Résumé en français …………………………………………………………………...........................136 6 Evoluţia şi direcţiile prozei româneşti după 1990 Rezumat În discutarea peisajului literar românesc de după 1990, am făcut apel la un concept propus de istoricul francez François Hartog, anume „regimul de istoricitate” („le régime d’historicité”) – un concept istoric, dar şi cultural, care mi se pare util şi adecvat pentru modul în care proza românească postdecembristă se raportează la temporalitate, la istorie şi memorie. Căci după 1990, fie că vor sau nu, scriitorii – tineri şi mai puţin tineri – pornesc la drum cu o „moştenire” – căderea comunismului, revoluţia din decembrie 1989 – şi cu toate manifestările unei vechi traume (comunismul), iar acestea vor trebui „acomodate” în prezentul – foarte amestecat – social şi politic al primilor ani postcomunişti (dar şi mai târziu), ca fundal al romanelor şi prozei scurte după ’90. Revoluţia din 1989 reprezintă, pentru noi, în termenii lui Hartog, o „breşă”, o „falie” în regimul de istoricitate, care conduce la o reconfigurare a raporturilor trecut-prezent-viitor (ultimul într-o mai mică măsură), ca temporalităţi ale romanului şi prozei scurte după 1990. Modul în care proza actuală se raportează la tradiţia culturală şi la trecutul istoric reprezintă un element definitoriu pentru înţelegerea ei. Se poate vorbi, grosso modo, de două categorii de proză aflate la antipozi: pe de o parte, proza care funcţionează pe dimensiunea „prezentismului”, cu termenul istoricului François Hartog , ignorând sau ocultând dimensiunea trecutului (în speţă a comunismului): proza minimalist-cotidianistă, iar pe de alta, proza aşa-zicând arheologică (cu termenul lui Michel Foucault), de recuperare explicită, chiar demonstrativă, a trecutului comunist. În proza românească actuală, relaţia trecut-prezent este însă una mobilă, există adesea un balans între cele două dimensiuni temporale, care determină, implicit, o reflecţie – prin intermediul textului literar – asupra evoluţiei culturale mai generale a societăţii româneşti postcomuniste. Metacritic Journal for Comparative Studies and Theory 3.2 (2017): https://doi.org/10.24193/mjcst.2017.4.04 Abstract: My proposal aims to investigate the changes in the Romanian literary discourse on nature and the effects of industrialization following the 1989 revolution in comparison to the ideological discourse of the post-war era. If Romanian post-war literary discourse is firmly tied to the underlying ideology of Communism, then any attempt to investigate the discourse on nature in this period must be made alongside a reading of the Communist discourse on nature. In this respect, the situation of Romanian post-1989 prose that contains aspects of the influence of Communist industrialization on nature provides an interesting case study on the effects of the post-industrial era on literature itself. Thus, my proposal will focus on a number of novels written after 1989 in an ecocritical mode of reading. Keywords: ecocriticism, nature, ideology, Romanian post-war literature, 1989 Revolution Seeing as Romanian post-war literary discourse is invariably subordinated to the Communist ideology, analysing nature writing, or any discourse on nature of this period for that matter, from an ecocritical perspective could be seen as both a productive and a fruitless endeavour. As paradoxical as it may seem, to talk about nature in Romanian Communism, and then to talk about the Communist discourse on nature implies a careful, exhaustive, and therefore productive analysis of its ideology.

The Rhetoric of Subversion: Strategies of ‘Aesopian Language’ in Romanian Literary Criticism under Late Communism ANDREI TERIAN Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, Romania This paper analyses the subversive strategies of ‘Aesopian language’ with reference to the discourse of the Romanian literary criticism written under late communism (1971-1989). The first two sections of the paper signal certain gaps and inconstancies in defining Aesopian language and in delineating its forms of manifestation; at the same time, they explain the spread of this subversive practice in the political and cultural context of Romanian communism. The following three sections analyse the manner in which Aesopian language materialized in the writings of some of the most important contemporary Romanian critics: Mircea Iorgulescu, Nicolae Manolescu and Mircea Martin. The final section of the study considers a revision of the current definitions of Aesopian language (through the concept of “triggers” theorized in this paper), a new classification of the rhetorical strategies acting globally in a subversive text, as well as a re-evaluation of the relevance of Aesopian language in the context of ‘resistance through culture’, which was the main form of opposition against the communist regime in Romania. INTRODUCTION In the Foreword to his famous pamphlet Imperialism: the Highest Stage of Capitalism (1917), V.I. Lenin cautioned his readers that the paper had been written ‘with an eye to the tsarist censorship’; therefore, he had found it essential to render his subversive doctrine ‘with extreme caution, by hints, in an allegorical language – in that accursed Aesopian language – to which tsarism compelled all revolutionaries to have recourse whenever they took up the pen to write a “legal” work’.

    Contemporary Romanian Writers MINISTRY OF CULTURE A Mature Literature A few years ago, in Romanian literature there was a clear split – in terms of themes, imagery, and devices – between writing that was firmly grounded in the critical canons, on the one hand, and texts by young writers more in tune with new trends and more receptive to outside influences, on the other. Those who had only recently entered the literary arena had the air of being a group, and this came not only from their shared imagery, disinhibition and rebelliousness, but also from their redefinition of literature and the literary. In time this split has become blurred. Whether young or old, whether esteemed by traditional-minded literary critics or beloved by the online media and literary blogs that nowadays set the publishing trends, active writers, i.e. those who publish a book at least every two to three years, have become more professional. Today's osmosis, the crystallisation of a unitary literature, is undoubtedly a sign of maturity, of the fact that the post-1989 literary transition has been left behind, and (why not?) of intellectual generosity on the part of those literary generations that have already become established. The memoir-dialogue between Paul Cornea and Daniel Cristea-Enache excerpted in this catalogue is a clear illustration of this idea. Therefore, it is pointless to discuss the literature being written in Romania today in terms of different generations. However, the genres currently being tackled might paint a livelier, more dynamic portrait of Romanian letters. The novel, still regarded as the dominant genre and the one with the greatest public impact, wagers on authenticity, parody and irony, and the results could not be more diverse.

    ANDREEA MIRONESCU THE INTERRUPTED COMMUNITY: NEW IMAGES OF THE NATION IN POSTCOMMUNIST ROMANIAN LITERATURE What Can One See through a Hole in a Flag The 1989 Romanian Revolution brought to the forefront one of the most powerful and suggestive images of the interrupted community: the hole in the flag. Cutting out the national emblem of the former Socialist Republic of Romania could have been a purely contextual and defiant action during the insurrection against Ceausescu’s oppressive regime, but it had immediate and large echoes. Andrei Codrescu, a reputed Romanian-American writer who travelled back to Romania in December 1989 to relate the revolution as a radio commentator for ABC’s Nightline, was one of the first to speculate upon this image in his homonymous book published in 1991: “suddenly there, under the cold moon, there it was, the Romanian flag with the socialist emblem cut right out of the middle. […] It’s through that hole, I thought, that I am returning to my birthplace”1. Codrescu connects the hole in the flag not only with a maternal tunnel through which he returns in his homeland, but also to the motif of the empty space which featured recurrently in Romanian theories of national culture ever since the interwar period, as Bogdan Ştefănescu suggests2. However, a more transparent connection to the interrupted community, as Jean-Luc Nancy defines it in his celebrated book The Inoperative Community, is to be found in Slavoj Žižek’s interpretation of the hole in the flag. For the Slovenian philosopher, the Romanian hollowed flag is a “sublime image” of a suspended and open historical situation: “the rebels waving the national flag with the red star, the Communist symbol, cut out, so that instead of the symbol standing for the organizing principle of the national life, there was nothing but a hole in its centre”3.

    critică, ESEU 29 Iulian L UDIC şi IRONIE BOLDEA ÎN PROZA OPTZECISTĂ Critica literară ce s-a aplecat asupra fenomenului pro- zei româneşti contemporane a putut constata existen- ţa a două trăsături dominante: proza autoreferenţială, nonfictivă, cu care a debutat în forţă ultimul deceniu al secolului trecut, şi reabilitarea ficţiunii, ce a urmat, ca reacţie firească la invazia de literatură documentară, depoziţională, autobiografică. Acestea sunt, în fapt, cele două direcţii majore ce structurează evoluţia prozei româneşti contemporane; proza de ficţiune este con- curată de proza autobiografică, de proza nonfictivă, de documentul literar, mai mult sau mai puţin stilizat, sau de proza autoficţională, în care, pe baza unor referiri la circumstanţe sau persoane reale, se creează o ficţiona- lizare a acestei realităţi. Ficţionalizarea are, aşadar, ca punct de plecare realitatea, pe care o recreează, o remo- delează, conferindu-i dimensiuni, sensuri, semnificaţii inedite. Cert este că jurnalele, memoriile şi alte tipuri de texte autobiografice ale unor scriitori din perioada interbelică, dar şi textele cu caracter depoziţional, ce evocă suferinţele şi precaritatea fiinţei umane în perioa- da comunistă, se întretaie, în aceşti ultimi optsprezece ani, cu textele ficţionale. Ba chiar, cum s-a şi remarcat, scrierile cu caracter depoziţional au reprezentat un sti- mulent pentru scriitorii de azi, care şi-au regăsit dis- ponibilităţi noi prin asumarea pactului autobiografic la nivelul propriei scriituri (Nicolae Breban, Dumitru Ţepeneag, Mircea Zaciu etc.).     Bulletin of the Transilvania University of Braşov Series IV: Philology and Cultural Studies • Vol. 8 (57) No. 1 – 2015 Guerrilla male libidos in Mircea Nedelciu’s fiction: from Gender to Genre in Eastern European context Ramona HĂRŞAN1 Writing under Ceauşescu’s communist regime, Romanian author Mircea Nedelciu seems to fictionally exploit the politically subversive potential of the male libido as emphasized by the imagery of the Western sexual revolution, through a gallery of male protagonists recurrently exhibiting unconventionally libertine and misogynistic erotic behaviours. However, his underlying ethical commentary regarding the issue actually generates a theoretical standpoint that might not only be significant for a regional (re)interpretation of “sexistentialism” as a (counter-)cultural topos in the Eastern European literature of the 1980s, but an interesting contribution to the nowadays renewed debates concerning the cultural achievements of the Sixties’ sexual liberation as well. Key-words: hippie masculinity, sexual revolution, mysoginism, homophobia, Eastern European communism. 1. Foreword: the Sexual Revolution and Masculinity as Gender Issue A particular and rather controversial aspect of the present-day debates regarding gender is the critical perspective on the cultural achievements of the Sixties’ sexual revolution and the limits of its underlying Reichian ideology. Describing this entire “revolutionary” topos as an implicitly phallocentric and mainly heteroerotic discourse on sexuality, as well as in the terms of a consumerist erotic politics of aggression and surveillance, French theorists Pascal Bruckner and Alain Finkielkraut already introduce in 1977 the concept of “genitalism” – a term primarily describing the reduction and confinement of the eroticised male and female body to an alienating, seemingly equalitarian symbolic imagery of the phallus and its simple, obvious functioning – in order to set forth their main objections to the libertarian pretentions of the phenomenon (Bruckner, Finkielkraut, 2005).

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis proposes a socio-cultural analysis of the articulation of socialist subjectivities in Romanian fiction during the communist period. The question underpinning my research, therefore, concerns the way in which the literary articulation of subjectivity changed across two historical divides: from the inter-war period to Socialist Realism and from Socialist Realism to the literature of the troubling decade. This thesis will be argued over four chapters, two of which will examine the works of Mihail Sadoveanu while a further two will dissect the works of Augustin Buzura. Through the close reading of the works of Sadoveanu and Buzura, whose careers span the two aforementioned historical divides, this thesis will trace the complex rearticulating of class and gender subjectivities as they evolved throughout the communist period, as well as the importance of the communist regime’s social legacies as regards the understanding of post 1989 social developments in Romania. Central to the communist regime’s project of social transformation was the creation of an egalitarian society by default of the abolition of capitalist classes and gender inequalities. While the regime claimed that the material basis of these inequalities had been eliminated and social emancipation was well advanced, critics considered that the official egalitarian discourse had erased social and individual differences and engendered the so-called “faceless masses”.

Due to the region’s turbulent past cum present, millions of Eastern Europeans have migrated westward; homesickness is only one of the feelings they share.
