GERALD THOMAS COLLECTION GERALD THOMAS COLLECTION SCOPE AND CONTENT Documents relating to the career of director GERALD THOMAS (Born Hull 10/12/1920, died Beaconsfield 9/11/1993). When Gerald Thomas died, his producer partner of 40 years Peter Rogers said: ‘His epitaph will be that he directed all the Carry On films.’ Indeed, for an intense 20-year period Thomas directed the Carry On gang through their innuendo laden exploits, and became responsible, along with Rogers, for creating one of the most enduring and endearing British film series, earning him his place in British popular culture. Thomas originally studied to become a doctor, before war service with the Royal Sussex Regiment put paid to his medical career. When demobilised in 1946, he took a job as assistant in the cutting rooms of Two Cities Films at Denham Studios, where he took Assistant Editor credits on Laurence Olivier’s Hamlet (1948) and the John Mills thriller The October Man (1947). In 1949, he received his first full credit as editor, on the Margaret Lockwood melodrama Madness of the Heart (1949). During this time Peter Rogers had been working as associate producer with his wife, producer Betty Box, on such films as It’s Not Cricket (1949) and Don’t Ever Leave Me (1949). It was Venetian Bird in 1952 that first brought Thomas and Rogers together; Thomas employed as editor by director brother Ralph, and Rogers part of the producer team with Betty Box. Rogers was keen to form a director/producer pairing (following the successful example of Box and Ralph Thomas), and so gave Gerald his first directing credit on the Circus Friends (1956), a Children’s Film Foundation production. -

Pete Garner – Original bass player in The Stone Roses (1983- 87) Unedited interview transcript I lived in Sale, went to school at Burnage High School. I only lived five minutes walk from Ian and John but where we lived there was a brook that’s separates Sale from Timperley; on one side of the brook is Manchester and the other side is WA postcode, Altrincham, Cheshire. I was on the Manchester side. It was just a footbridge but it separates Manchester from Cheshire basically. It was just a good meeting place for everyone from round our way. I used to hang around… and that’s how I met Ian and John basically. Me, and generations older than me, used to hang around on this bridge, just because it was a good focal point, somewhere to hang around. That’s how I met Ian and John, them walking across the bridge when they were going wandering like you do when you’re 13, 14… that’s how I first noticed them and got talking to them.., on the bridge basically. I think it was 77, 78. I was a year younger than them. I was 13. To me it was, oh these two older kids. When I first met Ian, I remember him, what I later found out, lying about all the bands he’d seen like The Sex Pistols. Him and John saw the Joy Division gig in Bowdon Vale youth club in Altrincham [March 14, 1979]. They went and I was gutted I didn’t go because I always loved Joy Division. -

BFI are excited to screen extracts from a previously unseen filmed interview with Dennis Potter as well as long lost single plays, Freedom in September, a Cold War era story starring a pre-Doctor Who Patrick Troughton, psychological hostage drama No Harm Done starring Coronation Street’s Helen Worth and missing sitcom pilot Porterhouse Private Eye starring Carry on... regulars Peter Butterworth and June Whitfield. As part of a BFI season of his work, the quintessential British TV dramatist Dennis Potter was interviewed by TV Critic Philip Purser for The Guardian Lecture series at the NFT (now BFI Southbank), on 30 October, 1980. When BBC editors at the time made a last minute decision not to film the event for broadcast, Potter and his producer Kenith Trodd filmed the lecture themselves with the idea of selling it to a broadcaster. Missing Believed Wiped offers an audience the first glimpse of the interview since the event almost 40 years ago. Kenith Trodd, who held the rushes in his personal archive, will introduce extracts from this revealing interview which captures a pivotal moment in Potter’s prodigious TV career.
