Saying Goodbye to Friends: Fan Culture as Lived Experience. By Dr. Anne Marie Todd San José State University One Washington Square San Jose, CA 95112 408.924.5391 [email protected] Abstract The series finale for NBC’s sitcom Friends was a media event, a two-hour broadcast promoted for months, and immediately followed by cast appearances on late night comedy shows and the next morning’s news shows. The show’s popularity demonstrated by fan response to the last episode positions the online and broadcast media discourse surrounding the finale as a rich cultural text for examining the influence of the modern sitcom on fans’ cultural identities and social communities. The Friends broadcast finale taken together with the online discussion of the show creates a site for the production and consumption of fan culture in three ways.

  • The Blue French Horn
Running head: INTERTWINING ORIGIN STORIES IN HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER The Blue French Horn: Intertwining Origin Stories in How I Met Your Mother Sydney Stein Dr. Leah LeFebvre Honors Thesis Department of Communication and Journalism University of Wyoming Spring 2017 INTERTWINING ORIGIN STORIES IN HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER 2 Abstract This study investigates the intertwining origin stories in the television show, How I Met Your Mother. The TV show focuses on the main character, Ted Mosby, on his search for love, a wife, and mother of his children, with the help of his best friends. While research regarding origin stories is incomplete, How I Met Your Mother will allow for framing of origin story research as the show features Ted narrating his quest to his future children. Through the analysis of a popularized television show, origin story research will be expanded to demonstrate that two origin stories can occur side-by-side as the narrator places himself in the story. Ted tells the story to reaffirm his love for the Mother, while subtly using it as a way to position himself close to Robin again. The narrative Ted tells allows him to be in the action, igniting a flame for an old lover through the telling of the story. Keywords: origin stories, How I Met Your Mother, love, television INTERTWINING ORIGIN STORIES IN HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER 3 The Blue French Horn: Intertwining Origin Stories in How I Met Your Mother When Ted Mosby said, “Kids, I’m going to tell you an incredible story, the story of how I met your mother,” his kids did not expect their mother to take so long to arrive in the story, and the audience did not expect Ted to end up with someone other than the mother.

  • Pre-Print As Published in Everybody Hurts, Edited by Rebecca Williams
Pre-Print as published in Everybody Hurts, edited by Rebecca Williams: Chapter 11 When Production is Over: Creating Narrative Closure in Fan Edits Nicolle Lamerichs The endings of television series are often met with critical reactions by fans. An ending makes or breaks a show, and our memory of it (Williams 2015). For example, the final episode of Breaking Bad (2008-2013) was praised by fans and critics alike since it tied up all the loose ends perfectly and allowed us to say goodbye to the characters. A more ambiguous, and often discussed, television finale is that of HBO television series The Sopranos (1999-2007) which ends with a sudden cut-to-black. During the final scene, the Sopranos arrange to meet at dinner. While the jukebox plays Don’t Stop Believin’, and all the family members gather at the diner, Meadow attempts to park the car. When Tony looks up, the scene is rudely cut to black. Years later, viewers still ask themselves: ‘Did Tony Soprano die?’ In 2014, David Chase issued a statement to Vox that suggested Tony had not died, but immediately corrected the article in Vulture (Zoller Seitz, 2014): A journalist for Vox misconstrued what David Chase said in their interview. To simply quote David as saying, 'Tony Soprano is not dead,' is inaccurate. There is a much larger context for that statement and as such, it is not true. As David Chase has said numerous times on the record, 'Whether Tony Soprano is alive or dead is not the point.' To continue to search for this answer is fruitless.

DOI: 10.23817/strans.10-10 Kwiryna Proczkowska Uniwersytet Wrocławski/ Polska Dowcipy (audio)wizualne w sitcomach amerykańskich Abstract (Audio)visual jokes in US-American sitcoms This paper deals with visual jokes consisting of aural verbal part and visual (non)verbal part that can be found e.g. in US-American sitcoms such as Friends, The Big Bang Theory, and How I Met Your Mother. The first part of the paper characterises audiovisual works in general, tak- ing into consideration relations between visual and aural channel. Then, the characteristics of voice-over translations are described. The main part of the paper analyses chosen examples of the visual jokes and their official Polish translations. It is of main interest to see whether the analysed fragments have the same function, i.e. humorous function, also in the target version, and if the relations between the visual and the aural channel were respected by the translator. Keywords: audiovisual translation, sitcom, voice-over translation, visual joke, complementarity 1.
