elcome to our November/ WDecember magazine, #256. This issue seems full of articles about members taking their cars on various tours and rallies – long may it continue! As well as keeping the Exchequer happy with increased tax receipts from all our petrol purchases, it also allows the public to see the cars in action, as well as hear them. And we do need to drive them as much as possible (which the cars seem to prefer anyway); many people haven’t seen a Jensen for many years – if ever. For once a much-travelled FF – pictured at John O’ Groats Along with David and Jane Turnage (541), and George and Sue on our recent Haggis Trail tour of Scotland Hamill (541), we took our FF on a 2000 mile tour of Scotland (the Haggis Trail) via the Highlands and Islands for two weeks; a wonderful The JOC has always claimed it is the “friendly” club, and recently experience indeed. Some very interesting classic cars came along too; this was illustrated in full. An elderly gentleman had written to our hopefully a full report in the next magazine. However, returning to the Membership Secretary to finally cancel his membership after many theme of many people not seeing a Jensen for years, the cars were years. He’d had to give up driving because his vision had deteriorated all queued up to board the CalMac ferry from Tobermory to Kilchoan; too much. He’d always wanted (but never been able to own) a Jensen, and it was our turn to drive slowly and gingerly down the slipway and nor had he ever ridden in one. He wondered if anyone in the club up the ramp onto the ferry. But we were stopped in mid descent by would be kind enough to take him out for a ride in one? Needless to the CalMac loading master. “That’s an FF!” he said delightedly, “I had say, the members have responded, and he is being taken out for the a picture of one on my bedroom wall when I was a teenager – it was day in a very nice Interceptor indeed – enough said! always my dream car. But I’ve never seen one in the flesh. Would you mind waiting a minute while I take a photo of it?” How could I refuse, Christmas will soon be upon us, and thoughts might be turning to though I was acutely aware that we all needed to board the ferry pdq presents – may I advise that the Regalia Secretary is open for business? as we were island hopping to another ferry later that day... Finally, I’d like to wish all our readers and advertisers a Happy This magazine also contains quite a few articles about new JOC Christmas and prosperous New Year, and to thank you all for your members and their cars; it’s very encouraging to find enthusiasm for support throughout the year. the marque is undimmed, and that younger people too are joining our club. My apologies too for some of your articles not appearing in this issue of the magazine; due to space constraints I’ve had to hold them over to the Jan/Feb issue. Paul

A further view from the bridge ...

ell, it’s that time again to Wput my thoughts down as to how I see things are in the world of Jensens. So where do I start? Firstly, Christmas Greetings and a prosperous New Year to all - even though as I write this it is only just October!

The great Jensen extravaganza to eastern Europe has been and gone. I suppose I speak for all that were there. WOW! Massive thanks to Jens and Joerg and their team, for what was a full-on weekend (plus), and such an enlightening time with new friends and brilliant scenery, and a trip into Czech.

The enthusiasm for driving events does not seem to be abating. I can only cite the support for the Saxony trip and the potential follow up in On the recent Saxony trip at 80 mph... Germany and Switzerland next year, the recent Devon tour, the Irish (give or take the needle flicker!) trip and of course the minor trip across the pond to the USA! With regard to future events, the Spring Break has now been confirmed It’s NEC time again, and we will be (or will have depending on when for 2-4 March 2018 at the Marsh Farm Hotel just outside Royal you read this) exhibited again at Britain’s premier classic car show. Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire. Further details to follow. As I said in the last magazine….no Interceptor but I did cheat a bit if you know what I mean. Next year, it is 80 years since The Open Day is arranged for Sunday 15th April at RAF Cosford Limited first exhibited at Earls Court. So, hopefully, we will have at Museum near Wolverhampton off the M54 with free entry and parking. least one car from that show on our stand. Watch this space... Hopefully, a Question and Answer session will take place with former Jensen Motors Limited personnel. (The idea is to record for posterity In parallel with this, various Jensens appear to be emerging from some of the stories and tales of what actually went on at JML back in places they were condemned to many years ago, to see the light of the day. More details to follow soon). day for the first time in a while. Whist this should be seen as a good thing, I do think that there is a need for some form of reality check The International will be held at Great Malvern in the Abbey Hotel 22nd to be undertaken as to the viability and ultimate costs/affordability – 24th June 2018. Again, more details to follow soon; but note that associated with some of these projects. family rooms will be available!

On another note, from January 2018, the JOC will Shaun’s Interceptor by a coach of the have a representative in Australia. Tony Cope is Saxon Steam railway Co. in Germany returning home to OZ (with work) and has kindly offered his services to be the Club’s representative down under. Thanks Tony.

So finally, I wish you all happy and stress-free Jensen motoring and restoration and see you all in the New Year if not before.

And oh yes, my wheel nuts are still tight!

e love auto jumbles, antique markets and boot sales. You know: rummaging through piles of miscellany in search of Wtreasure. We’re never looking for anything in particular, really; though, come to think of it, a long-lost Van Gogh or even a little stash of gold Sovereigns would actually be quite nice. But in reality, to us it simply is the thrill of not knowing what you’ll find. Except when we visit Beaulieu. That’s an entirely different ballgame...

We take our annual pilgrimage to Europe’s largest open air classic Pretty similar to 12 months before and 365 days before that. Having car autojumble quite seriously. And that’s not just because we live more retro enamels than wall space and more chairs in the dining 1,200kms and a big splash of water away from Baron Montagu’s room than our table can accommodate, we decided to do things a luscious home; it’s more than that. For instance, we start prepping our little differently this year. Beaulieu Search List months in advance. New door card lining and an exhaust clamp for the C-V8. A better wheel for our, newly Rare clean-up mania acquired, W124 Merc 300E-24. And, against better judgement, the What we did was rent our own little stall space. You see, this idea chrome bonnet flap surround for our 541. Et cetera; the list we draw kicked off last February when I had a, rare, stroke of garage clean-up up every year is sheer endless, not even counting the local produce mania. Which resulted in a whole pile of bits & bobs I knew I’d never such as brown sauce and baked beans we’re asked to take back for use again. our fellow Dordogneshireians of Brexit origin. I’d already thrown a truckload into the bin because a) I hadn’t a clue Differently, this year what it was or what it was supposed to do or b) the ‘thing’ was Of course, our success rate on oldtimer parts is about the same so rusted it had turned into an unrecognisable brown lump, or c) each year: zero, give or take a few stainless nuts ‘n bolts or chrome because I knew for sure it was faulty and had no idea why I kept it windscreen wipers. On our way back from that little island on the on the shelf for this long. But what remained, I thought, was quite a other side of de divide, our car usually is filled with anything but what nice collection of useful parts, no doubt of interest to other classic we had jotted down on our search list. Last year, we came home car lovers. And thus we decided to sell the stuff at Beaulieu, on our with a monster size garage jack, of Chinese origin and leaking as one own stand. We were quite excited about the prospect, to be honest, should have known, a couple of (new) oil advertising signs and a and were actually looking forward to the droves of visitors fighting for pair of Edwardian chairs. Yes, all bought at Beaulieu. And that was it. a piece of the automobile heritage we’d gathered for this purpose.

8 The interweb again The single stall with The funny thing is that, when you have your own little stall, you’re Jensen paraphernalia able to observe the visitors from an entirely different angle than when you’re roaming through the stalls yourselves. And since our little enterprise turned out not to attract much attention at all, we had ample time to do so. That’s how we found out that the Beaulieu Autojumble no longer is the place to look for parts for your classic wheels project. Instead, it’s slowly morphed into just another boot sale or flea market. Really. We’ve seen visitors walking around with antique prams, tatty suitcases, old clocks and even a gentleman with a blow-up Dolly carelessly carrying it/her on his shoulder. I saw one guy schlepping a stripped V8 engine block to the exit and asked him what kind of car it was for. He had no idea. He’d bought it to make a table out of it, “just like the one on the old Top Gear, you know”. Sure, some visitors were walking around with an alternator, a bunch of tools or a new exhaust, but they were few and far between. They could have bought these just as easily, probably easier – and cheaper – on the interweb. I fear the, now annoyingly omnipresent, world-wide-web shopping possibilities is currently drowning the 400 or so parts that actually do interest us. are now also slowly killing this great institution called auto jumble. So off go the OBDII diagnostic scanners – I’d like to see the first Jensen owner use this to his advantage – the 3D Superman, Spiderman and Useless paraphernalia Batman badges as well as the ridiculous Super Loud 7 Trumpet Air We all know that eBay has become, by far, the #1 source for parts Horns and the Flurry Pink steering wheel covers. and accessories; the Jensen ‘vehicle parts & accessories’ category on eBay alone counts no less than 7,345 items. ow come I ended up driving the Targa Florio Classica with my Interceptor ? On my list of Classic Car events, Hthe Targa Florio was an open position. All those memories of the ‘70s and all those stories about Porsche’s legendary wins still at the back of my mind...

When I again looked at the list last fall, I started investigating the into a first league rally event. The original roads were on my mind, challenge. It turned out that 2017 would be the 101st running of with the circuito grande delle Madonie taking 92 miles and the more what is considered to be one of the oldest car races in the world, famous circuito piccolo delle Madonie still 45 miles for a single lap. first held in 1906. Until 1973 it had been for 15 years part of the World Championship for sports cars, then it was held as a national The 101st running seemed to give a fair chance for a non-Italian to race competition, but with an average speed of 81 miles/hr. qualify. On top, I remembered Alberto Fabbro, who had been such an (Red Bull’s Dr. Helmut Marko in an Alfa Romeo at the time); it had enthusiastic supporter for getting the Turin drive done, and I have to become way too fast for the local roads. Since then it has developed again to thank him for helping me with the administration. Most likely it would have worked in English, but of course it always works more smoothly if you have local intelligence in support. But how to get Infront of the Teatro Massimo there? It turned out that from Villach to Genova, which offers a 21 hrs. direct ferry service to Palermo, it is a mere 400 miles, a good warm up drive after winter. In December I had taken my car in desperation to Villach to have Matthias Kollinger sort out somewhat serious issues (like the automatic roof). After having run the Hamburg service shop for about 30 years, Matthias has settled in his home town of Villach and is today still enthusiastic to resolve issues for which you really have to know the car inside out. I am seriously wondering who will be able to repair our cars from experience in 10 years’ time?

So, how did it go? In a field of Fiats and Alfa Romeos, the 1975 Interceptor was in fact the youngest entrant, earning a lot of curiosity from the crowds. People dug their nose closely to the emblem to read out “Jensen”. More than once I was asked whether it had four wheel drive, and many times we heard “che macchina bellissima!”

14 En route – note the apparent wilderness and quiet on the 30 miles of mountain roads, and practically no traffic

So what is it like today? It is a Palermo-centered event, with three Segesta, also including some nice mountain stretches and a great competitions happening in parallel. There still is the modern rally drive along the Mediterranean sea. that is part of the Italian championship, there is also what they call a “Ferrari tribute” with about 30 big size contemporary Ferrari’s driving All in all a great drive through Sicily which the Jensen stood up to the same route as we did, and finally there were about 65 participants nicely. Of course one has to always remember that one is not sitting in a high caliber field of classic cars, amongst others a 1925 Tatra, in a tiny Alfa Romeo, so relax and take it easy. On the day after the an original entry at the time. And it comprises a lot of driving. After event, after returning via Civitavecchia, I drove about 625 miles to the presentation of the field on Piazza Verdi in Palermo on Thursday Southern Germany in about 13 hours, all together having covered afternoon we drove about 160 miles to the other side of the island to more than 2.500 miles since leaving Villach 10 days earlier. Once up reach the official start at Taormina for next morning. Which was the and running there are only the regular gas station visits that stop you... start of a real busy and long day again, that finished only after about 210 miles and more than 10 hrs. of driving in Palermo the following night. But we were nicely compensated, crossing Sicily via Nova d’ Sicilia including the beauty of 30 miles of mountain roads without Christof von Branconi passing any village and practically without traffic.

The second day was then focused on the classical Targa Florio roads, At the finish line or what at least are their remainders today. Half of circuito piccolo delle Madonie has been severely damaged by floods and has not been reconstructed, although money has been made available by the beloved EU. But the remaining stretches of about 25 miles that had been used for this year’s event were among the most exciting routes that I have ever driven, what a great track in an unbelievable landscape! The day finished up with a visit to the original pits, and of course the old man was also there: Mr. Nino Vaccarella, the Sicilian hero of the Targa Florio paid his visit - still going strong at more than 80 years of age. And in true Italian style all evenings were celebrated in some stylish palace.

The final day started again from Palermo and took us to some scenic spots: to the Cathedral of Monreale and to the Archeological park of

My Jensen Interceptor Journey

y Jensen story begins with the sale of my 1948 Alvis My money was starting to burn a hole in my pocket, but luckily it did MDuncan (TA14) and the search for my next classic car. not take long before Dave called to tell me of a possible Interceptor This time I wanted something easier to drive, especially from Mk II that might be for sale, (albeit the owner had considered selling a braking point of view, as the Alvis had rod and did the car before having owned it for 34 years, only to take it for a drive not stop well, thus limiting its usability. and then change his mind).

So I decided to look for something from the 1960s – 1970s with What sold me on the car, was that Dave commented that if he was style, power, good brakes, automatic and more useable. It was not in a position to buy the car he would “buy it at the drop of a hat”, long before I started to focus on Jensens. It was also due to my friend, which was good enough for me. I also learnt that the current owner David Wright, our area rep for South Downs, whose enthusiasm for had owned the car for 34 years and spent a considerable amount of the Jensen marque goes without saying. It was David who suggested money on the engine and bodywork, meaning that many of the normal I join the club. problems Interceptors have, had already been dealt with. This was November 2016, but due to various factors it took six months until the The more I researched and compared Jensens to other similar makes, deal was done and I became the new owner of a Jensen Interceptor the more I became hooked. Then it was a case of which model, as I Mark II registration VOC 373H in April 2017. liked them all. Finally I decided on the Interceptor, but then which one the Mark I, II or III? In the end it was more a case of what was available, I have had to do a few immediate jobs – a new core for the radiator what condition and what price. I did narrow it down a bit, as the FF and and a leaking fuel tank both needed attention. I then found that there SP were out of my price bracket. are not many companies that are willing to weld fuel tanks for obvious reasons. This taught me a lesson, get a recommendation first, as the Through the club I was given so much help from various members, cost was excessive! Other than small jobs, to satisfy my personal such as Alan Smith – Technical Adviser for Interceptors, Dave Barnett preferences, such as to fit door mirrors, new seat belts, etc., the – FF Registrar and many others. Dave Barnett kindly came out with me car has fulfilled all my hopes. For spare parts I have found Andy at to view cars for sale, most of which he said were not suitable. In the Appleyard’s, very helpful. end he said he would look out for one for me, if I was prepared to wait.

18 Hopefully this winter I will have a new interior fitted. Although the original interior has lots of patina, it looks very tired and has already Help put the brakes been coloured once. The debate as to patina, or the pleasure of a new interior, will I am sure rage for many a year. One other area of debate on prostate cancer is the age of tyres and their safety after 10 years. In checking mine I on prostate cancer discovered that they were 16 years old and the spare 26 years old; Organise a drive with your club so we can beat a you could not even press your thumb nail into the rubber, it was rock Organise a drive with your club so we can beat a hard. Needless to say, I decided to change all five tyres – if only for disease that kills more than 11,000 men a year my piece of mind.

I am now trying to build up the car’s already extensive history file and again I have to thank various members of the club that have either helped, or steered me in the right direction. One such steer was in the direction of Martin Robey, who have the original factory files from when Jensen went out of business. Having contacted them and paid a nominal fee, they sent me copies of a comprehensive file of documents with some interesting information.

There are a couple of annoying things I am trying to resolve, again with the help of club members. Firstly, the car had a different registration number prior to 1978, which the DVLA have not been able to provide me with any information upon. Secondly, the DVLA V5 has a different chassis number to the specification plate on the car, which I have been able to confirm is correct...

Well that’s my Jensen story so far, and I am looking forward to going to For more information contact [email protected] more information contact many shows and events, to proudly show off my pride and joy. S axony. S axony ? S axony!

en years ago, in 2007, we held a meeting in Saarburg with a good 30 cars (see ‘Jensen’ magazine #196, p 20) and the Tfamous ‘Cuvée Jensen’ sparkling wine. It had been the largest Jensen event in Germany for a very long time. I was asked a few times in the past if there would be a second event similar to that one.

When we first came up with the idea of a ‘Ten years after’, our plan rooms, the rest were already booked for a wedding. A few weeks later was to hold it in the Eifel area and make the Nürburgring the center we had 90 teams willing to come so we had to look for an additional of the meeting. But since then, with a few people heavily involved in hotel. We were fortunate that the dates for the 2017 races of the the organisation having moved away from there, we had lost the much GT Masters series at the Sachsenring just around the corner were needed local base. not finalised and the Landhotel in Frankenberg promised to block 25 rooms for us. That led to the decision for Saxony to be the location for 2017 as both Jörg and myself live in Dresden now. As in Saarburg our intention was to make it a driver’s event: no concours, no polishing (well, not forbidden, but not rewarded) but sheer pleasure with driving our cars and maybe a few drinks. There was no winery available this time so we choose beer to be the main drink, thus the idea of creating ‘Fahrbier’ to join us constantly during the meeting developed

A reliability rally with tests as the main focus of the event was also quickly decided upon, and we thought that maybe 50 teams would be interested in something like that. So when I first tried to evaluate the reaction in the Forum in September 2016 I was absolutely caught by surprise – we immediately had 60 teams promising they would come; and suddenly we had a problem. With nearly a year to go it was time to find a hotel to host 120 people, not in a city centre, but of equally good quality. When we asked the Schloßhotel Lichtenwalde for the mid weekend in September 2017 we could secure 62 of the 84

Our Chairman with the prizes won by The Renaissance court inside the JOC during the last 12 months the King’s castle – behind is the Verkehrsmuseum (Museum of Transport)

Another two weeks later in December 2016 we stood at 98 teams and will get food, no matter when they arrive. Saturday, after the rally, a I was really worried. Another 15 rooms were secured as an absolute nice dinner in a great location was to form the perfect setting for the maximum. And the Sachsenring was no longer available for us to do winners’ ceremony. September normally is sunny and warm in this area some driving tests because of the GT Masters event. (at least for the past 4 years) so the decision was made to have the dinner in the Baroque Garden of the nearby Schloß Lichtenwalde. It Then the detailed planning started. Whenever you organise a meeting, took some time to convince the restaurant and the management but be it a family reunion, a company event, a gathering of weirdos, no finally they agreed. Up to 180 people could be seated and served in matter how many and which kind of people join, you have to take care the beautiful garden. of proper food and drinks. Everything can go wrong, but it will all be excused by the participants unless they are left hungry or thirsty... Next was the beer. Finding the right brewery with a nice and smooth Barbeque for the first evening (Friday) was the easiest option; people beer was more difficult than we thought but the Einsiedler Brauerei was very open to our suggestions (2.000 bottles of ‘Fahrbier’) and happy to host a test during the rallye.

Finally the rallye needed to be organised. My first idea was to do a number of tests at the Sachsenring, a fantastic race track famous for its annual Moto GP World Championship event just around the corner. In December I was told that during our weekend they are going to host the GT Masters series, so no chance to use the circuit.

We now had to find some scenic roads, a place for lunch, create a road book, add tests and regularities somewhere on the road and insure the event. It should be a pleasure for all, so a balance between experienced drivers and novices to such an event had to be found. We drove the selected roads seven times in total to make sure the road book was without any faults or mistakes. Rallye plates, polo shirts, and 2,000 bottles of beer from the Einsiedler Brauerei some gifts (bookmarks, brochures, lapel pins) from the JOC Chairman – we may need to rethink the delivery vehicle... concluded the whole package.

28 For Sunday we thought that an interesting cultural programme in 70 Jensens on top of the Fichtelberg mountain one of the most beautiful cities of Germany should be of interest for everyone, so I contacted the museums of Dresden. They were all very keen to host us and make guided tours. Inner city parking for 80- 90 cars was a problem until Jörg’s brilliant idea to use his political contacts and arrange the parking lot of the Staatskanzlei, the seat of the Saxon Prime Minister.

All was set, planned, calculated, and paid for – so let the Jensenites come. I thought I was well prepared and I could now enjoy the Goodwood Revival the weekend before the meeting. Sitting at Woodcote corner watching the practice runs on Friday morning I got a call from the restaurant saying that outdoor dinner for Saturday evening would not be possible due to the weather conditions. Indoors they only have first prize, one of the very few remaining historic bottles of the ‘2007 room for a maximum of 110 guests. But we would be 160. There was Cuvée Jensen’. no other place available, wedding parties everywhere, so on Tuesday morning after returning from Goodwood we had to organise a tent and Other prizes were presented to the best (silver medal) and the worst ask the castle owners for permission to erect it in the centre of the (bronze medal) team of the three tests, all received with pride and yard. Quite expensive due to the very short notice. laughter. Kev Birch hit the light barrier at exactly 15.00 seconds, Paul Jensen parked his car exactly in the middle of the beer crates and It all was agreed, money paid and on Thursday afternoon the first only seven teams were exactly on time at the slalom. I would like to (Swiss) participants roared into the parking lot of the hotel. From now thank Jörg, my brother Peter, Arne, Szymon, Karsten, Monika, Simon, on there was no way to stop it and so the event started with the Daniela, Arthur, Sophia and Laurence and all the others involved for first ‘Fahrbier’. I will leave other writers to describe their experiences their support; I am really looking forward to visiting at least one of the and what they think of the meeting. I was happy it all went well; no Irish, the Dutch and the Swiss events next year. accidents nor damages during the rallye, no major car trouble (only the usual hiccups, electrical, fuel and mechanical stuff) and no problem with the beer supply... 78 cars, 150 participants, 12 countries, a wide range of Jensens (541, C-V8, Interceptor, SP, FF, Coupé, Healey, GT, Jens Jansen S-V8) and a clear winner of the rallye: Liz and Sjef van de Wee won the Dresden, October 2017

En route – the cars approach the Chateau de la Rochepot

First JOC France Weekend Rally

ollowing the new start at the beginning of 2017 a small group of French members of the JOC France got together Fto organise the first ever Club Rally in France on the st1 – 2 nd of July. For the first national event it was the region of Bourgogne that was chosen, fair to say that the wonderful countryside, the fantastic wine and the fact that Fred Mary with his Jensen collection had some influence on the location decision. Seven teams made the trip, thus making history for JOC France.

The proud Jensen drivers, mostly with their partners, came from the As one could predict the Interceptor was in the majority but included local region, from the Paris area and even from New Zealand. The a wonderful orange convertible with sheepskin seats and lady driver. Paris members have started to get to know each other through local Star of the show, however, was the rare 541R of 1956 from the meetings and dinners, but it was a great occasion to meet a wider region of Reims, a regular rally car in many parts of France. Due to circle and start to form the national group. unforeseen circumstances we were also accompanied by a Facel Facellia and a Porsche 928. The weather was, let’s say, more British than French, but the pleasure of driving around the wine country, in France, with a convoy of Jensens was just incredible.

The order of the day was Franglais with a British organiser and a Kiwi couple to start, but with a rally road book totally in French. Somehow everyone made the restaurant stops on time and nobody got seriously lost. Reading a road book in kilometres with, a milometer that does not even work normally presents a challenge in any car other than a Jensen...

Following cocktails at a member’s house and dinner at a small restaurant in Beaune, Saturday morning and the ‘start engines’ advice arrived very quickly. The route took us north of Beaune, passing by the Abbey of Citeaux and Clos de Vougeot to start the day. On the forecourt of the ‘Bel-Air’ filling station

Jensen cars bought for dismantling anywhere The cars parked outside the famous Clos de Vougeot - home of the grand cru burgundy within the UK The lunch stop was fantastic, and to see all the cars squeezed into the car park was really something special in these parts. The afternoon route New and second-hand was upon varied types of rolling country roads with some possibility to open up the V8’s, but we had to be careful as the surface was still a little damp! Anyway one can always appreciate the comfort of our parts always available cars and watching the petrol gauge of course. The course took us onto the famous Urcy Hill Climb passing by the Chateau de Lamartine, and into the small town of Savigny le Beaune, where there is an incredible 30 Dorset Road • Bexhill-on-Sea private Abarth collection, a huge number of mainly British motor bikes East sussex • TN40 1SH inside the chateau, and over 100 military planes in the garden. Tel/Fax 01424 224440 The evening was, as one might predict; a little wine tasting in the Mobile 07831 351461 cellars of a private address inside the city walls of Beaune. A moment to appreciate the local production from one of the most prestigious regions of France. Dinner followed the same theme - private, informal and a chance to reflect on the day.

Sunday saw the rally move south, in the direction of the famous National 6, and its filling station, ‘Bel Air’ (a preserved 1950s filling station in the place where there were huge traffic jams in the pre- motorway era) and the Chateau de Rochepot. Even a brief walk through a small forest to a place called The Bout du Monde (The End of the World) was part of the plan.

The sun arrived at last, the Jensen convertible put its top down, and we all had a wonderful Sunday lunch before heading back to our respective homes. The whole rally passed without any problems concerning our Jensens. We will not mention here the small carburettor tweak that was required on the Facel. The locals, of course, stood back in admiration to see our wonderful cars go past even though this region sees many rallies throughout the year.

We must thank the people who helped organise the rally, especially Fred Mary and all his family in Beaune, Claude a local ‘Lotus man’ and now great friend, to Herve and Tanguy our journalists, and of course to the participants that made it all possible. From this success we are sure that in organising our next meeting on the other side of France, in the West, we can count on an ever-growing participation. Driving a Jensen is special in the UK, and in France you can often believe that it is almost unique too!

The JOC at Hampton Court

walk out of my house to a crisp bright sunny morning with no rain in sight and I think “Jensen driving weather today Gaz” I a text I regularly received this summer while at work with no chance of driving my car... but not today. Instead today I’m taking my wife and daughter to Hampton Court for the Club Trophy Competition which somehow I managed to get invited to. (Ed’s note: Gary’s car won 3rd place in the Concours and Best Interceptor at this year’s International).

It’s an early start for us, which doesn’t go down too well with the girls, Zagato, which I had never seen before - not surprisingly as apparently but eventually we are all in the car with the boot full of clothes, food, only 9 were ever built. Looking around at the other cars, the yellow and drink. After a few miles of driving the familiar questions start. I hastily joined in but 10 mins later thought that’s enough for me, I looked back at the Bentley gleaming in the sunshine with the chauffeur still polishing away, and thought he must be getting well paid for the effort he’s putting in...

So that was that, here we were in the Club Trophy Competition in the middle of these two fantastic cars, one costing £800k new a few years ago and the other one worth about £350k and my Jensen well let’s just say worth quite a bit less. Kevan didn’t seem to fair much better he was in between 2 beautiful Maseratis; there really were some top class cars here today.

32 The day consisted of wandering around the grounds looking at the cars Gary with wifh wife, daughter and Jensen and talking to their owners, who were all very friendly and welcoming. The winning car (a Rolls Royce) was owned by a lovely family. The car itself, though, seemed almost out of place compared to the other cars in the Competition. It was a very grand car which had been restored a number of years ago, not really my type of car, but I could really appreciate the time and effort in bringing it up to its current standard. This car certainly appealed to the ladies at the event; perhaps that also helped it to win.

With regard to the judging, it was a bit of a non-event, I’m still not really sure how the format worked. I was approached by one Judge and his partner who went right over the car checking the boot, looking under the bonnet and sitting inside. I half joked I may be a bit out classed here and was told “don’t be so sure, your car is holding its own today” but after throwing me that crumb of encouragement they were suddenly gone and no other judges were seen for the rest of We were a bit disappointed that we didn’t get to meet Prince Michael the day. of Kent but we enjoyed seeing the prize giving to the Rolls Royce which was a much-deserved winner. The Palace was beautiful and the I must admit I was pleasantly surprised at the number of people that grounds, with mature trees and gardens, sculpted over many, many stopped and spoke to us about the Jensen, especially considering the years were very impressive, add to this a mix of some fascinating quality of the other cars around it. Some of these people were very people and cars, the lovely bright sunny day and you had the perfect well-respected car collectors. Hitched in a Healey

Dear Paul

When my membership of the JOC was announced in the club magazine (Issue 245 Jan-Feb 2016), the cover photo was of a wedding with further photos inside. Therefore I thought you might be interested in seeing some photos of my daughter’s wedding featuring my Jensen Healey.

As we had to travel about 15 miles to the venue at Delbury Hall in Shropshire, we decided not to take the risk of having the hood down – given the dodgy weather outlook and the potential stress involved in putting it up/down on the way! In any event, with the ceremony being held outside, we could not risk the groom seeing his bride before they were hitched.

So we took some shots outside our house with the hood down before setting off and I was very pleased with the appearance of the car. My daughter, Alison, was delighted we could use it for I am pleased to say the weather held out all day and it only rained the wedding and her friends were very impressed. On arrival the at night when it did not matter. official photographer took some nice shots too. Best wishes The car stayed on display and some of the guests, especially the younger ones, appreciated the chance to sit inside. David Battisby

Dear Darren ...

Dear Darren

Thank you very much for your welcome. I have had contact with Dave and Jane (Turnage, the 541 Registrars – Editor) during the past year or so. I even met them at a Dutch event. I think they know all about the ‘309’, the register is up to date.

The car has registration number UEA170, an early 541R that was a Works car. It was a prototype using the Rolls Royce automatic in combination with the DS7 (engine). The car was used to study the interest for an automatic version of the 541R in the US. After it came back from its tour, it was sold to Basil Cheston from Hallam Sleigh & Cheston. This was a factor of Jensen by then. The Cheston and Jensen families were good friends. Alan lived near the Chestons in Wooton Wawen (Warwicks). Also was associated and went to work with Hallam Sleigh & as well. I’m also a member of the JOC Forum. It’s really nice to Cheston affter he left Jensen. exchange all this information.

38 Dear Darren Sam with 10 MOK Here are some details of my Jensen 1974 Interceptor.

My father was one of the first dealers of Jensen’s……in London. He then moved down to Kent and set up a garage there in West Malling. The car I now have was bought new from him by a Dr Moc, who resided in Mayfair. The number plate that is still on the car to this day is 10 MOK. The Dr would always say to Clive Scott, my father’s chief mechanic “usual conditions apply Clive”. This meant he would only drive it down to Kent on a dry day and the car had to be taken inside immediately and never left out.

Dad bought the car back from the Dr in May 1979. It had only done approx 10k mileage and never been taken out in the rain.

This summer was her first outing. My cousin Lord Pembroke has Sam Pelly’s Interceptor originally owned by Dr Moc a number of classic and vintage car meetings. I decided to take it there with my daughter Lella. It felt wonderful. The noise, the roar, the smell of the interior, the old leather so reminded me of the few and rare occasions that my brother and I rode out with my father. It was brilliant to now be driving it and have one of my kids loving it too!

Aside from being a pro-photographer for the last 15 years or so, I have set up a vintage motorcycle adventure company. We take folk off into the Wilds and remote spots of the planet on beautiful vintage and retro motorcycles. I have always been inspired by the intrepid simplicity of pioneering adventures. Dad clocked up some 4k miles over the years, again only ever on dry days. He squirrelled the old car away, and never really enjoyed it - or perhaps just the owning of it was enough for him. My father passed away in November 2016. I got the keys to the car and took it on a trailer back to Kent, from the old barn in Wiltshire where it had been stored.

It was a very emotive journey. Clive was very touched to see it again. Everything about the car was absolutely original, we even found the original first ever service sheet in the glove box. Clive had a tear in his eye as he saw his handwriting etched into the old document, produced by his own hand back in 1974...... Clive had the car all last winter, kindly offering to do the little work it My car, daughter Lella, and needed to get it back up and running. Gaga the gorilla at Wilton House

of 500cc Enfield Bullets, dropping back from the overpowered, over-specced, heavy ‘adventure sport bike’, to a more honest, more accessible machine. Much of our trips feel timeless and heroic; the retro-look of the Enfield all adds to this.

I love the simplicity of an older machine. You own the machine, unlike modern cars and bikes, where they are so complicated and computerised….and have to go back to the manufacturer whenever something goes wrong.

Get me in Dad’s old car and suddenly I am liberated from all that!

39 Dear Darren

I bought the red Jensen Interceptor Mk III (1973), chassis number 136-9112 (chopped to a convertible) (original Registration Number TPX 704M) last year from the son of Mr. Gulbrandsen. He told me, the car was rebuilt into a convertible by ex mechanics from Jensen. But he wasn´t able to verify it. (This is one thing I’m very interested in - who rebuilt the car and when?).

Okay, many enthusiasts are thinking: ‘this car is a mess, you can´t buy it’. But I´m thinking otherwise: I would never buy a Jensen convertible, because the lines of the car, the hood, don´t please me at all. Secondly, I buy cars, driving them for long periods. I’ve had my Morgan for about 30 years, so reselling isn´t my thing.

the exhaust was bubbling beautifull and all intentions for a critical inspection passed away. I´ve seen the little bubbles on the bonnet. They needed instant attention. Bubbles at the rear wing, at the doors etc. What to do? So we took a test ride...

The car was riding splendidly, the handling, the engine, brakes, carpets, seats, the sun... perfect!

I´ve bought the car. The seller asked me, would i like a glass of beer or champagne? We stopped the car in front of a store and had a beer. We did all the paperwork. After having a beer i wanted to start the engine, but nothing was working, what a bummer! The seller told me that sometimes his father had this problem, but dont worry, after half an hour, the engine would start again.

However. i was in touch with the seller a few weeks later, corresponding, sending pictures, sending details of history. in the pictures the car was great….like every car. The seller promised, that the car had only one little bubble on the bonnet, without needing attention. All would be perfect. The JOC had given them a certificate for the car at a meeting in England, being in a very good condition two years ago. I asked the seller, why he wanted to sell the car. He told me, the car had belonged to his father, who passed away one year ago. He owned a Mk II himself. So I decided to buy the car; travelling alone to Norway and driving the car back to Germany, was the plan.

After landing in Oslo, the seller picked me up and we drove to the garage at once. The sun was shining, the engine started,

We waited about half an hour, and the engine started without a problem. So he drove my Jensen back to the garage, waiting for notification that the bank transfer had been successful.

Next day he brought the car to the harbour in the toll zone. After all the paperwork was completed, the Jensen didn´t start again. Waiting for half an hour, it started at once. The seller said ‘Bye’, and i was driving into the harbour zone, waiting for the ferry. After two hours the doors of the ferry were opening and i tried starting the engine... but nothing at all, oh dear! What car have I bought? The ferry employees were very kind and helpful. With a boost starter the engine started at once! Why? i decided to buy a new battery in Germany from near the harbour...

40 The sea was very rough, sleeping wasn´t possible, but next day i had to drive about 1000 km/620 miles. And next day the engine only started with the help of the booststarter, what else? After buying the new battery i´ve started the engine... but nothing! What a bummer - and it was raining heavily. The Seller couldn´t understand it. I´ve asked for a boost starter. The engine started at once. Why? I bought the boost starter...

You know, the fuel consumption of the car is about 20ltr/100 km (Editor – about 14.2 mpg). So i planned some petrol stops (1/2 hour additional) to get the car to Munich... At the gas station, how about restarting? A wonder: The car was starting without problems. 1000km without any trouble. Finally i arrived in Planegg in the evening after a 12 hour trip. Great car!

Next day, I picked up my wife for a test ride to the castle of And the problems with starting? There were some technical Nymphenburg. She was impressed about the car, how easy problems, too small wires, overheating problems with the starter, to drive, parking backwards, no problem, but restarting... sh-t ignition lock... or so the mechanic told me. And after having spent happens... some money for the work? The engine won‘t start after running. The car has got a new name ‘Double B’ – the Beauty and the What to do with the car? First, the German MOT and the special Beast! What to do? I´ve bought a new starter relay and a solenoid. inspection for historical plates. Okay, the headlamps were missing But the winter started and i decided to get Double B in to perfect an approved number, the MOT man didn´t like the coil overs, the condition, but that is another story. edelbrock performer intake and carbs and some other things. So the car didnt pass the MOT. Back into the garage, changed some Kind regards, parts and convinced the MOT tester that the carbs are nearly the same as the originals: I got the Plates. Many thanks for the prompt warm welcome! The car details are: Jensen Healey MKII chassis no. 13802 Reg No.: UJD 571M Purchased: 8/8/17; last taxed/on the road: 1992

Appears to be 90% complete. Colour: Red (although it has also been blue under a generous coat of filler).

My dad had a red Mk II Healey from circa 1976 to ‘78 (UUU 906M possibly), until I was born, and at which point his beloved car was sold in favour of a decidedly less-exciting brown Mini with more seats and no Lotus involvement! Jensen Interceptor S - CUF 493L

I was stood on the shores of Lake Windermere. Our family went there every year for our summer holidays and stayed on a caravan site called White Cross Bay in between Windermere and Ambleside. I believe the site is still there. Though I loved sailing and canoeing I often stood at the lake shore listening to the sounds of the engine of the ultimate ski boat (called a MasterCraft ski boat). It made a magical deep gurgling sound as it returned its water skiers back from their morning ski runs on Nick and his son Thomas the mirror like lake... the day they purchased the car from JIA at Banbury One such morning I heard that wonderful sound but saw no boat, and turned round shocked to see a car slowly coming toward me – as it turned away and revealed its lines, then rear window Bentley Bournville Brown, with red Bridge of Weir leather interior. view and twin tail pipes, my jaw dropped; I’d never seen such The chassis number is 128/8016. a beautiful looking car – and it sounded SO SO good. 42 I am thrilled with the feeling I get as I step in to it, smell the leather The red Bridge of Weir leather interior and fire up the engine. My philosophy is to drive her as much as possible.

A little bit of fame was achieved when Jeremy Clarkson drove this very car on Top Gear - the video can be seen on the following link http://www.topgear.com/uk/videos/1243081889001.

We recently made a tour of the Scottish Highlands. What a magnificent 3-day driving tour – happy to provide the routes taken to any readers interested – as many B roads as possible!

Having just joined the JOC I am looking forward to learning more about the marque and meeting many more enthusiasts.

Castle Coombe Historic Race Day, 7th October 2017

This is the second year that we have organised a stand at this race day. The first year in 2016 we had on display virtually every model that Jensen did from the 541 onwards. But it poured with rain.

This year due to a clash of dates with two other events happening in the South West, numbers were a little down but the enthusiasm from those that attended was good. Lindsey and I couldn’t be there, and so we put the stand in the hands of our children and things seemed to go quite well despite the circuit making changes on the day to our location and stand size.

I would like to thank the following for turning up and enjoying a day racing: Mr Bristow senior – 541; Daniel Bristol – 541 (later relocated to the ‘Star Cars’ stand in the paddock); Robert Williams – CV8; 20% discount for Jensen Owners Club members.* Edward Brown – Interceptor Mk1; Philip Fish – Interceptor Mk 2; Nicholas Howgego – Interceptor Mk 3; Jonathon Miles – Interceptor Multi-vehicle and limited mileage policies available. With what was one of the middle-sized stands this year, the focus for awards by the circuit fell to those with a larger attendance and with all drivers and passengers dressed in period clothes – a bit like Goodwood, so maybe next year!

Introducing the new JOC Area Rep for Australia

s a long term Jensen owner, and having the fantastic Aexperience of being part of the JOC family while I was on work secondment here since May 2015, I am both delighted and honoured to be appointed the inaugural JOC Australian area representative - duties which I will take up on my return to Australia soon. Darren Barnes tells me there are 33 JOC members in Australia so not a large cohort, but hopefully one that will grow.

My interest in cars stems from childhood, and in 1970, while living in the UK for six months during my father’s academic sabbatical from South Africa, I went to the Motor Show at Earls Court. For a 13 year old fascinated by cars it was like my Christmases had all come at once - and two cars really stood out - the all new Range Rover, and the On the North Devon run with Eddie’s car Jensen Interceptor - both cars I knew I had to own one day.

It took until 1995 to buy a 1985 Range Rover Classic, and to 2000 The JOC is a fantastic club, and I have been made very welcome. when I bought my 1970 Jensen Interceptor Mark II - happy days! I Highlights were the Turin Trip 2016 and Saxony 2017 - and the many immediately joined the Jensen Car Club of Australia which in many local weekends away to the Lake District, Devon/Cornwall, Margate ways is similar to the JOC, but on smaller scale. Each state hosts the and of course the Internationals. All excellent events with members National Rally in rotation - and some National Rallies take two days enjoying their magnificent cars. driving to get there - and they are only one state away... As an aside I went on John Pym’s North Devon weekend recently, and But I always hankered after a C-V8, and while I was working in Malaysia I spent the Saturday run enjoying being chauffeured by Eddie Harrigan in 2013 a restored C-V8 became available off-market in Australia in his 1970 Interceptor Mark II which was the 1970 Earls Court Show to ‘selected applicants’ sadly due to the terminal illness of the owner. car - what a twist of fate that 47 years after his car sparked my interest A few phone calls and a bank transfer later I became the owner of in Jensens I was being driven around in the same car! a C-V8 Mark III which I had not seen for over half a decade - a true ‘sight unseen’ purchase. It is currently dry stored near Canberra and I am really looking forward to getting it recommissioned and registered. Tony C ope
