Jaipur: Seventy-four-year-old Amar Chand Kasawan has attained divine status according to the Jain community. After suffering from gangrene and pneumonia for a long time, he took up Santhara, a religious ritual of fasting unto death. Kasawan died on the fifth day of his fast but instead of mourning, the family will glorify his death. “This is a religious fast and my father-in-law really wanted to take it up,” Kasawan’s daughter-in-law, Kalpana said. This is not a stray incident in the community. Before Kasawan, 61-year-old Vimala Devi died last week after fasting for 14 days. A petition has been filed in the Rajasthan High Court, equating the practice of Santhara with the likes of suicide, euthanasia and Sati. Like Vimala Devi's family, Kasawan’s family, too, justifies it by claiming that it was a wish, which he had expressed in his diary 15 years ago.

Brahmanism emphasizes on the rites performed by, and the status of priestly class 2. Brahmanism emerged from Vedanta principles Which of the above statements is/are correct ? (a) 1 Only (b) 2 Only (c) Both 1 and 2 (d) Neither 1 nor 2 Solution: a) Brahmanism, ancient Indian religious tradition that emerged from the earlier Vedic religion. In the early 1st millennium BCE, Brahmanism emphasized the rites performed by, and the status of, the Brahman, or priestly, class as well as speculation about brahman (the Absolute reality) as theorized in the Upanishads (speculative philosophical texts that are considered to be part of the Vedas, or scriptures). In contrast, the form of Hinduism that emerged after the mid-1st millennium BCE stressed devotion (bhakti) to particular deities such as Shiva and Vishnu. The term Brahmanism is considered synonymous with Hinduism, by some scholars. Others consider the transition from ancient Brahmanism into schools of Hinduism that emerged later as a form of evolution, which happened imperceptibly, and one that preserved many of the central ideas and theosophy in the Vedas, and synergistically integrated new ideas.[8] Of the major traditions that emerged from Brahmanism are the six darshanas, particular the Vedanta, Samkhya and Yoga schools of Hinduism.

Artha J Soc Sci, 14, 3 (2015), 1-11 ISSN 0975-329X|doi.org/10.12724/ajss.34.1 From Folklore to Religious Politics: A Study of the Character of Nagdo Betala Mabel Cynthia Mascarenhas* Abstract: Nagdo Betala is one of the central characters of the well- acclaimed Kannada novel Swapna Saraswata. The novel, metaphorically presents him as the community conscience of Gowda Saraswata Brahmins (GSBs). However, reading and analysis of this character from other sources offer us an understanding of how there is more to this character than what is normally thought of. The character of Nagdo Betala has its origins in the Konkani folklore. Many a different versions of an old folksong on Nagdo Betala are available as well as the varying interpretations of his personality. This paper aims to deliberate on the use of this folk character for religious motives and the concurrent political implications at work in deriving significant meaning for the different communities. These communities are seen either associating themselves with Nagdo Betala‘s character or distancing themselves from him, and accordingly, try to elevate or degrade his personality. Keywords: Nagdo Betala; Swapna Saraswata; Konkani folklore; communities; pre-colonial; religious; political.
