Ovid's exilic poems, far from simply manifesting his situation and personal feelings, were part of a literary tradition that grew over time. Ovid was aware of the previous conventions of writings from exile, and molded those concepts into a genre of exile poetry, with set tropes and guidelines to be followed by later exiles. The well-known philosopher and politician L. Annaeus Seneca was exiled on the island of Corsica by the emperor Claudius from 41 to 48 CE. -

Eine Grabinschriftenformel in den Epigrammbüchern Martials Der genialisch-verschrobene österreichische Kulturhistoriker Egon Friedell (1878‒1938) fällt in seiner bis heute viel gelesenen Kulturgeschichte Griechenlands ein harsches Urteil über die lateinische Sprache und Literatur: Bis zum heutigen Tage können alle Völker der Erde, wenn sie etwas mit der letzten Konzision, Präzision und Prägnanz sagen wollen (auch diese drei Wörter sind unübersetzbar), es nur latei- nisch sagen. Für alles andere als Dünnschliff, Schärfe und Schwergewicht eignet sich das Latei- nische gar nicht: Es ist eine Sprache für Devisen und Donnerworte, Invektiven und Paragraphen, Kommandos und Grabinschriften.1 Diese sehr zeitbehaftete, von antirömischem Philhellenismus geprägte Verdammung, die den Latinisten von heute provozieren muss, kann grundsätzlich auf zweifache Weise widerlegt werden. Entweder man weist nach, dass sich Latein für sehr viel mehr eignet beziehungsweise geeignet hat als hier von Friedell behauptet, oder man zeigt auf, dass es im zugestandenen, halb schriftlichen, halb mündlichen Verwendungsbereich weit mehr gibt beziehungsweise gegeben hat als nur „Dünnschliff, Schärfe und Schwergewicht“. Der folgende Beitrag möchte den zweiten Weg einschlagen und sich dabei ganz auf die zuletzt genannten Grabinschriften konzentrieren, ja er zieht den Fokus sogar noch enger, indem er gewissermaßen mikroskopisch untersucht, wie Roms bedeu- tendster Epigrammatiker Martial (ca. 40‒104 n. Chr.) eine einzige Inschriftenformel, sit tibi terra levis („die Erde möge dir leicht sein“), in seiner Dichtung verwertet hat. Wenn es unter den erschwerten Bedingungen des Versatzstücks gelingt, Friedells Ver- dikt zu falsifizieren, dann darf mit einem argumentum a fortiori oder genauer: a minore ad maius getrost die ganze lateinische Sprache und Literatur als rehabilitiert gelten. -

While still young he composed his extant epic poem of four books on the story of the Argonauts. When this work failed to win acceptance he went to Rhodes where he not only did well as a rhetorician but also made a success of his epic in a revised form, for which the Rhodians gave him the 'freedom' of their city; hence his surname. On returning to Alexandria he recited his poem again, with applause. In 196 Ptolemy Epiphanes made him the librarian of the Museum (the University) at Alexandria. His Argonautica is one oi the better minor epics, remarkable for originality, powers of observation, sincere feeling, and de- piction of romantic love. His Jason and Medea are natural and interesting, and did much to inspire Virgil (in a very different setting) in the fourth book of the Aeneid. The proposed argumentation refers to the process by which semiosic theoretical principles were selected and refined into a model of discourse analysis. The propounded methodology is exemplified by the genre of epitaphs and provides the platform for examining interactions among code, informational and cultural components of semiotic entity. Key words: semiotics, semiosis, interpretant, discourse, semiosic approach, epitaph. The sign defines its spread and signifying extension in and through the interpretant toward which it looks for its essential clarification and for its ultimate grounding as a significant utterance within human discourse (Garth Gillan) 1. Introduction Semiotics today is quite a broad field with much variety in it. A lot of existing definitions of semiotics only complement one another, and commonly, the shortest version – the science of signs – is considered to be sufficient (Seif, 2019a; Seif, 2019b, p. 94). This laconism, on the one hand, speaks of the methodological clarity of semiotics, and on the other hand, the complexity of the object has transformed semiotics into the "science of sciences". -

Parnassus, Delphi, and the Thyiades McInerney, Jeremy Greek, Roman and Byzantine Studies; Fall 1997; 38, 3; ProQuest pg. 263 Parnassus, Delphi, and the Thyiades Jeremy McInerney AN INTERNATIONAL SANCTUARY, Delphi helped bring a bout the transition within the emerging poleis of the ~ Archaic period to what Fran~ois de Polignac has called a "more finished, <adult' stage of society and institutions. "1 Delphi's business was international in scope: the sanctuary was involved in colonization, arbitration, and panhellenism.2 Yet one important aspect of Delphi's emergence as a panhellenic sanc tuary rarely studied is the impact of this extraordinary status on the community of Delphi and its surrounding region. In this paper I propose that, as the sanctuary of Delphi came to repre sent order, conciliation, and mediation to the Greeks, the local topography of the region was made to reflect these same themes. Delphi and Mt Parnassus became, through myth and ritual, a landscape in which tensions between wildness and civilization-a polarity at the heart of the culture of the polis could be narrated, enacted, and organized. Delphi and Parnas sus stood for the polarities from which the polis was construc ted. On the one side was Delphi, representing the triumph of order over chaos, as expressed in the myth of the sanctuary's foundation, when Apollo destroys Pytho and brings culture to the original inhabitants of Parnassus (Strab. 9.3.12). Y’all know what you did. iii ABSTRACT Pudicitia: The Construction and Application of Female Morality in the Roman Republic and Early Empire A thesis presented to the Graduate Program in Ancient Greek and Roman Studies Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University Waltham, Massachusetts By Kathryn Joseph In the Roman Republic and early Empire, pudicitia, a woman’s sexual modesty, was an important part of the traditional concept of female morality. This thesis strives to explain how traditional Roman morals, derived from the foundational myths in Livy’s History of Rome, were applied to women and how women functioned within these moral constructs. The traditional constructs could be manipulated under the right circumstances and for the right reasons, allowing women to act outside of traditional gender roles. By examining literary examples of women who were able to step outside of traditional gender roles, it becomes possible to understand the difference between projected male ideas on ideal female morality, primarily pudicitia, and actuality. -

http://akroterion.journals.ac.za DRAGONOLOGY: THE IDEA OF THE DRAGON AMONG THE GREEKS AND THE ZULU M Kirby-Hirst (UNISA) The dragon is one of the most ubiquitous of images — from its appearance in the dreams of individuals to the legendary works of men like J R R Tolkien — it is known across the world but never viewed in the same way. This article takes a Jungian psychoanalytic approach to the dragon as symbol, and juxtaposes two distinct perspectives on the dragon, that of the ancient Greeks (the mythic dragons Typhon and Python in particular) and the Zulu people of South Africa (with special attention given to the place of the python as a possible “dragon” in the practice of divination), in an effort to better understand the creature’s significance to these two cultures and to the world at large. Then a second sign appeared in the sky: there was a huge red dragon with seven heads and ten horns, and each of the seven heads crowned with a coronet. Its tail swept a third of the stars from the sky and hurled them to the ground … (Rev. 12:3-4). In the western world the dragon most often occurs as the perfect expression of malefic and destructive capacity — the dragon of St. John’s vision or the feared Leviathan of Hebrew myth — while in the east dragons can be representative of good fortune. Yet wherever one is in the world, almost every society, past and present, often expresses some concept of the dragon: images of dagger-toothed reptilian beasts abound, with great bat-like wings, poisonous spines, sharp claws, and fiery breath the optional extras filled in by the individual imagination.
