Background

City,

City, University of London is a global university committed to academic excellence with an excellent central London location. Led by President, Professor Sir Paul Curran, City has made significant investments in its academic staff, its estate and its infrastructure and continues to work towards realising its vision of being a leading global university. In the last REF, City doubled the proportion of its total academic staff producing world-leading or internationally excellent research. It has recently agreed a new Vision & Strategy 2026. Founded in 1894, City is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.

Violence and Society Centre

The Violence and Society Centre was established at City, University of London on 1 March 2019, with Professor Sylvia Walby OBE as its Director.

The Violence and Society Centre is producing research relevant to the agenda of ‘zero violence’. The Centre works across the School of Arts and Social Sciences (Departments of Sociology and International Politics), the School of Health Sciences and the Law School. The Centre holds research grants, supervises PhDs and runs seminars and conferences. A graduate programme in the field of ‘violence and society’ is being developed.

The Centre is interdisciplinary and international, with the following broad themes: . Theory and concepts: What is violence: developing the concepts and theories to explain the increase, decrease and variation in violence. . Measurement: Current measurement practices hide some forms of violence, especially against women: developing a new measurement framework and methods to remedy this. . Types of violence: The Centre focusses on all forms of violence and coercion, including trafficking in human beings, violent crime, and rape. Gender is mainstreamed rather than treated in isolation. . Policy and interventions: The Centre analyses what is effective in reducing violence through policy fields including: criminal justice; civil justice; security; health and gender equality. It engages with non- governmental, governmental and academic organisations. It operates on an international basis, including European and UN institutions, as well as in the UK.

. Change: Developing a theory of change. What is the future of violence, including macro-socio- historical trends; the impact of the economic crisis and situational crime analysis. What might it mean to move towards ‘zero violence’?

The Violence and Society Centre now seeks to appoint five outstanding academics to make key contributions to the research field of ‘violence and society’ and to the Centre’s development. The posts will have a primary affiliation to the Violence and Society Centre and a secondary affiliation, variously, to Sociology (2 posts), International Politics, Health Sciences, and Law.

The successful candidates will have an established record of high quality research and publications, experience of externally funded research, and engagement and impact on the non-academic world, and the expertise to educate at graduate level.

Research, rather than education, will be the primary workload of the five positions during at least the first three years. During these three years postholders will contribute to the emerging research agenda of the Violence and Society Centre under the leadership of the Centre Director, Professor Sylvia Walby. Their research activities will be agreed with the Centre Director. Thereafter, the postholders will assume a positon in their relevant Department or School, while maintaining the central focus on work in the field of Violence and Society, developing either a more conventional balance between research and education or developing a research profile supported by external funds.
