Kilkenny, by his wife, Anne (1707–1765), daughter of Welbore Ellis, Bishop of Meath, and a younger brother of James Agar, 1st Viscount Clifden (1734-1789). The Agars of Gowran owned c.20,000 statute acres in Co. Kilkenny, and controlled the two south Kilkenny boroughs of Gowran and Thomastown. This gave them a minimum of four seats in the Irish House of Commons, plus a fifth when an Agar was elected for the county of Kilkenny. On the strength of this considerable parliamentary influence, Bookplace of Charles Agar, Earl of Normanton Charles Agar's eldest brother, James (1734–1789), was created Baron Clifden in 1776 and Viscount Clifden in 1781. Charles Agar's ecclesiastical career began with his appointment

Fatiha KAID BERRAHAL in THELIDJI Amar -University-Laghouat For the continuous support of my PhD study and related research, for her patience, motivation, and immense knowledge. Her guidance helped me in all the time of research and writing of this thesis. I could not have imagined having a better advisor and mentor for my PhD study. There are no proper words to convey my deep gratitude and respect for her. She has inspired me to become an independent researcher and helped me realize the power of critical reasoning. In fact the Thesis writing process has been a long journey for me, seven years of research that would not have been possible without her belief in me. I also thank my wife and partner who supported me through this venture and for her stimulating discussions, for the sleepless nights we were working together, especially these last three months, before deadlines, and for all the fun mixed with irritability we have had in the last six years.

  • The Canterbury Association
The Canterbury Association (1848-1852): A Study of Its Members’ Connections By the Reverend Michael Blain Note: This is a revised edition prepared during 2019, of material included in the book published in 2000 by the archives committee of the Anglican diocese of Christchurch to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. In 1850 the first Canterbury Association ships sailed into the new settlement of Lyttelton, New Zealand. From that fulcrum year I have examined the lives of the eighty-four members of the Canterbury Association. Backwards into their origins, and forwards in their subsequent careers. I looked for connections. The story of the Association’s plans and the settlement of colonial Canterbury has been told often enough. (For instance, see A History of Canterbury volume 1, pp135-233, edited James Hight and CR Straubel.) Names and titles of many of these men still feature in the Canterbury landscape as mountains, lakes, and rivers. But who were the people? What brought these eighty-four together between the initial meeting on 27 March 1848 and the close of their operations in September 1852? What were the connections between them? In November 1847 Edward Gibbon Wakefield had convinced an idealistic young Irishman John Robert Godley that in partnership they could put together the best of all emigration plans. Wakefield’s experience, and Godley’s contacts brought together an association to promote a special colony in New Zealand, an English society free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit, an ideal English society sustained by an ideal church of England. Each member of these eighty-four members has his biographical entry.

They were my models of conscience, intellectual rigor and humane values, and without their encouragement and insights this dissertation would never have been begun, much less completed. I would particularly thank my director, Phil Barrish, for his compassion, heroic tact, and intellectual engagement with this project. His lectures for a sophomore lit course (in which I was a teaching assistant) inspired my interest in identity as an area of cultural contestation and political possibility. Committee members Brian Bremen and Janet Staiger have been similarly generous and collegial mentors whose comments on drafts of this project were both demanding and heartening, and whose interests and expertise were crucial to the dissertation’s development.

  • Report of the Working Group on Slavery, Memory, And
REPORT OF THE WORKING GROUP ON SLAVERY, MEMORY, AND RECONCILIATION TO THE PRESIDENT OF GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY Washington, D.C. June 3, 2016 REPORT OF THE WORKING GROUP ON SLAVERY, MEMORY, AND RECONCILIATION TO THE PRESIDENT OF GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY Washington, D.C. June 3, 2016 Dr. John J. DeGioia, the president of Georgetown University, assembled the Working Group on Slavery, Memory, and Reconciliation in September 2015. His charging letter outlined three tasks for the Working Group over the course of the academic year: Make recommendations on how best to acknowledge and recognize the university’s historical relationship to the institution of slavery. Examine and interpret the history of certain sites on the campus. Convene events and opportunities for dialogue on these issues. This report offers an overview of the Working Group’s activities, reflections on its mandate and work over the last academic year, and recommendations to the President on how the university community should continue its engagement with this history and its legacy. Although submission of this report concludes the Working Group’s responsibilities, the Working Group understands the report as offering direction and encouragement for the continuing efforts of the university. The report is organized in four sections. The first section sketches the Working Group’s activities over the seven months between its charging meeting on September 24, 2016, and the transmission of this report to the President. The second section offers the Working Group’s reflections on its seven months of consultation and deliberation, organized around the three concepts in the Working Group’s name: slavery, memory, and reconciliation.
