We Are Honored to Have Mr. William Wellman Jr. to Share His Memories and Life with His Legendary Father at the Screening A TRIBUTE TO KAYE BALLARD - SATURDAY, APRIL 13 AT 6:00PM Tiburon International Film Festival proudly holds a tribute in honor of the great comedian, singer, actress, and television star Kaye Ballard, whose career has spanned eight decades. We salute Kaye and pay our homage with a documentary, Kaye Ballard–the Show Goes On!, covering her distinguished career, directed by Dan Wingate, who will be present at the screening. A TRIBUTE TO WILLIAM WELLMAN - SUNDAY, APRIL 14 AT 6:00PM Tiburon International Film Festival will pay homage to the legendary director, William Wellman, whose filmmaking career spanned nearly four decades, and left a special mark in the history of American cinema. We salute this distinguished director with his A Star is Born, which has been made several times since 1937, but it still holds its originality and cinematic importance, making the generation after generation to make their own version. We are honored to have Mr. William Wellman Jr. to share his memories and life with his legendary father at the screening MARIN FILMMAKERS - MONDAY, APRIL 15 AT 8:00PM Staying true to its Marin roots, the Tiburon Film Festival will be showing a collection of films made by Marin County filmmakers titled Marin Filmmakers, a first program of its kind. The films that will be featured are: • Strangers at Night • Jormundur • Great American Solar Eclipse • The End • Lies and Miracles In addition to this program, Buck Run, also from Marin County, will be shown on its own showtime. The directors or subjects of these films will be present for the Q&A. BAY AREA SHOWCASE - WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17 AT 8:00PM Tiburon International Film Festival will be showing a collection of films made by the San Francisco Bay Area filmmakers titled Bay Area Showcase.     FILM POSTER CENSORSHIP by Maurizio Cesare Graziosi The first decade of the twentieth century was the golden age of Italian cinema: more than 500 cinema theatres in the country, with revenues of 18 million lire. However, the nascent Italian “seventh art” had to immediately contend with morality, which protested against the “obsolete vulgarity of the cinema”. Thus, in 1913 the Giolitti government set up the Ufficio della Revisione Cinematografica (Film Revision Office). Censorship rhymes with dictatorship. However, during the twenty years of Italian Fascism, censorship was not particularly vigorous. Not out of any indulgence on the part of the black-shirted regime, but more because self-censorship is much more powerful than censorship. Therefore, in addition to the existing legislation, the Testo Unico delle Leggi di Pubblica Sicurezza (Consolidation Act on Public Safety Laws - R.D. 18 June 1931, n° 773) was sufficient. And so, as far as film poster censorship is concerned, the first record dates from the period immediately after the Second World War, in spring 1946, due to the censors’ intervention in posters for the re-release of La cena delle beffe (1942) by Alessandro Blasetti, and Harlem (1943) by Carmine Gallone. In both cases, it was ordered that the name of actor Osvaldo Valenti be removed, and for La cena delle beffe, the name of actress Luisa Ferida too. Osvaldo Valenti had taken part in the Social Republic of Salò and, along with Luisa Ferida, he was sentenced to death and executed on 30 April 1945. This, then, was a case which could be defined as a “censorship of purgation”.

Lo avrete ormai capito, frequentando La Compagnia, ma se ci fossero ancora dubbi ecco che a gennaio vi presentiamo un programma basato per il 99% sui singoli e le loro storie. Che si tratti di M.I.A. - La cattiva ragazza della musica (dal 18 gennaio) dove la crescita dell’artista è vista in un continuo tuffo all’indietro nei bellissimi filmati di famiglia, o di Friedkin Uncut (da giovedì 24), confessionale aperto di un regista che, col sacro, ha avuto a che fare e non poco, o ancora di As Times Goes By - L’uomo che disegnava sogni incentrato su Silvano “Nano” Campeggi le cui locandine fatte a mano rappresentavano ogni volta un evento nell’evento, il centro è sempre l’essere umano. Che poi, anche quando parliamo di Santiago, Italia (da lunedì 14), stiamo in realtà vedendo il tentativo di un uomo, Nanni Moretti, di fare luce e giustizia su di un episodio spesso lasciato ai margini della Storia - quello dei rifugiati nell’ambasciata italiana a Santiago del Cile durante il golpe militare del 1973 - e quando pensiamo di andare a vedere Old Man & the Gun (in arrivo mercoledì 30 per la rassegna “Flashback - Scusate il ritardo”) stiamo compiendo un tributo a un gigante del cinema: Robert Redford. Per aprire nuove possibilità di visione ai tanti spettatori che ci hanno richiesto i doc di gennaio e per dare la possibilità a chi li ha visti e amati di rivederli, il programma nel programma di questo mese troverete alcune, gradite repliche. A partire da “La regina di Casetta” di Francesco Fei (dal 3 al 5), “Santiago, Italia” di Nanni Moretti (dal 3 al 9), “Una donna poco più di un nome” (l’8, il 10 e il 14), “Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist” (da giovedì 21) per finire con “As Time Goes By - L’uomo che disegnava sogni” dedicato a Nano Campeggi (dal 3). Non mancheranno ovviamente le novità, prima fra tutte il Festival del cinema russo contemporaneo (dal 16 al 18), una rassegna promossa dal N.I.C.E.. Tra i nuovi film “Libero” di Michel Toesca (da lunedì 4), girato nella Val Roia, contesa tra Italia e Francia, dove ogni giorno decine di migranti cercando superare il confine alla ricerca di una vita migliore. Sempre i migranti protagonisti di “Dove bisogna stare” di Daniele Gaglianone e Stefano Collizzolli: quattro storie di donne, di diversa provenienza, impegnate da volontarie ad accogliere giovani e famiglie arrivate in Italia per sfuggire agli orrori dei paesi di provenienza. Proseguono gli appuntamenti di fiction con “Flashback - Scusate il ritardo” ( “Ben is Back”, “Van Gogh - Sulla soglia dell’eternità”, “Ride” e “Colette” i titoli del mese) e si rinnova, diventando appuntamento fisso del fine settimana, la sezione “bimbi” con due film da non perdere: “Gli incredibili 2” sabato 9 e domenica 10, “Smallfoot - Il mio amico delle nevi” sabato 23 febbraio alle ore 17.00.
