Terr–3 Special-Status Plant Populations
TERR–3 SPECIAL-STATUS PLANT POPULATIONS 1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY During 2001 and 2002, the review of existing information, agency consultation, vegetation community mapping, and focused special-status plant surveys were completed. Based on California Native Plant Society’s (CNPS) Electronic Inventory of Rare and Endangered Vascular Plants of California (CNPS 2001a), CDFG’s Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB; CDFG 2003), USDA-FS Regional Forester’s List of Sensitive Plant and Animal Species for Region 5 (USDA-FS 1998), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Species List (USFWS 2003), and Sierra National Forest (SNF) Sensitive Plant List (Clines 2002), there were 100 special-status plant species initially identified as potentially occurring within the Study Area. Known occurrences of these species were mapped. Vegetation communities were evaluated to locate areas that could potentially support special-status plant species. Each community was determined to have the potential to support at least one special-status plant species. During the spring and summer of 2002, special-status plant surveys were conducted. For each special-status plant species or population identified, a CNDDB form was completed, and photographs were taken. The locations were mapped and incorporated into a confidential GIS database. Vascular plant species observed during surveys were recorded. No state or federally listed special-status plant species were identified during special- status plant surveys. Seven special-status plant species, totaling 60 populations, were identified during surveys. There were 22 populations of Mono Hot Springs evening-primrose (Camissonia sierrae ssp. alticola) identified. Two populations are located near Mammoth Pool, one at Bear Forebay, and the rest are in the Florence Lake area. -

Datwyler 2* 1 Quantitative and Systems Biology Program, University of California, Merced, CA, USA, 2 Department of Biological Sciences, California State University, Sacramento, CA, USA Polyploidy plays a major role in the evolution of angiosperms with multiple paleopolyploid events having been suggested making it plausible that all angiosperms have a polyploid event in their history. Polyploidy can arise by genome duplication within a species (i.e., autopolyploidy), or whole genome duplication coupled with hybridization (i.e., allopolyploidy). Penstemon subsection Saccanthera contains a species complex of closely related diploids and polyploids. The species in this complex are P. heterophyllus Edited by: (2x, 4x), P. parvulus (4x), P. neotericus (8x), P. laetus (2x), and P. azureus (6x). The Insects That Visit Penstemon Flowers Sarah Kimball Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721 Paul Wilson Department of Biology, California State University, Northridge, CA 91330-8303 The shape and color of penstemon flowers are the result of adaptations to attract pollinators. Diverse flower types reflect differences in animal pollinators. For about four-fifths of penstemon species (the ones with white, blue, or purple flowers), the principal pollinators are bees and the wasp Pseudomasaris vespoides. The remaining fifth of penstemon species have red or pink flowers adapted to hummingbird pollination, with some of these also retaining the bees as co-pollinators. In addition to the animals that the flowers seem adapted to, there are a number of other insects that sometimes visit penstemon flowers, such as the long-tongued flies called Oligodranes. There are also many generalist flower visitors occasionally observed on penstemons, such as hawkmoths. The hummingbirds visiting penstemon can be identified with field guides, but the insect visitors are usually more difficult because there are many more insect species and few field guides mention the flowers visited by each species. The goal of this article is to introduce some of the major groups of insects commonly observed visiting penstemon flowers (see photographs in Plate 9). Animal pollinators visit flowers to gather food in the form of nectar, pollen, or both. Michener INTRODUCTION Keckiella Straw (Scrophulariaceae) is a genus of seven species of facul tatively drought-deciduous, Jong-lived woody shrubs widespread but only locally common in the cismontane and desert mountains of California (in cluding the Channel Islands) and adjacent Nevada, Arizona, and Baja Cal ifornia. All seven species are native to and centered in the California Flo ristic Province; two species have disjunct populations in desert ranges well outside this province (Keck 1936; Raven and Axelrod 1978). The genus is distinctive in consisting of strongly woody shrubs 0.5-3 m tall (an anomalous feature in the essentially herbacious Scrophulariaceae) and in having ra diated into a wide variety of plant communities over a considerable geo graphic and elevational range. The species range from rocky sites in the northern Sonoran and Mojave Deserts (K. antirrhinoides ssp-. microphylla) to openings in mixed-evergreen forests in the Coast Ranges and the Klamath Mountains (K. corymbosa); the elevational span is from near sea-level (K. -
