Mitxelena «Rsbelais euskaldu­ na» deitu zutenekin ez ezik, Berpizkundeko gizontzat hartu zutenekin ere ez dator bat, inprentaganako sentitu zuen lehia gartsuan bakarrik omen delako garai horretakoa. Julio Urkixok eta, batez ere, Schuchardtek zinezko poe­ tak behar dituen dohainetatik urrun ikusten duten bitartean, Gil Reicher andrea eta Mitxelena arras beste iritziko dira. Lehenaren hitzak dira hauek: «Ces poésies sont empreintes d'un Iyrisme, d'une passion, d'une force, que I'eskuara retrouvera rarement. Et je ne crois pas que ce soit un paradoxe de dire que notre premier poéte basque est peut-étre le plus grand 5». Donibane Garazin edo inguruan sorturik, bere euskalki sortaldeko be­ henafarreraz baliatu zen; herri xeheak erabiltzen zuen bezalaxe baliatu, ordea, fonetikako bere berezitasunak ere euskara batuaren faboretan ez bada, euskara xahutuarenean bederen batere ukitu gabe. «Tampoco pue­ de olvidarse», idatzi zuen Mitxelenak, «el carácter popular, natural por así decirlo, de la lengua de Dechepare 7». Haren liburuko kantu guziak lau zatitan banatu ohi dira bere gaiaren arabera: erlijiozko bi, amodiozko hamar, libertatea goratzen duen bat eta euskara goraipatzeko bi azkenak. Zenbaitek Lafonekin uste dute izan zela agian lehenago beste edizio koskorrago bat, erabat galdua; hori pentsa­ razten baitu beste zantzu gehiagoren artean kantu multzo baten eta beste­ aren grafia ezberdinak, garai diferenteagatik baizik ezin izan daitekeenak. BASQUE LITERATURE Before going on, we would like to point out that when talking about Basque Literature we are referring to the literature written in Basque. This differentiation deserves clarification since literature written in the Basque language has not provided – neither has the language that supports it, Euskara – the exclusive and complete literary expression of Basque reality. As Jesús María Lasagabaster rightly notes (Lasagabaster 2002), as well as the literature written in Basque there is Basque literature written in both Spanish and French, identifiable by the Basque origin of the authors who wrote it, by their subjects, and even by the presence of a singular worldview that may be said to be Basque. This is why Lasagabaster talks about “the literatures of the Basques”, and although it is true that, from a comparative point of view, most literatures are compared in terms of the language in which they are expressed rather than in terms of the author’s nationality (Guillén, 1998), the truth is that only recently has Basque literary historiography opted for a post-national approach, i.e. an approach that takes into account literature written by Basques in their various languages (Gabilondo, 2006). The question is whether such an approach, appealing as it would be in terms of overcoming the inertia in Basque literary historiography, may lead to a historiographical approach that actually exceeds the limits established by each of the Basque literary systems (the Basque, Spanish and French ones, for example).

Uribe achieved literary recognition and public notoriety within the Iberian cultural landscape with the publication of his novel Bilbao-New York-Bilbao in 2008, for which he received the Spanish National Literature Prize for Narrative in the following year.

    E uskara Language and History The Basque Country can be found in the south- east of Europe straddling part of France and Spain. Sociolinguistic Its northern-most borders are the Landes and status Bearne regions of France and the Bay of Biscay. To the south it borders on the Rioja and Zaragoza, to the east Bearne, Huesca and Zaragoza and to the Language policy west Cantabria, Burgos and the Rioja. It covers a surface area of 20,864 km2 and has a total population of 2,876,879. Legal status Basque and French are spoken in that part of the Basque Country which is in France and Basque and Spanish are spoken in the part of the Basque Country which is in Spain. C atalà G alego Cymraeg Elsässisch Euskara Language and History Sociolinguistic status Sancho The Wise Language policy defined the Basque language as a "lingua navarrorum" Legal status (1167) The Basque Country is currently divided up into seven different provinces or administrative territories: Lapurdi, Basse-Navarre and Zuberoa in the French part of the Basque Country, which account for a total of 249,275 inhabitants of the total population (according to the 1990 census) and the rest in the Basque Autonomous Community (comprised of Alava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa) with 2,104,041 inhabitants (according to the 1991 census) and the region of Navarre with 523,563 inhabitants (1991census). According to data from the II Sociolinguistic Survey of 1996, 26.4% of the population is Basque-speaking in the French Basque Country, 25.3% in the Basque Autonomous Community whilst in the region of Navarre it is only 9.6%.

And, indeed, the corpus of Basque oral literature—all sung poetry—is voluminous and its topics wide- ranging. Consisting of ballads, war songs, funeral dirges, and verbal ritual improvisation (“bertsolaritza”), Basque oral literature addresses religion and history, daily life, illness and death, politics and relationships (Aulestia 1995). Historically, oral literature has been an important conduit of Basque language and culture, as most of the Basque population remained illiterate well into the 19th century. However, it is almost exclusively men who have been allowed to thus opine through song. While historically women were hired to improvise dirges honoring the dead at funerals, a law prohibiting the practice was passed in 1452 (Aulestia 1995: 69). A similar law was passed against profazadas, women who went from town to town “invent[ing] couplets and ballads with the intention of defamatory libel” (Ibid).

Prehistory, history, geography, economy, and much more are presented in this slender little volume. Included alongside the seminal translation by Mikel Morris Pagoeta is a comparative rendition of the original Basque. The book also includes a foreword by Pello Salaburu, the preface to the edition by Patxi Altuna, and an introduction by Beñat Oyharçabal. Other people thought it could not be written; now they have seen that they were wrong.
