These films actualize region as a cinematic imaginary through its authenticity markers – caste/ist practices explicitly, which earlier films constructed as a ‘trope’. The paper uses the concept of Heterotopias to analyse the recurrence of spectacle spaces in the construction of Madurai, and the production of caste in contemporary films. In this pursuit, it interrogates the implications of such spatial discourses. Spectacle spaces: Production of caste in recent Tamil films To foreground the study of caste in Tamil films and to link it with the rise of ‘caste- gestapo’ networks that execute honour killings and murders as a reaction to ‘inter-caste love dramas’ in Tamil Nadu,1 let me narrate a political incident that occurred in Tamil Nadu – that of the formation of a socio-political movement against Dalit assertion in December 2012. -

The paper goes through the work of Director Ram in the Tamil film Industry (Kattradhu Tamizh, ThangaMeengal, Taramani) and aims to focus on the content of the films directed by him. The researcher, in his paper analyzes the types and kind of movies that the director has been a part of and the different types of techniques that he adopted and executed in his films. The researcher also analyses in detail, the type of character and highlighted the multifaceted role of women as portrayed in his films. KEYWORDS: Direction, Cinematography, Protagonist, Women, Characters, Film Industry, Globalization INTRODUCTION Indian cinema has been a standout amongst the most continually developing film ventures everywhere throughout the world. The wide variety and the number of dialects that are used in the nation, make the Indian film industry standout as the leading film producing unit. Indian film is a plethora of numerous dialects, classifications, and social orders. In any case, in a multilingual nation like our own, the significant focal point of the movies is on Bollywood. It has been in the service of librarians, research scholars, publishers and booksellers and those who are interested in the book world for the last 50 years. During these years, it has undergone vicissitudes of fortune with its initial regular appearance slowing down later to the extent of minimizing its active role as a significant book selection tool. Indian National Bibliography, the prime publication of the Central Reference Library, Calcutta, made its appearance as a quarterly in 1958 with annual cumulations. This arrangement continued till 1963. The periodicity was changed to monthly from January 1964, with annual cumulations. The monthly issues had to be suspended after 1977 forced by the circumstances beyond control. But at the same time persistent efforts were made to restore the periodicity to monthly as in 1964 and to revive its services to its clientele. This revival of the monthly issues was possible only from January 1984. Accordingly, all the monthly issues for 1984-1987 & 1989-93 have already been published. In order to clear the backlog and to make the publication up-to-date, for the period from 1994 -1999 only annual volumes are published. -

CHAPTER – 2 A BRIEF HISTORY OF INDIAN CINEMA Indian films are unquestionably the most –seen movies in the world. Not just talking about the billion- strong audiences in India itself, where 12 million people are said to go to the cinema every day, but of large audiences well beyond the Indian subcontinent and the Diaspora, in such unlikely places as Russia, China, the Middle East, the Far East Egypt, Turkey and Africa. People from very different cultural and social worlds have a great love for Indian popular cinema, and many have been Hindi Films fans for over fifty years. Indian cinema is world – famous for the staggering amount of films it produces: the number is constantly on the increase, and recent sources estimate that a total output of some 800 films a year are made in different cities including Madrass , Bangalore , Calcutta and Hyderabad . Of this astonishing number, those films made in Bombay, in a seamless blend of Hindi and Urdu, have the widest distribution within India and Internationally. The two sister languages are spoken in six northern states and understood by over 500 million people on the Indian sub – continent alone – reason enough for Hindi and Urdu to be chosen above the fourteen official Indian languages to become the languages of Indian Popular cinema when sound came to the Indian Silver screen in 1931 . Silent Era – The cinematographe (from where we have the name cinema) invented by the Lumiere brothers functioned better the Kinetoscope of Edison and Dickson. The Lumiere brothers who invented the cinematographe started projection of short (very short, one to two minutes long) films for the Parsian public on November 28, 1895.
