Silvano “Nano” Campeggi is often referred to as Florence’s Greatest Living Artist. Campeggi produced over 3000 posters and graphic illustrations for such major filmmakers as MGM Studios, Warner Brothers, Paramount, Universal, Columbia Pictures, United Artists, RKO, and Fox. 64. Many of the films whose posters he illustrated won Oscars, including Casablanca, Ben Hur, Singing in the Rain, An American in Paris, West Side Story, Exodus, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and Gigi. In the 1950s and 1960s, Campeggi became known as The Artist to the Stars. Today, his larger-than-life images of Hollywood’s greatest actresses are instantly recognizable cultural icons: the regal bearing of Grace Kelly; the smoky essence of Elizabeth Taylor; a green-eyed Lauren Bacall, sly and sultry in beret and cape; a perfectly coiffed Ava Gardner radiating power and control; a towering Rita Hayworth as the unobtainable, unconquerable redhead; a radiant Sophia Loren displaying as much worldly, earth-mother warmth and wisdom as she does sheer beauty. Ron English Hollywood’s male stars also fell captive to Nano’s discerning eye: Marlon Large Marilyn Red Peach Brando cockily astride his Harley as The Wild One; James Dean, bare-chested, Estimate $10,000-15,000 PHILLIPS de PURY & COMPANY 450 WEST 15 STREET NEW YORK NY 10011 PHILLIPS de PURY & COMPANY exuding rawness, arrogance and testosterone; a dusty, trail-weary John Wayne sporting his signature neck kerchief and broad-rimmed cowboy hat; Humphrey Bogart in his trademark white dinner jacket (a masterpiece of dramatic shadow and attitude), and so many others. Frank Worth’s Luxury Collectors Portfolio, 1939-1958, estimated at $12,000 – 18,000. Subjects in the photograph include all-time icons and legends who have come to symbolize timeless Hollywood glamour, such as Jane Russell, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean, Wiliiam Holden, Cary Grant, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Dennis Hopper and Jane Wyman, amongst others. Herman Makkink’s ,,, “Rocking Machine” kinetic sculpture, 1969, estimated at $20,000-25,000. Featured in Stanley Kubrick’s film A Clockwork Orange , the “Rocking Machine” was not designed especially for the film. Rather, it formed part of Makkink’s studio work at the time, and, after seeing them, Kubrick decided to use them for the film for their futuristic look. Movements of the late Frank Worth sixties and early seventies, including Pop Art and the sexual revolution, had Luxury Collectors Portfolio, 1939-1958 influenced Makkink’s designs. Estimate $12,000 – 18,000 Mounir Fatmi’s, Ecran Noir N°1 , 2005, estimated at $30,000 – 40,000. A vast mural composition, Ecrans noirs at first glance appears to be a large-scale painting but in fact is conceived from hundreds of VHS cassettes. These cassettes, in a departure from their characteristic usage, are transformed into decorative elements, creating a work that rings back to the geometric compositions of concrete or minimalist art. In accordance with these principals, the elements of motif repetition and the economy of means are prevalent throughout the work. However, what makes both the artist and the work so strong is the direct challenge Ecrans noirs brings to the basis of concrete art, namely that art should not symbolize or represent anything further than what we see. The work comments on the power of images, from ones we have seen to ones we only think we have seen, from images we are shown to those that we interpret. The semiotic value of this wall of objects (and Herman Makkink hidden images) is compounded by the fact that media images can often be “Rocking Machine” kinetic sculpture, 1969 visual decoys. This powerful work serves to reinforce the artist’s inquiry into Estimate $20,000-25,000 the degree of reality and the level of truth found in each individual image. Following the success of a selection of works by Dennis Hopper offered in our May Contemporary Art sales from the collection of Halsey Minor, and in anticipation of the upcoming Dennis Hopper retrospective to be held at LA MOCA this summer, we are pleased to offer several strong representative works by the late, great actor and artist, including Willie Thomas , 1965, and News is Daily Again , 1963, each estimated at $7,000 – 9,000. • METHOD to the MADNESS of JERRY LEWIS” – by Mansfield Avenue Productions –
ABOUT “METHOD TO THE MADNESS OF JERRY LEWIS” – by Mansfield Avenue Productions – This film showcases the greatest American comedic genius ever: Jerry Lewis. Jerry is a comedian, actor, film producer, writer, film director, singer, humanitarian, professor, and soon to be a musical theater director. This project is unlike all other documentaries, not only because of Jerry’s uniqueness; it also revolves around his life today while taking a look back at his unparalleled past. At the age of eighty-five, this living legend is as vital now as he has ever been. The Film The film is grounded in the present from start to finish (looking back at his life and career when appropriate). We have pulled from our arsenal of over 50 hours of brand new and original 23.976 fps /1080p HD footage, specifically shot for this project, to explore the life of this comedy superstar from a fresh and unexpected perspective. The foundation of the film consists of recent milestones currently taking place in Jerry’s life. Our filmmaking technique allows the audience to seamlessly look back at his illustrious career without ever breaking the contemporary flow. By incorporating interviews with today’s hottest stars and directors of film, stage and television, one quickly learns of the major impact that Jerry has had, not only on Hollywood, but the entire world. Film Topics Martin & Lewis In 1946, when Jerry Lewis teamed up with a young crooner named Dean Martin, the face of entertainment was forever changed. By ad-libbing together, improvising insults and jokes, squirting seltzer water, and creating a general atmosphere of zaniness, their partnership dominated show business for ten years.

  • FILM POSTER CENSORSHIP by Maurizio Cesare Graziosi
FILM POSTER CENSORSHIP by Maurizio Cesare Graziosi The first decade of the twentieth century was the golden age of Italian cinema: more than 500 cinema theatres in the country, with revenues of 18 million lire. However, the nascent Italian “seventh art” had to immediately contend with morality, which protested against the “obsolete vulgarity of the cinema”. Thus, in 1913 the Giolitti government set up the Ufficio della Revisione Cinematografica (Film Revision Office). Censorship rhymes with dictatorship. However, during the twenty years of Italian Fascism, censorship was not particularly vigorous. Not out of any indulgence on the part of the black-shirted regime, but more because self-censorship is much more powerful than censorship. Therefore, in addition to the existing legislation, the Testo Unico delle Leggi di Pubblica Sicurezza (Consolidation Act on Public Safety Laws - R.D. 18 June 1931, n° 773) was sufficient. And so, as far as film poster censorship is concerned, the first record dates from the period immediately after the Second World War, in spring 1946, due to the censors’ intervention in posters for the re-release of La cena delle beffe (1942) by Alessandro Blasetti, and Harlem (1943) by Carmine Gallone. In both cases, it was ordered that the name of actor Osvaldo Valenti be removed, and for La cena delle beffe, the name of actress Luisa Ferida too. Osvaldo Valenti had taken part in the Social Republic of Salò and, along with Luisa Ferida, he was sentenced to death and executed on 30 April 1945. This, then, was a case which could be defined as a “censorship of purgation”.

The Original Bombshell: A Tribute to Jane Russell By Katie Sirles SPECIAL FOR FILMS FOR TWO© My Path and My Detours Jane Russell with a copy of her memoir (1995) Photo Credit: Schnatmeyer/picture-alliance/dpa/NewsCom Jane Russell began making waves in the film industry the moment she entered it. She signed a seven-year contract with Howard Hughes who immediately wanted to show off his newest gem. He did so in a way that would go down in cinematic history. By showcasing the buxom figure of this 5-foot 7-inch woman, he lit a fire under Hollywood censorship. His first film starring Jane Russell, The Outlaw, was completed in 1941 but did not show to the public until 1943. Howard Hughes had Jane in revealing outfits throughout the film and the Hollywood censors would only okay a limited release in 1943. The film finally had a general release in 1946. Between making The Outlaw and its general release, Russell made a name for herself in Hollywood. Born Ernestine Jane Geraldine Russell in Bemidji, Minnesota, Russell died in Santa Maria, California due to respiratory failure. Russell married three times. Her first husband was Bob Waterfield. The two adopted three children together, but divorced in 1968. Her second husband was Roger Barrett. They met in Chicago, Illinois when they worked together in a stage show called Here Today. They married shortly after meeting in 1968. Barrett died of a heart attack later that year. Russell was quoted as saying “Everybody tells me to 'stay busy.' He was only 47 and strong as an ox.

I like to think that this book goes to 11. All previous studies of Tashlin’s work operate under the assumption that, because he worked in both animation and live-action, Tashlin made cartoons that “anticipate” his live- action features, and that his live-action features are somehow “cartoony.” My book disputes this claim as too simplistic, taking a historical/aesthetic approach to understanding Tashlin’s films. I use several new contexts instead: • Vaudeville history and aesthetics • Economic and censorship policies of the film industry • Performative styles in mid-century Hollywood • Sexual comedy and social satire Within the last 18 months, I have also published articles and delivered talks on a wide range of subjects within film and media studies.
