ORIGEN DE LA ENFERMERÍA EN EL CINE: EL GÉNERO HISTÓRICO- DOCUMENTAL Y BIOGRÁFICO José Siles González Universidad de Alicante INTRODUCCIÓN El cine y las películas constituyen una herramienta fundamental para transmitir los fe- nómenos humanos en toda su complejidad, sin renunciar a ninguna de las dimensiones que intervienen en los acontecimientos. Ya Terencio y Shakespeare formularon la famosa frase: «Nada de lo humano me es ajeno». La enfermedad, el dolor, la muerte forman parte de la na- turaleza humana y, más tarde o temprano, de una u otro forma, acaban arribando a la existen- cia de todos los seres humanos que experimentan sus vivencias de forma tan diversa como compleja; es decir, mediante un determinado tipo de estética experiencial. Al cine, nada de lo humano le es ajeno y, particularmente, aquellos fenómenos vinculados a situaciones que producen cambios notables en quienes las viven (enfermedades, dolencias, pérdidas, etc.). Carper (1999) incluyó la dimensión estética como la cuarta integrante de los cuatro niveles del conocimiento enfermero (empírico-científico, ético, personal y estético). Otros autores desarrollaron modelos basándose en estos diferentes patrones y reinterpretando el conoci- miento estético desde las necesidades tanto del paciente como de la práctica profesional de enfermería partiendo de la base de la pertinencia de la estética ante situaciones –como el sufrimiento ante la enfermedad– donde el pensamiento subjetivo adquiere una gran intensi- dad (Chinn, 1994). Debido a su potencial de configuración ideológica (Lebel, 1973), el cine ha desempeña- do un papel determinante en el desarrollo de clichés, estereotipos y en una amplia gama de modelado de todos aquellos asuntos que forman parte de la realidad histórica. -

University of Debrecen Doctoral Programme in British and American Studies A TALE OF A PUB: READING THE “CYCLOPS” EPISODE OF JAMES JOYCE’S ULYSSES IN THE CONTEXT OF IRISH CULTURAL NATIONALISM Marianna Gula 1 Introduction The 1990s’ introduction of post-colonial theory into Joyce criticism has brought about a thorough reassessment of Joyce’s relationship to politics and history in general, and British imperialism and Irish nationalism in particular. In contrast to the New Critical vision of his work as the manifestation of an apolitical, cosmopolitan modernist aestheticism, his texts have come increasingly to be seen as complex − most often subversive − sites of ideological involvement. The “Cyclops” episode of Ulysses, which most explicitly engages with the issue of Irish nationalism, has been at the forefront in this process. The chapter’s engagement with Irish nationalism, noted by the first commentators, underwent a particularly vigorous reappraisal in the past decade. This process evinced a shift from associating nationalism exclusively with the xenophobic citizen’s nostalgia and violence against Bloom to problematising the issue by contextualised readings accommodating the discourses of imperialism and nationalism. My inquiry aims to further this ongoing critical enterprise by placing the episode in the discursive context of Irish cultural nationalism. Highlighting the text against the backdrop of Irish cultural nationalism in general, not only the 1890s Celtic Revival, which provided the most immediate cultural context for Joyce and which has hitherto been mostly targeted, I explore how the text ironically re-inscribes crucial discursive formations arising out of an organic conception of the nation, and how it subversively enlists the key cultural means of their dissemination. -

Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -

No part of this survey may be reproduced without permission The comparative employment of men and women as actors, directors and writers in the UK theatre industry, and how new writing features in venues’ programming Period 1: 16 – 29 January 2006 (inclusive) Section A: Actors, Writers, Directors and New Writing. For the two weeks covered in Period 1, there were 140 productions staged at 112 venues. Writers Of the 140 productions there were: 98 written by men 70% 13 written by women 9% 22 mixed collaboration 16% (7 unknown) 5% New Writing 48 of the 140 plays were new writing (34%). Of the 48 new plays: 30 written by men 62% 8 written by women 17% 10 mixed collaboration 21% The greatest volume of new writing was shown at Fringe venues, with 31% of its programme for the specified time period featuring new writing. New Adaptations/ New Translations 9 of the 140 plays were new adaptations/ new translations (6%). Chapel Hill 2014 Approved by: Renee Alexander-Craft Ashley Lucas Della Pollock Alvaro Reyes Eric King Watts © 2014 Kashif Jerome Powell ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Kashif Jerome Powell: Specters and Spooks: Developing a Hauntology of The Black Body (Under the direction of Dr. Renee Alexander-Craft) This dissertation utilizes theories of embodiment and performance to develop a “hauntology of blackness,” which investigates imaginative sites of death constructed through the historical, social, and performative facets of institutional slavery in the United States to theorize notions of blackness and the black body. I argue that the relationship between the black body and death have conjured a death-driven specter that manifest historically, performatively, visually, and phenomenally as blackness. The rise and continual return of this “specter of blackness” positions the black body in the United States as a body “haunted” by its own biological and phenotypical disposition. Placing the theory of Jacques Derrida and Frantz Fanon in conversation with scholars such as Avery Gordon, Saidiya Hartman, Toni Morrison, and others, I evoke the language of haunting to consider the profound effect the relationship between the black body and death has had on ontological, psychoanalytic, and phenomenological understandings of blackness within post-modernity. -
Introduction to Ecovenue Ecovenue Is a Signifi Cant Theatre-Specifi C Environmental Project Being Run by the Theatres Trust
Introduction to Ecovenue Ecovenue is a signifi cant theatre-specifi c environmental project being run by The Theatres Trust. It aims to improve the environmental performance of forty-eight London theatres and raise awareness of how to make theatres greener. Ecovenue is promoting the sustainability of theatres and the reduction of carbon emissions through the provision of free theatre-specifi c, environmental advice. The project started in 2009 and runs until 2012. Forty-eight venues each undergo an Environmental Audit, and receive a Display Energy Certifi cate (DEC) and Advisory Report. They track their energy use through SMEasure. Each venue receives a second DEC a year after their fi rst to measure progress. Ecovenue includes a ‘DEC Pool’ of performing arts venues across the UK that have obtained DECs. The DEC Pool helps us to evaluate the project and share best practice and information, establish meaningful benchmarks, and provide a better understanding of energy use of theatres. Any theatre can join the DEC Pool. The Trust’s Theatres Magazine provides quarterly reports on the participants and the work of the Ecovenue project. The Theatres Trust Ecovenue project receives fi nancial support from the European Regional Development Fund.
