Bucharest: zeta Books. 464 pp. ..... 412 ARTYKUŁY · ARTIKEL · ARTICLES DOI: 10.23817/strans.10-1 Jerzy Żmudzki Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie/ Polska Transcendencje w translacji i transcendowanie translacyjne Abstract Transcendences in translation and translational transcending The aim of this paper is to present and confirm a given ontological truth which underlies every translation process being an act of communication. In other words, this paper aims at characterizing ontological specifics of translation process in its multi-dimensional diversity. Interpretative analysis of this issue is rooted in anthropocentric translation studies devel- oped by F. Grucza. Moreover, it is based on its main paradigm and included in the tasks of pure translation studies which are to describe and characterize the model of translation relationship. Transcendence (Lat. transcendere) means to go beyond or to surpass the limits. Thus, strictly in reference to translation perceived as communication, it is the process of go- ing beyond ontological limits which is characteristic to every linguistic communication. This process results in establishing a two-dimensional semiotic configuration in which a mental and conceptual construct (recognized by the subject who is communicatively active) remains in semiotic transcendence with the text being a materially existing signal and manifested by tangible signs. Keywords: ontological and semiotic transcendence, transcending, translational transcen- dences, model of translation, mental and conceptual reality, semiotic materially existing reality Temat, który w ramach tego projektu chcę poddać specyficznej analizie i inter- pretacji, jedynie z pozoru budzić może podejrzenie pewnej intelektualnej pro- wokacji, jednak w żadnej mierze nie jest ona moim zamiarem. Realnym celem zapowiedzianych rozważań jest natomiast wykazanie, udowodnienie wręcz okre- ślonej prawdy ontologicznej, która leży u podstaw każdego procesu translacji jako komunikacji. Zaś przyczynę i motyw sięgnięcia po ten termin i kategorię 12• Jerzy Żmudzki transcendencji, zastrzeżoną (niekiedy wręcz zawłaszczoną) przez teologię i filo- zofię, stanowi fakt pomijania w wielu teoriach, modelach i koncepcjach translacji jako procesu rzeczywistych uwarunkowań ontologicznych a konkretnie specyfiki ontologicznej tego rodzaju aktywności ludzi w roli translatorów. Deficyty w tym ARTICLES · zakresie prowadzą do interpretacyjnych uproszczeń, piękno słownych metafo- ryzacji terminologicznych i podobnej zamaszystości modelowania interpreta- cyjnego. Lexical blends have thus been described as (mostly) ephemeral lin- guistic creations, playful and witty, that are likely to occur in popular press, advertising, and product naming (Bryant 1974; Lieber 2010). Although we can nowadays understand the key characteristics of blends, in terms of their semantic, phonological and orthographic fea- tures, corpus-based studies of blends associated with particular types of discourse remain scarce. Television discourse is no exception. It has been cited as a rich source of blends (Mattiello 2013; Sams 2016), yet few have hitherto conducted their detailed analysis (cf. Andriani, Moe- hkardi 2019). Having noticed that blends frequently occur in the titles of episodes of animated television shows for children (e.g. Smeldorado in Inspector Gadget, e ree Smureteers in e Smurfs, Pinknic in e Pink Panther), we decided to investigate their structural char- acteristics. For this purpose, we collected a corpus of approximately 420 blends from the titles of animated series episodes, spanning 1950- 2020. e analysis has shown that haplology and hyphenation feature prominently in the collected blends, as well as that several splinters are repeatedly used in their formation.

Often, female journalists are portrayed as vivacious, ruthless, and driven individuals who must compete fiercely to survive in a man’s profession. Robin Scherbatsky (played by Cobie Smulders) of How I Met Your Mother is depicted as an attractive Canadian journalist with a tomboy past on the highly popular television series. Scherbatsky struggles to break free from covering stereotypical “fluff” stories, a genre that is common to female broadcast journalists. While she maintains a rugged and unemotional facade, she is still very womanly and vulnerable in both her career and personal life. This study will examine Scherbatsky’s dichotomous character, compare her image on the series to that of other female journalists in popular culture, and analyze her influence on the current stereotype of female broadcasters.

The show’s popularity demonstrated by fan response to the last episode positions the online and broadcast media discourse surrounding the finale as a rich cultural text for examining the influence of the modern sitcom on fans’ cultural identities and social communities. The Friends broadcast finale taken together with the online discussion of the show creates a site for the production and consumption of fan culture in three ways.
