  • Nature Writing in Romania During the Post-War and Post-Communist Period
Emanuel Modoc Faculty of Letters, Babeș-Bolyai University Cluj-Napoca, Romania [email protected] NATURE WRITING IN ROMANIA DURING THE POST-WAR AND POST-COMMUNIST PERIOD Recommended Citation: Modoc, Emanuel. “Nature Writing in Romania During the Post-War and Post- Communist Period”. Metacritic Journal for Comparative Studies and Theory 3.2 (2017): https://doi.org/10.24193/mjcst.2017.4.04 Abstract: My proposal aims to investigate the changes in the Romanian literary discourse on nature and the effects of industrialization following the 1989 revolution in comparison to the ideological discourse of the post-war era. If Romanian post-war literary discourse is firmly tied to the underlying ideology of Communism, then any attempt to investigate the discourse on nature in this period must be made alongside a reading of the Communist discourse on nature. In this respect, the situation of Romanian post-1989 prose that contains aspects of the influence of Communist industrialization on nature provides an interesting case study on the effects of the post-industrial era on literature itself. Thus, my proposal will focus on a number of novels written after 1989 in an ecocritical mode of reading. Keywords: ecocriticism, nature, ideology, Romanian post-war literature, 1989 Revolution Seeing as Romanian post-war literary discourse is invariably subordinated to the Communist ideology, analysing nature writing, or any discourse on nature of this period for that matter, from an ecocritical perspective could be seen as both a productive and a fruitless endeavour. As paradoxical as it may seem, to talk about nature in Romanian Communism, and then to talk about the Communist discourse on nature implies a careful, exhaustive, and therefore productive analysis of its ideology.

  • New Images of the Nation in Postcommunist Romanian Literature
ANDREEA MIRONESCU THE INTERRUPTED COMMUNITY: NEW IMAGES OF THE NATION IN POSTCOMMUNIST ROMANIAN LITERATURE What Can One See through a Hole in a Flag The 1989 Romanian Revolution brought to the forefront one of the most powerful and suggestive images of the interrupted community: the hole in the flag. Cutting out the national emblem of the former Socialist Republic of Romania could have been a purely contextual and defiant action during the insurrection against Ceausescu’s oppressive regime, but it had immediate and large echoes. Andrei Codrescu, a reputed Romanian-American writer who travelled back to Romania in December 1989 to relate the revolution as a radio commentator for ABC’s Nightline, was one of the first to speculate upon this image in his homonymous book published in 1991: “suddenly there, under the cold moon, there it was, the Romanian flag with the socialist emblem cut right out of the middle. […] It’s through that hole, I thought, that I am returning to my birthplace”1. Codrescu connects the hole in the flag not only with a maternal tunnel through which he returns in his homeland, but also to the motif of the empty space which featured recurrently in Romanian theories of national culture ever since the interwar period, as Bogdan Ştefănescu suggests2. However, a more transparent connection to the interrupted community, as Jean-Luc Nancy defines it in his celebrated book The Inoperative Community, is to be found in Slavoj Žižek’s interpretation of the hole in the flag. For the Slovenian philosopher, the Romanian hollowed flag is a “sublime image” of a suspended and open historical situation: “the rebels waving the national flag with the red star, the Communist symbol, cut out, so that instead of the symbol standing for the organizing principle of the national life, there was nothing but a hole in its centre”3.

  • Rearticulating Socialist Subjectivities
Rearticulating Socialist Subjectivities Class and Gender in Romanian Fiction during Communism by Alexandru Demirel Emil Boican Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy School of Slavonic and East European Studies University College London 2016 I, Alexandru Demirel Emil Boican confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis proposes a socio-cultural analysis of the articulation of socialist subjectivities in Romanian fiction during the communist period. The question underpinning my research, therefore, concerns the way in which the literary articulation of subjectivity changed across two historical divides: from the inter-war period to Socialist Realism and from Socialist Realism to the literature of the troubling decade. This thesis will be argued over four chapters, two of which will examine the works of Mihail Sadoveanu while a further two will dissect the works of Augustin Buzura. Through the close reading of the works of Sadoveanu and Buzura, whose careers span the two aforementioned historical divides, this thesis will trace the complex rearticulating of class and gender subjectivities as they evolved throughout the communist period, as well as the importance of the communist regime’s social legacies as regards the understanding of post 1989 social developments in Romania. Central to the communist regime’s project of social transformation was the creation of an egalitarian society by default of the abolition of capitalist classes and gender inequalities. While the regime claimed that the material basis of these inequalities had been eliminated and social emancipation was well advanced, critics considered that the official egalitarian discourse had erased social and individual differences and engendered the so-called “faceless masses”.

Abstract This thesis focuses on novels, essays, films, and popular culture miscellanea representative of Central and Eastern Europe, in the attempt to explain how nostalgia developed in this area since the fall of the Iron Curtain. Post-socialist Central and Eastern Europe has undergone a major - and, for many, unsettling - historical shift, thus, perhaps not surprisingly, nostalgia for the former communist regime does not lack in popularity. Due to the region’s turbulent past cum present, millions of Eastern Europeans have migrated westward; homesickness is only one of the feelings they share.

Ioana PAVEL Faculty of Letters, Babeș-Bolyai University Cluj-Napoca, Romania [email protected] LITERATURE AND MIGRATION: THE RE-PRESENTATIONS OF ITALY IN CONTEMPORARY ROMANIAN PROSE Recommended Citation: Pavel, Ioana. “Literature and Migration: The Re- presentations of Italy in Contemporary Romanian Prose”. Metacritic Journal for Comparative Studies and Theory 6.1 (2020): https://doi.org/10.24193/mjcst.2020.9.10 Abstract: Thematised through the mechanism of fictionalization, migration is one of the common fields in which the social impact upon literature is visible on multiple levels. Discussions in which migration occupies a central place cover different areas of literary interest. Such areas are the status and the thematic preferences of the migrant writer, the “migration” (i.e. the circuit) of the book in the international space, and to the thematic reflection upon cultural, identity related, or psychological consequences of the phenomenon. The present study emphasises migration as a literary theme and insists on the reverberations that take place at the level of the narrative discourse (psychological print, narrative devices, real space vs. constructed space, subjective stamps on the re-presentation of the literary space etc.), starting from two case studies: The Little Girl Who Played at Being God by Dan Lungu, respectively Kinderland by Liliana Corobca. Besides the obvious sociological component, the novels share the interest in the psychological effects that the migration phenomenon has over the children. Their particular “voice” represents, in fact, a narrative device that both authors use in order to create an effect of authenticity. Keywords: migration, psychological and sociological perspective, narrative device, Dan Lungu, Liliana Corobca.

  • Accepted for Publication in Südosteuropa
Accepted for publication in Südosteuropa. Zeitschrift für Politik und Gesellschaft (Special issue, “Living After the Fall”), Fall 2016. Between Trauma and Nostalgia: The Intellectual Ethos and Generational Dynamics of Memory in Postsocialist Romania In Romania, as elsewhere in Eastern Europe, the collapse of communism triggered a testimonial drive that was understandably dominated by victims of communist oppression and concerns with justice and retribution. Coming in the wake of decades of state dominated public discourse, the flood of testimonies documenting state repression aimed to counter the official “falsification” of communist history, revealing the violence of the Stalinist decades. Memories of early postwar violence thus converged with fresh recollections of the economic deprivations and indignities of the 1980s to strengthen the authority of personal experience, particularly the experience of suffering and victimization, in bearing witness to the recent past. The testimonial drive fed into an emerging public discourse which, in its most forceful articulation by intellectuals and politicians, cast the communist past as a traumatic national experience. By comparison, the past decade witnessed a gradual shift from early concerns with political repression, justice, and retribution to revivals of the social, cultural, and everyday experiences of late socialism. If the scope of social memory has widened to include everyday life, so has the chorus of public voices, which features artists, movie directors, or bloggers alongside a cohort of aspiring writers, who spent their childhood and youth in Ceaușescu’s Romania (1965-1989) and came of age after the collapse of the regime. Not unlike the public intellectuals of the 1990s, this young generation draws on the authority of personal experience to join the public debate with collectively authored memoirs of childhood, youth, and family under socialism.

  • Ambiguous Transitions Gender, the State, and Everyday Life in Romania from Socialism to Postsocialism C
INTRODUCTION Ambiguous Transitions Gender, the State, and Everyday Life in Romania from Socialism to Postsocialism c How was our life then? The fact is, we found jobs, we were promoted, and we got raises … it didn’t seem difficult to me. During the communist pe- riod they guaranteed us a job, well-paid or not so well-paid, each person was important in their own way. We led a very industrious life. I came home from work, I washed, I ironed, I made food … and after all that I embroidered and knit. I led a very active life. Now I feel awful because it’s very difficult to pass from a period full of activity to a period where time is dead. Now I’m looking for work so that I won’t go crazy.1 —Maria, unemployed electrician (b. 1955) For someone raised in an era of alarmist rhetoric about the “evil empire” and made-for-TV movies depicting the aftereffects of nuclear war, ex- cerpts such as the one quoted above seem highly unlikely, if not wholly implausible. While growing up in the United States, my visions of life “over there” were of crumbling apartment blocks, factories spewing pollutants, and empty store shelves and bread lines. Glimmers of hope did appear in the form of TV broadcasts of Lech Wałe˛sa and protesting workers, but being nine years old when Solidarity formed I was too young to appreciate the movement’s significance—or the irony of its very existence. And, even if I had, such images reinforced rather than challenged existing perceptions of life east of the Brandenburg Gate as repressive.
