Archaeology of Cumbria ABSTRACT This thesis consists of a survey of events and materia culture in Cumbria for the period-between the withdrawal of Roman troops from Britain circa AD ^10, and the Viking settlement in Cumbria in the tenth century. An attempt has been made to view the archaeological data within the broad framework provided by environmental, historical and onomastic studies. Chapters 1-3 assess the current state of knowledge in these fields in Cumbria, and provide an introduction to the archaeological evidence, presented and discussed in Chapters ^--8, and set out in Appendices 5-10.

SMARDALE GILL Start and finish Kirkby Stephen Distance 7 miles (11km) Refreshments Kirkby Stephen and Crosby Garrett Toilets Kirkby Stephen Nearest train station Kirkby Stephen (one mile out of town) This is a lovely short route starting from the lively market town of Kirkby Stephen. For many people the highlight will be locking the bikes up at the entrance to Smardale Gill and taking a walk through the nature reserve on the old railway line as far as the impressive 14 arch viaduct. ROUTE DESCRIPTION 1. From the middle of Kirkby Stephen take the road signed Auction Mart, Soulby and Crosby Garrett at the mini roundabout. 2. As you leave town you come to a large junction by a school. Turn left here signed Waitby. 3. Follow this lovely country road to reach another junction. Turn right signed Moorlands, Stripes and Smardale Mill. Go past Stripes Farm, over a cross roads continuing straight ahead signed Crosby Garrett. After a short distance turn right signed Crosby Garrett. 4. You then come to a ford (where a stream runs across the road) with a footbridge alternative. When you reach a T-junction with no sign, turn left which will take you to Crosby Garrett. 5. Drop down to the main street through the village and turn left. Turn left again by the bus shelter signed Smardale and Waitby. Continue along this narrow lane and cross another ford or use the footbridge. You come into the little village of Smardale and the road bends to the right. Here you will find the start of the walk along Smardale Gill to the viaduct.

1 Valley of Dalebanks Beck, to the west of Crosby Ravensworth of Crosby the west Beck, to of Dalebanks Valley LCA 1 Eden Valley Fringe Yorkshire Dales National Park - Landscape Character Assessment YORKSHIRE DALES NATIONAL PARK LANDSCAPE CHARACTER ASSESSMENT LANDSCAPE CHARACTER AREAS 2 LCA 1 Eden Valley Fringe Key characteristics • Sheltered and enclosed farmland landscape on gently undulating slopes of the small tributary valleys of the River Eden which run north-east from the Orton Fells limestone plateau • The steep becks on the edge of the limestone plateau flow sporadically, but there is a dense network of small, winding streams within the valleys and throughout the lowland valley fringe landscape • Well settled landscape with spring-line villages on the edge of the fells to the south and nucleated stream-side villages within the valleys • Small-scale, historic field pattern on fringes of villages, with strong patterns of long tofts defined by walls, and isolated farmsteads • Fields are enclosed by limestone walls on the fringes of the limestone plateau and by a mixture of stone walls and hedgerows within the valleys. • Narrow tree lined gills and becks are perceptible in the more open upper valley landscapes as wooded features; small blocks of woodland, tree belts and hedgerow trees create a fairly enclosed landscape character overall • Small historic villages, built with local limestone and ‘pink’ sandstone, often centred on long greens • Villages are connected by a network of winding, narrow lanes, which are often enclosed by tall hedgerows. • Occasional long views from the upper valley slopes across the Eden Valley Fringe LCA to the upland ridges of the North Pennines and Cumbrian Fells to the north and west.

Eden Unclassified Roads - Published January 2021 • The list has been prepared using the available information from records compiled by the County Council and is correct to the best of our knowledge. It does not, however, constitute a definitive statement as to the status of any particular highway. • This is not a comprehensive list of the entire highway network in Cumbria although the majority of streets are included for information purposes. • The extent of the highway maintainable at public expense is not available on the list and can only be determined through the search process. • The List of Streets is a live record and is constantly being amended and updated. We update and republish it every 3 months. • Like many rural authorities, where some highways have no name at all, we usually record our information using a road numbering reference system. Street descriptors will be added to the list during the updating process along with any other missing information. • The list does not contain Recorded Public Rights of Way as shown on Cumbria County Council’s 1976 Definitive Map, nor does it contain streets that are privately maintained. • The list is property of Cumbria County Council and is only available to the public for viewing purposes and must not be copied or distributed. They were subsequently submitted to the Secretary of State, examined by the Planning Inspectorate and formally adopted by the County Council in January 2011. At a very late stage in the process, there was a successful legal challenge in connection with a procedural matter and the documents were quashed by the High Court. It is, therefore, necessary for the consultations to be repeated before the documents can be resubmitted to the Secretary of State. The challenge was about the inclusion, without a further round of consultations, of an Area of Search for sand and gravel known as M12 Roosecote quarry extension in Site Allocations Policy 7. This Area of Search was intended as a possible replacement for the nearby Roose sand and gravel quarry near Barrow in Furness, which is a Preferred Area in the policy.
