n the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 24th a massive earthquake struck I central Italy, whole villages in the provinc- es of Rieti, Ascoli Piceno, and Perugia fell to the ground. Among the victims so many children, many of whom had gone on holiday to stay with their grandparents, still linked to the towns where they were born in, grew up at and aged in. This tragedy shocked and moved Italy and the whole world; there are extraordinary manifestations of solace and solidarity everywhere. The mobilization of volunteers from all over Italy offering their support to the families of Amatrice, Accumoli, Pescara del Tronto, Arquata del Tronto and surrounding municipalities, was immediate. The feeling of fear, confusion, injustice and anger, in addition to the sadness, was overtaken by people’s need to make themselves useful and to lend a hand to the survivors. The Protezione Civile Toscana was promptly activated and its members restlessly dug through the rubble, rescued the wounded, mounted tents, provided bed covers and distributed food and water to the people who had lost everything and who could not return to their homes that were uninhabitable or nonexistent.
