Explored are the way official narratives were constructed by the communist regime, how and why this narrative was deconstructed, and by more ethno-specific narratives prevailed that fueled the nationalist tendencies of the war. This paper is organized chronologically, beginning with the historical background that puts the rest of the paper into context. The paper also discusses the nationalist resurfacing before the war by examining the Croatian Spring, nationalist re-writings of history, and other matters that influenced the war. The majority of the paper analyzes the way WWII was remembered and dismembered during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s by looking at rhetoric, publications, commemorations, and the role of the Catholic and Serbian Orthodox Churches. Operation Storm, which was the climax of the Homeland War and which expelled 200,000 Serbs serves as an end-point.

  • Arhai's Balkan Folktronica: Serbian Ethno Music Reimagined for British
Ivana Medić Arhai’s Balkan Folktronica... DOI: 10.2298/MUZ1416105M UDK: 78.031.4 78.071.1:929 Бацковић Ј. Arhai’s Balkan Folktronica: Serbian Ethno Music Reimagined for British Market* Ivana Medić1 Institute of Musicology SASA (Belgrade) Abstract This article focuses on Serbian composer Jovana Backović and her band/project Arhai, founded in Belgrade in 1998. The central argument is that Arhai made a transition from being regarded a part of the Serbian ethno music scene (which flourished during the 1990s and 2000s) to becoming a part of the global world music scene, after Jovana Backović moved from her native Serbia to the United Kingdom to pursue an international career. This move did not imply a fundamental change of her musical style, but a change of cultural context and market conditions that, in turn, affected her cultural identity. Keywords Arhai, Jovana Backović, world music, ethno, Balkan Folktronica Although Serbian composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Jovana Backović is only 34 years old, the band Arhai can already be considered her lifetime project. The Greek word ‘Arhai’ meaning ‘beginning’ or ‘ancient’ it is aptly chosen to summarise Backović’s artistic mission: rethinking tradition in contemporary context. Нer interest in traditional music was sparked by her father, himself a professional musician and performer of both traditional and popular folk music (Medić 2013). Backović founded Arhai in Belgrade in 1998, while still a pupil at music school Slavenski, and continued to perform with the band while receiving instruction in classical composition and orchestration at the Belgrade Faculty of Music. In its first, Belgrade ‘incarnation’, Arhai was a ten-piece band that developed a fusion of traditional music from the Balkans with am bient sounds and jazz-influenced improvisation, using both acoustic and electric instruments and a quartet of fe male vocalists.

  • Rastko Jakovljević Dead Public Spaces – Live Private Corners
Rastko Jakovljević Dead Public Spaces – Live Private Corners... Rastko Jakovljević DEAD PUBLIC SPACES – LIVE PRIVATE CORNERS: (RE)CONTEXTUALIZATION OF MUSICALLY PUBLIC AND PRIVATE∗ Abstract: The expressions of private and public musical life and experience are mostly discussed separately. This article joins these two concepts into one scope and surveys the identity of both. In ideal (utopian?) traditional context, between private and public music experience (life), the context shows ideal vitality and consistence, while in an ‘irregular’ context these two concepts be- gin to distance themselves, opening space for marginality or so called ‘errors’. This article studies bagpipe tradition in Serbia, at different stages of its de- velopment and in different periods, specifically focusing on rural and urban contexts in diverse sociopolitical conditions. Although bagpipe tradition still exists in Serbia it is far removed from what it once was, and the idea is to represent the contexts of that process, private and public, sociopolitical, and marginal aspects, from the 19th century (or hypothetically before then) until today. Keywords: private, public, marginal, bagpipes, identity, traditional, urban, rural. Privately speaking It is hard to balance personal private life with public life, and it is even harder to grasp hold of ideals when one is aware that they do not quite correspond to what is socially expected of us. It seems that the ‘work’ of a peaceful country life and corresponding moral codes are blurred, so that today only the notion of these still exists and is advo- cated. Many have lost their individuality in this transition, in the sense of the influence that they once had in society.

  • Balkan Beats Under the Doppel Bock Multi-Instrumentalist Slobodan
Balkan beats under the Doppel Bock Multi-instrumentalist Slobodan Trkulja was brilliant with WDR Funkhaus orchestra and his band Balkanopolis at Zollverein It is known that the Balkans begin just south of Vienna. In contrast, it was a surprisingly persistent evening in Essen under the Doppel Bock headframe of Zollverein because the multi-instrumentalist Slobodan Trkulja was there with the WDR Funkhaus Orchestra and his band “Balkanopolis." The star in his native Serbia, he is apparently largely unknown in this country - and (for whatever reason) not detected by the Balkan community of the Ruhr. Here, the musician is a fascinating innovator of ancient sound traditions eastern of Adriatic. One could only marvel at how confidently the 37-year-old played the material and Ottoman-influenced folk songs with rock grooves and sophisticated string beds which led to amazingly homogeneous synthesis. Trkulja first paid homage to the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók with a selection of his "Dances of Transylvania” by casting an indicative light on their own standard. The whole big attraction is his form and since the conductor Arjan Tien safely guided WDR Funkhaus orchestra it fit well into the concept of rock-symphonic opulence. For the fiddly Balkan beats cared drummer Arie Den Boer, cool-assisted by Dejan Antovic on low pitched five-strings and Leonid Pilipovic at the Tarpan, a double-sided drum. “Garnished” was the dazzling sound of Milos Jakovljevic on the Bulgarian kaval , while Dragutin Jakovljevic (Git.) and keyboardist Marko Milatovic were responsible for predominantly rock accents. But the focus was clearly on the star of the evening, who casually presented his haunting melodies either on the clarinet or on the bagpipes.

  • Exploring Balkanology in South African Popular Culture
‘Hopa!’: Exploring Balkanology in South African Popular culture By Zinaida Mhlongo A research report submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Music. Johannesburg, July 2013 i Declaration I declare that this study is my own original work. Where use is made of the work of others it is indicated and acknowledged by means of complete references. It is submitted for the degree of Master of Music at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. It has not been submitted before for any other degree or examination in any other university. ___________________________ Johannesburg, 22 March 2013 ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I never quite imagined my Balkanology project would be as rewarding as it was. As a musician and an individual, it has brought me home, to the Balkans, through music and beautiful memories. I have to thank a few people for this: the Wits Music Department for their encouragement, and Dr Grant Olwage and Dr Susan Harrop-Allin for their amazing research course. Susan, I simply could not have written my thesis without your guidance; Prof. Malcolm Nay, for believing in me; Eugenie Chopin, for working hard on my singing voice and for your incredible patience and knowledge. iii ABSTRACT This thesis is a study of a popular music culture in South Africa called Balkanology. The research examines Balkanology as a club culture, explores its constituent elements, documents and then interprets Balkanology as a musical scene in South Africa. I examine Balkanology, its complexities and its social relevance, practices and processes.
