A New Name in Echinops (Asteraceae) from Flora of Iran Archive of SID Taxonomy and Biosystematics, 10th Year, No. 34, Spring 2018 1 A New Name in Echinops (Asteraceae) from Flora of Iran Kazem Negaresh * Assistant Professor Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources University of Khuzestan, Mollasani, Ahvaz, Iran Abstract Echinops is one of the largest genera of the family Asteraceae in Iran which approximately distributed in all parts of country. Most species of genus are endemic to Iran and occurs exclusively in a very small area. Members of the genus are characterized by single-flowered capitula arranged into secondary inflorescences appearing as globose heads, which are easily distinguished from other genera of the family Asteraceae. In spite of taxonomic and phylogenetic studies, there are a few nomenclature studies regarding the genus Echinops. This research is the result of exact checking of species Echinops with International Code of Nomenclature. It was established that Echinops kurdicus Boiss. and Hausskn. (1875) is an illegitimate name as a later homonym of Echinops kurdicus Bunge (1863). So the name Echinops rahiminejadii Negaresh nom nov. is proposed here as a replacement name for Echinops kurdicus Boiss. and Hausskn. In addition, an image of the holotype is provided. Key words: Asteraceae, Echinops, Nomenclature, Replacement Name, Later Homonym. *[email protected] Copyright©2017, University of Isfahan. • Comparative Analysis and Implications of the Chloroplast Genomes of Three Thistles (Carduus L., Asteraceae)
Comparative analysis and implications of the chloroplast genomes of three thistles (Carduus L., Asteraceae) Joonhyung Jung1,*, Hoang Dang Khoa Do1,2,*, JongYoung Hyun1, Changkyun Kim1 and Joo-Hwan Kim1 1 Department of Life Science, Gachon University, Seongnam, Gyeonggi, Korea 2 Nguyen Tat Thanh Hi-Tech Institute, Nguyen Tat Thanh University, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam * These authors contributed equally to this work. ABSTRACT Background. Carduus, commonly known as plumeless thistles, is a genus in the Asteraceae family that exhibits both medicinal value and invasive tendencies. However, the genomic data of Carduus (i.e., complete chloroplast genomes) have not been sequenced. Methods. We sequenced and assembled the chloroplast genome (cpDNA) sequences of three Carduus species using the Illumina Miseq sequencing system and Geneious Prime. Phylogenetic relationships between Carduus and related taxa were reconstructed using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference analyses. In addition, we used a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the protein coding region of the matK gene to develop molecular markers to distinguish C. crispus from C. acanthoides and C. tenuiflorus. Results. The cpDNA sequences of C. crispus, C. acanthoides, and C. tenuiflorus ranged from 152,342 bp to 152,617 bp in length. Comparative genomic analysis revealed high conservation in terms of gene content (including 80 protein-coding, 30 tRNA, and four rRNA genes) and gene order within the three focal species and members of subfamily Carduoideae. Despite their high similarity, the three species differed with respect to the number and content of repeats in the chloroplast genome. Additionally, eight Submitted 28 February 2020 hotspot regions, including psbI-trnS_GCU, trnE_UUC-rpoB, trnR_UCU-trnG_UCC, Accepted 11 December 2020 Published 14 January 2021 psbC-trnS_UGA, trnT_UGU-trnL_UAA, psbT-psbN, petD-rpoA, and rpl16-rps3, were identified in the study species.

Academic Editor: Reinhard Länger Received: 18 August 2015; Accepted: 27 May 2016; Published: 27 May 2016 Abstract: The value of root and rhizome anatomy for the taxonomic characterisation of 59 species classified into 34 genera and 12 subtribes from the Asteraceae tribes Cardueae and Cichorieae was assessed. In addition, the evolutionary history of anatomical characters was reconstructed using a nuclear ribosomal DNA sequence-based phylogeny of the Cichorieae. Taxa were selected with a focus on pharmaceutically relevant species. A binary decision tree was constructed and discriminant function analyses were performed to extract taxonomically relevant anatomical characters and to infer the separability of infratribal taxa, respectively. The binary decision tree distinguished 33 species and two subspecies, but only five of the genera (sampled for at least two species) by a unique combination of hierarchically arranged characters. Accessions were discriminated—except for one sample worthy of discussion—according to their subtribal affiliation in the discriminant function analyses (DFA). However, constantly expressed subtribe-specific characters were almost missing and even in combination, did not discriminate the subtribes.

A. 3 Author for correspondence ( [email protected] ) Communicating Editor: Javier Francisco-Ortega Abstract— Previous attempts to resolve relationships among the primary lineages of Campanulidae (e.g. Apiales, Asterales, Dipsacales) have mostly been unconvincing, and the placement of a number of smaller groups (e.g. Bruniaceae, Columelliaceae, Escalloniaceae) remains uncertain. Here we build on a recent analysis of an incomplete data set that was assembled from the literature for a set of 50 campanulid taxa. To this data set we first added newly generated DNA sequence data for the same set of genes and taxa. Second, we sequenced three additional cpDNA coding regions (ca. 8,000 bp) for the same set of 50 campanulid taxa. Finally, we assembled the most comprehensive sample of cam- panulid diversity to date, including ca. 17,000 bp of cpDNA for 122 campanulid taxa and five outgroups. Simply filling in missing data in the 50-taxon data set (rendering it 94% complete) resulted in a topology that was similar to earlier studies, but with little additional resolution or confidence.

PANDEY Department of Botany and Microbiology, College of Science, King Saud University, Riyadh 11451, Saudi Arabia Keywords: Echinops mandavillei; Asteraceae; ITS; nrDNA; Endemic; Saudi Arabia. Abstract The present study explored the use of internal transcribed spacers (ITS) sequences (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) of nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) for identification of Echinops mandavillei Kit Tan, an endemic species to Saudi Arabia. The sequence similarity search using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) and phylogenetic analyses of the ITS sequence of E. mandavillei Kit Tan showed high level of sequence similarity (98%) with E. glaberrimus DC. (section Ritropsis). The novel primary sequence and the secondary structure of ITS2 of E. mandavillei could have a potential use for molecular genotyping. Introduction The genus Echinops L. belonging to the subtribe Echinopsinae of Cynareae, of the family Asteraceae comprise about 120 species (Vidović, 2011), and distributed in tropical Africa, the Mediterranean basin, temperate regions of Eurasia, Central Asia, Mongolia and North-eastern China, with the maximum number of species occurring in the Caucasus and the Middle East (Susanna and Garcia-Jacas, 2007). The genus received considerable interest for establishing natural groups with infrageneric classification (Sánchez-Jiménez et al., 2010). Morphological characters, like the pappus, which is a key taxonomic character of Cynareae, the type and density of indumentum on stems, leaf shapes and phyllaries are considered least significance in dissemination of Echinops species (Mozaffarian, 2006; Sánchez-Jiménez et al., 2010).

Summary: We describe two new species of the genus Opuntia (Cactaceae): the yellow flowering Opuntia fuscolineata Starmühler & Mucher spec. nova from the province Chiquitos in the most southeastern part of Bolivia and the white flowering Opuntia mucheri Starmühler spec. nova from the province Salta in the northeast of Argentina. Keywords: Opuntia fuscolineata, Opuntia mucheri, Cactaceae, Bolivia, Argentina, new species The east, the southeast and the south of Bolivia is covered by the Chaco, a dry woodland with mainly spiny shrubs, only 1–6m high. The Chaco is the succeeding vegetation after deforestation of the natural woody vegetation. From December to January there is only sporadic rainfall. All over the year, occasional rainy weather (no rain periods), coming up from the south, brings some rain into the Chaco area. In spite of the ideal growing conditions for Cactaceae, just about one dozen genera of the Cactus family occur in Bolivia at all. In Argentina, cacti grow in the Chaco (in the north, northeast and northwest of Argentina) as well as in the Andes mountain range. Here the conditions are similar to those of the Chaco, but the cacti in the Andes are not sheltered by shrubs and grow commonly in open habitats.

Acilepis belcheri is described as new. The rhizomiform structure of the pollen muri is discussed and compared with other Vernonieae in Old World Erlangeinae and in New World Lepidaploinae with similar muri. This study continues a series of papers ceous species in Asia under the name by the senior author aimed at delimiting Vernonia were insufficiently known at monophyletic genera within the tribe that time to determine their proper Vernonieae (Asteraceae), broadly sum- placement with regard to Acilepis, includ- marized by Robinson (1999a, 1999b, ing Vernonia attenuata DC. and V. 2007). The principal result has been the divergens (Roxb.) Edgew. These two disintegration of the extremely broad and species, widespread in southern Asia from aphyletic concept of the genus Vernonia India to China, were reviewed but left Schreb.

  • Novel Repetitive Sequences Decipher the Evolution and Phylogeny in Carthamus L
Novel repetitive sequences decipher the evolution and phylogeny in Carthamus L Shweta Mehrotra ( [email protected] ) University of Delhi Vinod Goyal University of Delhi Research article Keywords: Posted Date: May 28th, 2019 DOI: https://doi.org/10.21203/rs.2.9839/v1 License: This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. Read Full License Page 1/17 Abstract Repetitive sequences are ubiquitous features of eukaryotic genomes, which contribute up to 70-80% of the nuclear genomic DNA. They are known to impact genome evolution and organization and play important role in genome remodelling. The widespread distribution and sucient conservation of repeats reinforce the value of repetitive DNA sequences as markers of evolutionary processes. The repetitive DNA-based phylogeny reconstruction method is consistent in resolving expected phylogenetic and evolutionary relationships. In the present study, we address the isolation and characterization of four novel repetitive sequences (pCtHaeIII-I, pCtHaeIII-II, pCtHaeIII-III and pCtTaqI-I) from Carthamus tinctorius. Detailed phylogenetic analysis of 18 taxa belonging to 7 species of Carthamus has also been done with pCtHaeIII-I, and pCtHaeIII-II which clearly indicated concerted evolution while delineating phylogenetic relationships among the 18 taxa studied. The above understanding can assist in the marker assisted genetic improvement/ enhancement programmes in this crop species. Background The genus Carthamus (Asteraceae) includes about 25 species and subspecies distributed from Spain and North Africa along Middle East to Northern India. Carthamus tinctorius is grown commercially for the purpose of edible seed oil, orange-red dye, carthamine, and also has applications in herbal medicine.
