LOYOLA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO SCHOOL OF LAW Annual Report 2007-08 MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Dear Alumni and Friends: As we mark our first 100 years of excellence in legal education, Loyola University Chicago School of Law has much to celebrate. With the support of alumni and friends, the law school is enjoying significant momentum, expanding our curriculum, programs, and initiatives to meet the needs of tomorrow’s law students in a changing legal market. In this report, you’ll read about the many successes of the past year, including new gifts to establish endowed chairs in advocacy and child law and a professorship in business law. We’ve launched a unique online MJ degree program in health law. Our international study programs now include a new summer program in Beijing. With the creation of a new position of director of public service programs, we’ve streamlined and improved the accessibility of the public service and public interest initiatives for which Loyola is known. Our students continue to excel in mock trial and moot court competitions. And several new professors broaden the expertise of our dedicated and distinctive faculty. We congratulate the newest group of Loyola lawyers. Even in a tough economy, Loyola law graduates are enjoying a high rate of employment. Snapshot OF ENTERING Class We have again enrolled an outstanding first-year class. This year, the School of Law received 3,761 applications for the full-time division and 551 for the part-time division. We have become one of the 50 most selective law schools in the country. Our students are bright, talented, diverse, and committed to serving justice. John D. Cooney (JD ’79), Robert J. Cooney Jr. (JD ’78), and Kevin J. Conway (JD ’76) have donated $1.5 million to create this new faculty position. Law School Receives Gift to Establish Chair in Child Law The School of Law recently received a $2 million gift from law alumnus Bernard Beazley (LLB ’50) to establish a fully endowed chair in children’s law to honor his wife, Kathleen. Civitas ChildLaw Center Director and Professor of Law Diane Geraghty has been named OTHER AREAS OF Focus the first A. Kathleen Beazley Chair in ChildLaw. Geraghty, a member of the Loyola law faculty since 1977 and cofounder of the Civitas ChildLaw Center, is a national leader in child law teaching, research, service, and policy. Institute for Consumer Antitrust Studies Cy Pres Award to Fund Loyola Antitrust Efforts International Law Programs Loyola’s Institute for Consumer Antitrust Studies received a $1.5 million cy pres award Summer Program in Beijing Expands International Study Options this year in connection with the settlement of a Tennessee state court class action suit Loyola’s international study programs deepen students’ understanding of transnational involving price fixing claims in the rubber chemical industry.
