Welcome to the first newsletter of the new year and a big hello to all the new supporters who have joined us over the last few months. We are so grateful to those who sent us Christmas cards, they were greatly appreciated and such lovely words! Did anyone spot the recent news about efforts to save the ruin of The National Picture House cinema in Hull, destroyed by German bombs during the Blitz? All 150 people inside watching The Great Dictator survived. Plans are under way to make the ruin safe for children to visit. This month we bring you a very special DVD release. For the first time ever, the entire series of STAGECOACH WEST is available as a box set with optional subtitles. That’s all 38 episodes, in an 8-DVD Box Set. It’s such a good series, starring Wayne Rogers, Richard Eyer and Robert Bray, with guest stars including James Coburn, DeForest Kelley, Robert Vaughn, Hazel Court, Beverly Garland and James Drury. Good news for Old Mother Riley fans! On pages 22-23 there’s news of seven ‘lost’ films to be shown on Talking Pictures TV, the first on Friday 22nd January at 7:50am, after an Old Mother Riley documentary. A little-known fact about Noël Coward is his involvement with the Actors Orphanage, which he championed and raised money for, bringing joy to the lives of many children. This month we feature a new book which tells the story, see page 9 for details. We are so sad to hear the news of some of our film and TV stars who have recently gone to the great cinema in the sky, including Dame Barbara Windsor, Jeremy Bulloch, Mark Eden, Rosalind Knight and ‘Queen of Hammer’ Barbara Shelley. We will continue to keep their memories alive. This month also marks the centenary of Kathleen Byron, (11 Jan 1921–18 Jan 2009) seen, among many others, in Madness of the Heart, The Small Back Room and, of course, Together. There are some excellent premieres on Talking Pictures TV over the coming weeks, see pages 32-33 for highlights, including Laugh It Off with Tommy Trinder, Peter Sellers in Battle of the Sexes, the 1938 version of Mr Reeder in Room 13; Flanagan & Allen in We’ll Smile Again; Jungle Street with David McCallum and Jill Ireland; The Plank with Eric Sykes, Tommy Cooper and Jimmy Edwards and Calculated Risk, shot in the freezing winter of 1963.     Hull History Centre: Papers of Alan Plater U DPR Papers of Alan Plater 1936-2012 Accession number: 1999/16, 2004/23, 2013/07, 2013/08, 2015/13 Biographical Background: Alan Frederick Plater was born in Jarrow in April 1935, the son of Herbert and Isabella Plater. He grew up in the Hull area, and was educated at Pickering Road Junior School and Kingston High School, Hull. The BFI’s Missing Believed Wiped returns to BFI Southbank this December to present British television rediscoveries, not seen by audiences for decades, since their original transmission dates. The exciting, bespoke line-up of TV gems feature some of our most-loved television celebrities and iconic characters including Alf Garnett in Till Death Us Do Part: Sex Before Marriage, Cilla Black in her eponymous BBC show featuring Dudley Moore , Jimmy Edwards in Whack-O!, a rare interview with Peter Davison about playing Doctor Who and a significant screen debut from a young Pete Postlethwaite. Lost for 50 years and thought only to survive in part, Till Death Us Do: Sex Before Marriage, originally broadcast on 2 January, 1967 on BBC1, sees Warren Mitchell’s Alf Garnett rail against the permissive society, featuring guest star John Junkin alongside regular cast members Dandy Nichols, Anthony Booth and Una Stubbs. Although the existence of this missing episode from the 2nd series has been known for some years, previous attempts to screen the episode had been refused with the print in the hands of a private collector. Having recently changed hands, MBW is delighted that access has been granted for this special one off screening, for one of 1960s best known and controversial UK television characters. Following last year’s successful screening of a previously lost episode of Jimmy Edwards’s popular 1950s BBC school-themed comedy romp Whack-O!, this year’s MBW programme includes a 1959 episode entitled The Empty Cash Box. Written by Frank Muir and Dennis Norden and starring Jimmy Edwards as the cane-happy headmaster, this episode was originally broadcast on the BBC on 1st December 1959.

    The Nation’s Matron: Hattie Jacques and British post-war popular culture Estella Tincknell Abstract: Hattie Jacques was a key figure in British post-war popular cinema and culture, condensing a range of contradictions around power, desire, femininity and class through her performances as a comedienne, primarily in the Carry On series of films between 1958 and 1973. Her recurrent casting as ‘Matron’ in five of the hospital-set films in the series has fixed Jacques within the British popular imagination as an archetypal figure. The contested discourses around nursing and the centrality of the NHS to British post-war politics, culture and identity, are explored here in relation to Jacques’s complex star meanings as a ‘fat woman’, ‘spinster’ and authority figure within British popular comedy broadly and the Carry On films specifically. The article argues that Jacques’s star meanings have contributed to nostalgia for a supposedly more equitable society symbolised by socialised medicine and the feminine authority of the matron.     Soundtrack for a New Jerusalem Lyrics and Music By Lily Meadow Foster and Toliver Myers EDITED by Peter Daniel The 70th Anniversary of the National Health Service 1 Jerusalem 1916 England does not have a national anthem, however unofficially the beautiful Jerusalem hymn is seen as such by many English people. Jerusalem was originally written as a preface poem by William Blake to his work on Milton written in 1804, the lyrics were added to music written by Hubert Parry in 1916 during the gloom of WWI when an uplifting new English hymn was well received and needed. Blake was in- spired by the mythical story Jesus, accompanied by Joseph of Arimathea, once came to England. This developed its major theme that of creating a heaven on earth in En- galnd, a fairer more equal country that would abolish the exploitation of working people that was seen in the ‘dark Satin mills’ of the Industrial revolution. In the Company of Strangers is his debut novel. What inspired the story behind In the Company of Strangers? In the Company of Strangers explores the secrets and lies of Pakistan’s wealthy society as they become a target in a terror plot. Over the years, I have had the chance to observe the lives of the people here and I’ve come to realise that no matter how privileged they may be, they are still subject to the toxic issues plaguing all of Pakistan, namely domestic abuse, misogyny and shaming. There are no heroes in In the Company of Strangers. My intention was to shine a light on how flawed and vicious much of Pakistani society can be, and how much still needs to be done to improve the lives of people, especially women, here. Introduce us to Mona. What’s facing her at the start of the novel? Mona is in her early forties and is married to one of the richest men in Lahore. Despite having wealth and all the luxuries that come with it at her disposal, she is unhappy. She is trapped in an abusive marriage with Bilal and she finds her friends extremely fake and judgmental…When a former friend tries to reconnect with her, offering her a chance to venture into a glittering world of secrets and covert affairs, she doesn’t think twice.

This article performs an ethnographic study of Miss Littlewood, a 2018 musical by Sam Kenyon, that documents Littlewood’s life and work using the style of the earlier show. Miss Littlewood’s plot reveals details of Littlewood’s life and work, while its form mirrors the montage techniques that she pioneered in Britain. The article uses interviews and rehearsal observations to document aspects of the process by which Miss Littlewood was developed. It reflects on the tensions that are revealed between that relatively luxurious process and Littlewood’s political and financial realities. Ethnography was an ideal method for documenting this process because it facilitated observation of relationships between the various works and demonstrated the fluidity and creativity of academic writing.
