions of production and reception like organization, funding, training, availability of spaces and the public discourse on theatre. The data presented in this dissertation was gathered in Kolkata using: auto-ethnography, participant observation, sample survey, and archival research. The conditions of production and reception are each examined and presented in isolation followed by case studies. The case studies bring the elements studied in the preceding section together to demonstrate how they function together in a performance event. The studies represent the vast array of theatre in Kolkata and allow the findings from the second part of the dissertation to be tested across a variety of conditions of production and reception.

    Chapter-II A Brief History of Television in India 47 Chapter-II A Brief History of Television in India Television in India— a chronology of events Television came to India on September 15, 1959 with experimental transmission from Delhi. It was a modest beginning with a make shift studio, a low power transmitter and only 21 community television sets. All India Radio provided the engineering and programme professionals. A daily one-hour service with a news bulletin was started in 1965. In 1972 television services were extended to a second city—Mumbai. By 1975 television stations came up in Calcutta, Chennai, Srinagar, Amritsar and Lucknow. In 1975-76 the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment brought television programmes for people in 2400 villages in the most inaccessible of the least developed areas tlirough a satellite lent to India for one year. Doordarshan is a Public broadcast terrestrial television channel run by Prasar Bharati, a board formed by the Government of India. It is one of the largest broadcasting organizations in the world in terms of the infrastructure of studios and transmitters. Doordarshan had its beginning with the experimental telecast started in Delhi in September, 1959 with a small fransmitter and a makeshift studio. The regular daily transmission started in 1965 as a part of All India Radio. The television service was extended to a second city Mumbai in 1972. Till 1975, only seven cities were covered by Doordarshan and it remained 48 the only television channel in India. Television services were separated from Radio in 1976. Each office of All India Radio and Doordarshan were placed under the management of two separate Director Generals in New Delhi.
